Title: ooooh
Post by: PNB on August 30, 2006, 11:22:00 pm
Mistem Nilsil, farmer, has become enraged.

I did not know dwarves could do that. Luckily he wasn't going berserk at me, considering a lizardman just popped up and jumped at his face. So does becoming enraged improve martial prowess?

I wonder how it differs from martial trances.

trance = calm
enraged = RAWWWR KEEEEL

I read that the trances are from being outnumbered.

I think they need to get hurt to become enraged... almost sure!

Edit: Also from what I've seen whenever anything got enraged it was just a fancy show before that person/thing died.  :(
I'm sure it's not always the case.

Ya know.. I have no idea about this lightish gray everyone mentions...

For me I've always seen:

White > Bright Yellow > Dark Yellow > Red > Dark Gray

With the last one obviously making me sad.  :(

its the dark gray... well I know why that lizard man is lying there, my legendary miner, tore off his left arm up to the shoulder with his bare hands, then cheerfully went off to dig another stretch of farms.

There is a light gray, I have seen it several times, mostly from sparring in the barracks.

It indicates the bruised damage level.

AFAIK (I think the wiki supports me here)
White (Uninjured) -> Light Gray (Bruised) -> Brown=Dark Yellow (Injured) -> Yellow (Broken) -> Red (Mangled) -> Dark Gray (Gone)
I've never seen anyone recover from a Brown injury, but I think they can eventually heal those, I'm pretty sure broekn is currently permenant. And bruised actually heals pretty quickly.

OMG, broken body parts cannot heal? How come?  I had 2 dwarves so far who refused to work with a broken arm, and they were lying in their bed only. I had to restart the game, so I dont know that their broken arms would have been healed or not....

Broken limbs and extremities are supposed to heal, but currently people get so many unhappy thoughts from having broken limbs that they spend hardly any time in the "Rest" task, as most of their time is spent in the tantrum state instead.  If the spine is broken, however, the dwarf will never heal that injury.

Completely missing limbs will never heal, either, and at present this means a death sentence because your dwarves will always feel "phantom pains" -- missing limbs will not heal over, so your dwarf will go around everywhere with a ragged stump for the rest of his or her life (which is thankfully not that long).

Another nice thing to remember is that none-barracks none-bedroom beds are used for housing the injured, a key place for getting rid of the pests (a locked door is good enough for me, but I guess most would rather flood him)

Well flooding is bad, especially if one of the highest skilled dwarf broke his arm for example. This happened to my high skilled carpenter btw. However I never had any idea that why is he lying in a bed, and doing nothing. When I spotted him, I had no idea whats going on. [Im still new  :)] .. So I checked his wounds and his arm was broken, but he was already dehydratated.
I had no well, so a dwarf tried to give him water, but on his way to the river he was attacked by some monsters, and he dropped the bucket and ran away. My carpenter died.
Fantastic game btw, so many different things to take care of.

Btw any plans to add healer dwarves or something like that in the future?

I sure hope apothecaries are added at one time or another.  Dwarves either heal nearly instantly or they almost never heal, depending on your luck.  It would at least be nice if an injury didn't cause so many post-traumatic stress disorders.

"Kilos in the trees, man!  Kilos in the trees!  Kobolds everywhere!  I gotta get OUT OF HERE!  JOHNNYYYYYYYY!!!"

How is that working out for you? I would imagine that having one tantruming dragon could pretty well end your entire fortress.

pretty well, they are all doing work, one is mining out the first 6 spaces of the mountain face, for resources before we burrow in. the beds are in max production... food is a bit of a bitch due to the fact that brunt foxes and such, don't make a good meal.

Breaks heal.  They heal especially well with the newer patches.  I had a dwarf with a broken arm fully heal when he didn't even have his own room.

Now, if they're unconcious, that tends to fuck them up right good.  Also: spinal injuries tend to not heal.

Are injuries supposed to prevent sleep?  One unlucky dwarf (the lucky ones died on the spot) tried to go hunting outside my haunted fortress and got a mangled leg and broken arm.  The arm healed quickly enough, but he just laid in bed for months without sleeping, eventually becoming exhausted and going insane.  It it because he's supposed to be in great pain, or is this a bug?

At least the guy had the decency not to throw any tantrums.

I've found that broken bodyparts almost always heal if you keep the dwarf happy. Just give him a nice enough room (some statues are good for this) and try to have dwarves availible for bringing food and water. Never had a mangled bodypart heal though, and gone ones are just that, gone. Doesn't seem to hinder the dwarfs that much though.

Unconsciousness is death knell for an injured dwarf.  If a dwarf is rendered unconscious (typically due to "Pain"), the unconsciousness does not count as rest and the dwarf will not heal.

My guess is that the system that handles rest and recuperation requires a flat amount of time spent resting before the dwarf recovers a category of injury.  If the rest is interrupted, all previously accrued time is discarded and the dwarf must start over.  If the dwarf is busy throwing tantrums or toggling between consciousness states, the dwarf will not heal and will inevitably go berserk, go insane, become dessicated, or starve to death.

I don't know, I've had dwarves in continuous unconsciousness-wake-unconsciousness mode that healed before. Usually in the end they fail to heal completely but some of their wounds will end up going away, eventually.

We need medicine, opiates and stuff that can be used to force a dwarf into healing sleep.  Of course, then they could get addicted or something.

Well, since this thread I fooled around a bit on adventure mode, and I got to see the "Light Gray" wound, yay!

I did mix the yellow up with the brown/darkyellow.

Although the light gray didn't come from bruises.. first one was from a "cut" & the second time a flying arrow pierced my guy's left hand = light gray. I think I saw Dark Yellow/Brown pop up when I, or the enemies would get Badly Bruised.

Now in fortress mode, I agree healing = much better.
In the older version I had a dwarf with broken bone(s) he crawled out of his bed in a berserk rage looking for someone to kill.
Recently a dwarf recovered... after like a year+ of waiting though.

Well anyway, I recently was under seige by goblins & two of my dwarves have been mangled. I'm watching them closely!

The Swordsdwarf with a mangled head is actually resting well with his pet cow.
The Axedwarf with the mangled upper body & right lung on the other hand won't stop throwing fits.

I'm hoping my swordsdwarf pulls through!

Anyone seen someone in red recover?

Now personally, I have an injured person who has been resting in the barracks.  It is however a different bed that is defining the barracks.  This is actually pretty nice since the barracks is right next to the kitchen and is also near a well (though I guess that doesn't matter if they run to a river to get water instead)
