Title: TACTICUS- The Most Tintillating Game
Post by: Sensei on November 22, 2009, 12:51:02 am
GOODE EVENING, GENTLEMEN.
That is most certainly the correct spelling of goode.

You may have heard before of a wonderful game called TACTICUS. And it is- a marvelous game played by the world's most famous scholars, rulers, historians, generals, and pioneers since the first ancient breaths of civilization.

But what is it? How can I play? Indeedably, these questions will come in time. But it is not so simple. There are many published rule books, some aging thousands of years old. Before you can truly play, you must understand the base rules (7.1), as penned by Urist Pantsheim in 1274 (although they had existed prior to some extent):

-The objective of TACTICUS was once, primarily, to defeat your enemy (or ally with them and defeat them later. However, as easily winning strategies have become more routine and established, the goal has shifted to defeating your enemy in the most indibutably humiliating and improbable way possible. Players may judge your feats of indubitability on a one-to-ten scale, although this has no official impact.

-TACTICUS is a miniatures game. Each miniature takes up one space, usually (Volume three of TACTICUS: Miniature Care argues the benefits and detractors of resizing miniatures with a hack saw as opposed to allowing for multiple-tile units).

-TACTICUS takes place on a board of equally sized tiles. Any gentleman worth his scotch plays on a real table with real miniatures- but if you are in a hurry, you can abbreviate the board on your computer. When we do so, we will play in a [C0DE] window, and use ASCII tiles similar to those in Slaves to Toeflaw II: Gnoll Establishment (http://bay12games.com/dwarves/) (See Introduction vi, Use of Electronic Computational Apparaticii in TACTICUS, c1990)

-Participating competitors will take their turns in order of Gentlemanly Conduct. You may enter and act at will -indeed, the general with the initiative takes the advantage- but try to give other players a chance to act... unless you have a rule source that states otherwise.

-Units in the game are all accompanied by their own rules, but most can survive being wounded to various degrees and have a number of squares in which they can move in a turn over certain types of terrain, and an attacking ability.

-All actions in TACTICUS must be cited to previously published rules. There are many, many many books, treatises, scrolls, scriptures, files, slates, vinyls and fossils dedicated to discussing the rules of TACTICUS- you probably have some lying around, and you don't even know it. Once a rule has been cited, it need not be explained in full each time it is used.

-TACTICUS is a historian's game of finding rules that suit your fighting style. No proper gentleman would DARE to make up rules by citing books that don't actually exist, or any other such unsporting conduct.

We may now begin, gentlemen. Here is the FIELD OF PLAY.
There is a field, a river, and a cliff. I place an Orc on the field, and give a set of clothing under my command, as stated in Pantsheim 7.1, Chapter six, subsection four, Base Unit Posessions.

By the ringing of the feather in my cap I was alerted as to the presence of a new game of Tacticus. I remember the old days well, back when the Ludum Daring ruleset was still in the 1.15c version and the accepted 'Rules of Clothing and Lack Therof' was not yet established. The memories bring my eyes to tears. Then we tried many a time to revive this most noble game, only to fall short of our glory. A dear shame seeing as every game now requires the sacrifice of some small cute animal or several ancient priceless relics. Still, for a good game(Which could last centuries as some of the oldest Tacticus texts show) it is worth the investment. I thank you for allowing me to start this off as the first non-host player.

A game of Tacticus? I believe it is time to bring out the brandy.

Taking advantage of the rules present in Chapter Eight, Section Six of TACTICUS: The Expanded Compendium of Busts, Sculptures and Effigies, which state that any sufficiently damaged statue may be animated and controlled by the first player to claim it, I order the orc statue to jump in the river and conceal itself.

Tacitus! Always wanted to try this.

Recently i located, purely by accident, a book known as TACITUS: AQUATIC ANIMALS AND SODDEN STRAYS According to Chapter Seventeen, titled "Intrusions Into Our Watery Abode" i may place 3 Carp into play in an appropriate location when a Player Controlled and Animated Statue is ordered to enter a suitable body of water.

Tacitus. How it haunts me. Who could ever imagine by its innocuous name that that such a trifle could ruin a man? That a kingdom could be won or lost by the vaugeries of its rules? Such a name, simple in its virtues yet beguiling all the same! It hath ruined me once, stipped me of my every honor, my love, my family and verily, even my own life! No more! This time, I play to win.

The ghost of Baron Grek von BreadSyrup accepts the challenge.

Tacticus was whispered into the ears of Urist Pantsheim by Nyarlathotep, to occupy the minds of gentlemen so they don't accomplish anything of merit.

Qwertyuiopas, dabbling tacticus painter, has arrived to chronicle this epic game in full-colour PNG glory.

(This time, I will write a program to do most of the hard work for me, rather than MSpainting it all)

(But first:

Expect me to make periodic images eventually.)

Ah, jolly goode! Another rousing game of TACTICUS! I remember my last game; a loss, but an enjoyable one. Zombie Jesus has always enjoyed the Xanatos Gambit, and I have yet to find a suitable counter--until TODAY!

As published in the classic collector's volume "TACTICUS And Its Impacts Upon Modern Society" by famed master of game himself, Richard the Lionhearted, I shall begin the multi-turn "Siege of a Thousand Needles". This turn, I may place 1 human unit of my choice on the map (I place a bowman in the north-eastern corner), and each following turn for five turns I may exponentially increase my forces until the fifth turn, where I must place the Human General and four bodyguards. Risky, but terrific fun!

Knowing that my statue will never survive leaving the water, I order it to dig a tunnel to escape. According to Pantsheim 7.1, Chapter 14, Beneath the Playing Field, such an action allows me to appear anywhere on the map in four turns, provided nothing interrupts my subterranean journey.

As detailed in Chapter 112 of The Complete Tacticus: Guidelines for Magical Interference, my Carp transform into Landwalker Carp in response to the Borgle's teleportation and charge a nearby wagon. According to Dikran Tahta's paper, Energy, Matter, Convection and Tiles, page 3, paragraph 12, it is asserted that the removal of cliff tiles creates a surplus of 'stones' which proceed to occupy the floor tile as an item(s). This good for my plans. My Orc proceeds to collect all of them.

Of course, Pantsheim's resplendently famous auxiliary text TACTICUSAL FORETHOUGHT dictates that I, having clearly formed a strategy which will take three or more turns to execute, must emit an evil laugh. Ahem.

Update on the existance of a map:
About ~50 tiles into mapping, I realized that the grass would be too hard to realistically redraw each time, so I wrote in saving and loading.

Colours must still be done through hex-editing or MSpaint post-processing, because, though saving and loading supports them, I don't have an editor feature for it.

Also, for anyone to actually use it in the future, it uses the mouse for almost everything. Edting is done through click and drag to "paint" a tile, and character selection is done through holding shift to show the font, and clicking the desired character. It reads from a bitmap, and should support any image, as well as potential future expansion for more than a 256 character set.

But for now, I shall create a monochrome version. Then bother with colours later.

I will replace the burning holes in reality and start adding colour, but that won't stop me hating every moment of it.

DEAR GOD THE GRASS IS ON FIRE!

I see you have invoked Rule 66 from Tacticus: Armageddon, Ragnarok and other Apocalypses.

Unfortunately Sensei, Chapter 9, Section 4, Paragraph 6 of Tactical Tombs, Part III states quite clearly that the defilement of a tomb by orc or orcine creatures will cause a neutral undead of appropriate nature to rise from an appropriate location.

In this case, the occupant of the sarcophagus arises as a Mummy and assaults your Orc!

I hate writing grass.

However, colouring it? It was almost as fun as if I had a custom floodfill that recognised all grass as the same!

Now, I need some help: Colours for anything white.

Here is the colour matrix, tuned to DF's (Thanks, DF wiki!), with about twice as many combinations, as I don't think certain colours could be used for backgrounds.

Edit: for those interested, here (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?jyz53yzktzh) is the program, source code and latest map included. The only missing feature is map resizing. Edit colours by holding control, otherwise edit characters. Hold shift to access the character/colour selection screen, depending if control is held. Load with L, save with S, everything else is mouse control: click and optionally drag to draw either the colour or the character.

It appears that in order to properly begin this game I must start the downward spiral of madness. Thus I bring in a third wagon. This evokes the Law of Groups and Hordes from the Pantsheim Ruleset Sixteenth edition chapter 43B page 4-52 article five. The rule states that once three of any creatures/objects/entities/similar things are within the playfield they are subject to universal rules that apply to groups and hordes. With a third wagon it is considered part of the wagon horde, and thus all actions made by wagons have multipliers based on how many wagons are in play.
I also have a kobold on this wagon, thus allowing me the various kobold rules when it comes to reproduction.

According the The Beginning Artist's Guide to Illustrating Tacticus, unless corrected by the players, I may choose to interpret aspects of the game for the purposes of art.

By this guideline, I am painting the carp with a diffrent symbol, animating the water, making a colour-assumption on the cave, blackening the unrevealed terrain, and saying that, if the players accept it, the upper corner of land is definately dirt.

As stated, though, undisputed clarifications from the players take presidence over my interpretation, to be corrected in later paintings.

Much improved. The stone walls might look better as gray too, unless someone wishes to invoke Rule 57 of section 31 from Tacitus: Mountains and Molehills which allows a player to define a section of rock as marble if it was not previously defined.
Title: Re: TACTICUS- The Most Tintillating Game
Post by: qwertyuiopas on November 23, 2009, 07:48:41 pm
All of the rock is undefined, I just tried to influence some of it to have colour. It is up to the players to develop if all of the rock is actually sand/dirt/clay or if it merges into rock in the visible areas, or even if my creative judgement was wrong, and there was no sand in the first place. Similarily, if an ore vein is defined, I could either obscure unrevealed portions of show it all, whatever the players ask for.

...which, however, is fine for my plans. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

As I have already expended my first summoning, I will have to roll my next creature. I'll start from the civilized races table, Pantsheim 7.1, p912.

*3/6* Three...
*7/10* Orcish...
*12/20* Paladins. That's not terribly plausible, is it? Nonetheless, I summon them, and give them armor and swords, as per the pre-designated class equipment, Zeeblebrok revision. I actually have already purchased some orcish paladin figurines from the local fleamarket, but I will represent them here as Ø.

The persistant swapSpace is finished.

All it is is an automatically loaded(at start-time) and saved(on exit) file called swap.tac, so if you wanted to resize it, just edit it as a regular file, though save it elsewhere or with a diffrent name until the program is closed, otherwise the autosave-swapSpace-on-exit will overwrite it.

In fact, you could theoretically do all your work in swapSpace, as long as you didn't mind losing the ability to draw only the colour or only the tile, and having to constantly hold control and Z to access it.

Of course, sorry for stealing some of this space for development of a program, but it should be practically finished, so I don't think I will need to update it again for a while.

Ah, if i recall correctly, A Stumble Bumbler's Guide to Fluffy Wambler use in TACITUS, chapter 11, section 8, states that a Bumble roll of 10 causes it to stop Bumbling and start Wambling instead, it also gains a bonus to Pudge equal to it's Stumble modifier while it continues to Wamble. Assuming that is a standard Fluffy Wambler that means that it's Pudge is now at +5 (as by default a Fluffy Wambler has +4 to Stumble). If so, those Orcs are in for a very rough time; a Wambling Fluffy Wambler with +5 to Pudge is a very dangerous foe.

Oh no! According to Carp: Combat and Tactics, the loss of their wagon leader sends them into a berserk rage, attacking the nearest animate thing, which happens to be... actually i think it's the colossus.

The Landwalker Carp charge the Colossus, i roll a 15, an 18 and a 5 for each attack, factoring the +1 bonus for charging, i do believe that according to Tacitus: General Purpose Combat Results, page 113, one Carp tripped over his own mutant flippers and ended up face down in the dirt, one scored a nice ringing hit on the Colossus that did no real damage, and one took it's arm clean off with a karate chop to the thigh.

GREETINGS! I have come from the oppisite side of the forums as I heard that there was a TACTICUS game going on.

Hmm, it appears the wagons are dealt with meaning I can't envoke the Dwarf Carpenter Spam rule. Well, I guess I have to summon something. I will be using the book Summoning stuff in TACTICUS: You CAN actualy do that. on page 392 para 5 lines 4-6 it states "You are allowed to roll the inqesitive dice, when rolled it will look around your area and pick something to summon. As it isn't Dwarf Fort related it will not be able to act for a turn as it has been ripped from it's dimension

[1d20] A unit of...
[1d?] ...Mechs from...
[1d6] ...Clan smok Jaguare...
[1d3] ...only two.

RIGHT

I summon two mechs, one a Puma and Owens on the left near the ridge

It would be nice to get some specifications on the wall's material type, as well as colours for the colourless.

According to the Wimbledon Hardshrove Compendium Revision XVI Pg 667, the worm tunneling through the rock that has remained immobile for more than three turns can be transmuted into white sand.

That is exactly what I do

There is no need for me to change the board.

Curse my delay in taking this turn! It appears I shall have to resort to my backup plan much earlier than I had anticipated. This could pose problems for me in the long run.

According to Chapter 23, Transmution of Creatures into Map Features of Creature Transformations in TACITUS, I, as the player who summoned the worm in the first place, may now summon any creature which might reasonably be found near the feature the original creature was transmuted into, namely white sand. This creature may be placed anywhere the original creature could have reached within five turns, provided the creature is capable of standing there. The same chapter states that since the original creature was giant, the new creature must also be giant. I therefore elect to summon a giant crab. According to Chapter 3, Movement of A Beginner's Guide to the Use of Tunelling Creatures in TACITUS, the only spaces i can place it are within the crypt. Since it cannot take any further action this turn, I elect to place it as near to the entrance of the crypt as possible:

████M:M████.,.,'...,',;~~~~.,.'.,;.,'..,,.
███████████,.,'..,;'..~~~~~,'.,'',..,;.'.,

Since I have made no changes to the board containing the wagons, I shall refrain from reposting it.

To qwertyuiopas: I request that my giant crab, along with any units I may subsequently place on the map, be rendered in red, for the simple reason that it is my favourite colour.

I had hoped to do my turn sooner, but I knew that other players had to do what they did in order to fulfill the requirements of this plan. Namely, that they remove five or more wagons from the field. As these wagons were made under the Kobolds, natures little kleptomaniacs extended ruleset I may choose to cause them to reproduce. I had planned to merely let them reproduce on one side of the field, but seeing as wagons are both removed from the field and not killed I can have every breeding pair produce a wagon offpring.
 Aren't the wagon pups cute?

Ah! This is most tintillating! My friend in liverpool has just aeromailed me his book, Curio Tactico Dimensionalis, by Pope Urban I, and my good servant Frumpus has had a most difficult time translating it. But I've at this point discerned, that every hammerspace exists only as an appendage of the real world, and must have a link. If there is not one, it will form summarily. I have a special clockwork mechanism for discerning this, it's based primarily on the phase of the moon relative to Jupiter...

Ah, today it is an interdimensional Trenchcoat, the prodigiously deep pockets of which act as a powerful portal capable of allowing through an object of any size. It exists on both planes, and may only be worn and used by the bearer of a mustache with a shininess of 3 or higher and a curvlitude greater than 1, though anyone can carry it.

Ah, and my Orcish Paladins move befriend the Wambler, as they will need it to defeat the mechs. I summon a Cheesecake (Culinary Creatures in TACTICUS, 1981 print, chapter 7 "The Only Thing Orcs Can Cook Ever") for them to offer him. I roll an (18/20-2) 16 on cheesecake making. The actual diplomacy roll will have to take place on the Wambler's turn, however.

As Paladins have the [GOOD] tag on them, they are allies of the Fluffy Wambler. Outside of mating season and stampedes, the orcs have nothing to fear. Now, for the diplomacy roll:
[1d20]->[11+0] = 11
As you can see, the 11 is well under the 16 of the Cheesecake roll. The Wambler will follow the orcs for 5 turns, at which point it must be fed the cheesecake or else it will Stampede.

The current Pudge Rating, as noted by Neruz, is 10+5 Pudge, bringing it up to Large size. It is also Wambling. Normally I would make a set of Wamble rolls, but it is following the orcs now. Thus, I only need roll for speed:

[1d6]->[2+0] = 2

Now then, this is interesting...

I have here a copy of Interdimensions in TACTICUS: Non-scientist edition as the first edition was a lot of mumbo jumbo they had to redo it and dumb it down.

*sips sherry*

On page 90 subsection H para 2 there is a rule 'It sucks to do nothing on a turn, so do something'. This stats "When a player can't move any of there models for whatever reason..." My mechs as they're wondering how they were fighting Inner Sphere mechs one moment then here the next "...May take any model on another field of play to the origanal field that has not moved for a long time and swap it with one of his own."

Therefor take one of the kobold caravan and replace it with an engineer

Also, someone put a few characters too many to the left of the lower river section.

And too few to the right.

And too few to the right.

I shall fix this momentarily.

Seeing as I now have the advantage, my giant crab attacks the adjacent mummy with its pincers. I roll a d20 and get a 17. According to Chapter 16, Combatting the Undead of Crustacean Combat in TACITUS, this means I have severed an arm.

The Mummies respond poorly to your Crab's heinous assault and attack in kind; the first rolls a 11, with a -2 modifier for the lack of arm, which my table from Undeath and Combat: How It Goes says means that the assault is blocked by your crab's thick shell, my second Mummy rolls a natural 20, which, i believe, means that there are now 3 mummies. The Crab mummy will be referenced with a Ç, to show it's rather unique status.

If it's still dead, of even if it's not, when I get some free time, I'll try to revive it with another bit of art.

Once more, I request some colours for the uncoloured.

And do you know how easy it is for me to resize this? It's very easy, so don't be afraid to add more vertical space.

As stated in Chapter 37.6, Environmental Features and their Tactical Advantage (Revised Version), after more than twenty turns have been acted out in any game with a river, that river will start to flood whenever more than three amphibian creatures are present on the map and the flood roll (rolled at the beginning of every turn) is less than the floods capacity, that river will expand.

Rolling a d20 yields me with... 6, which is high enough to beat the river's capacity score of 13.

Just noticed I had missed the ² in the last image, but...

YAY, KILL THAT GRASS(because the grass changes as edits are made, so by killing it all, I can resynchronize my copy with the current set)!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Edit: oops, didn't look at river expansion enough. Corrected two tiles.
