Title: Community Writing Project: Motivate Yourself!
Post by: JoshuaFH on January 18, 2010, 10:42:16 pm
So I was somewhat inspired by Aqizzar's Adventures in Procrastination thread to make this.

Basically, the title could be replaced with "Get off your ass and write something" with no loss in meaning. For those seriously lacking the motivation to devote their imaginations to written word.

What I'm thinking:

People come here, and we take turns writing stuff. I don't think it needs to be very strict in the turn-order, but I'm considering to honor any requests to bother those that are persistent procrastinators until something is written. Seriously, lack of motivation is a terrible thing, and I think it would be more easily overcome if there's some form of peer pressure to motivate people to get things done.

I don't think anything huge is necessary, even just a paragraph or two each time, just so long as work is getting done!

I'll get to work right now on something.

EDIT: I really liked reading this article:

Seriously? This is just going to encourage me to procrastinate. Might as well make a "Let's Play" thread :P

You guys are no doubt going to procrastinate until someone starts first. So, here's a random contribution to get the ball rolling:
Urist leaned on his pick and wiped the sweat from his brow. The tough obsidian stared at him defiantly. He heard whip cracks and shouting from far behind him, but he was out of sight for now. Exhausted, he decided that it was a good time to take a break. He leaned against the wall, staring behind him, pick in hand, just in case his master came back.

Mining was hard work. He did not have the muscles for it. No, he was the bastard child of an elven champion and a dwarven concubine, with none of the qualities of either. He never knew either of his parents. He never knew friends, just a life in a cage.

As he heard footsteps approaching, he wiped a few tears with his shoulder and lifted his pick to continue work.

I'm signing up. I'll post my contribution shortly (I'll just copy paste it from my thread. Yes it's not work per se, but it reminds me what I'm writing about.)

As he heard footsteps approaching, he wiped a few tears with his shoulder and lifted his pick to continue work.

His dyed jet black hair fell back over one of his eyes, as he liked to wear it. It hid him from the world, and made sure they knew that they'd never understand his pain. The footsteps stopped behind him.

"Hello, father." Dammit. It was this little disappointment. Yes, mining was a tough job, but it was a dwarven job at least.

"What do you want?" He didn't turn around to look at the disgrace. He swung his pick in an exaggerated sweeping motion.

"I got my first job. It's with Ithiri'r'riaira'ra'irir'iari the Elf, a bunny herder with the trading caravan. I'm leaving with them to perform in the elf circus entertaining the trees on cloudy days."

He grunted and swung again, his rage seeping into his arms, giving them strength he didn't know he had. The pick struck the obsidian, and he heaved back for another swing. Something stopped him though, abruptly.

"Aren't you happy for me, father?" What? The incessant brat was still talking.

"Shut up, tree hugger." He stared at the gouge mark the pick had made... it was glowing, red.

Though, to be clear, I didn't mean for it to be a big story where each person contributes. More like where each person can start their own story, and then they'll be bothered to continue it as opposed to letting it die.

Urist squinted to see the red glow. He had trouble focusing due to his sweat making his mascara run. It's okay though, this was only one more sting to add to the immeasurable blackness of his pain. His little shit of a son was going to join the elves then, good riddance. The heat in the tunnel grew to the point where Urist felt uncomfortable. "Why, why must my life be so unbearable?", Urist complained. "I'll show them, they'll be sorry when I slit my wrists  again tonight!" Just then, the crack in the wall widened and the pressurized magma became visible through the tiny fissure. "Oh shit" said Urist, and those were the last words he ever spoke.

That's the most emo dwarf ever. I'm glad you killed him.

I've added a little bit more to the story in my second post. It really helps that I'm not feeling as depressed today.

I'm currently away from my good computer and all of my stuff, so apologies for not contributing yet. But I will. Give me two weeks, then you can nag as much as you want.

I'd like to mention that Willfor gave me a link to a rather helpful series of columns written by an experienced author, and I think it would be beneficial to repost it here:

By the way Josh, I do intend to take up your challenge and post something here.  Tomorrow.  Hopefullydefinitely.  Just need to decide what the crap I'm writing among two or three or more options, so I can focus for once.

My name was mentioned, so I figure I should participate. This is currently an idea competeing to knock the novel I'm writing from its position. I would appreciate being knocked into activity to continue fleshing it out.

I'm glad my thread is attracting attention. If any of these little stories are finished, I'll place them in the OP for all to see.

Also, I've been doing good with writing a bit every day. If you look again at my story on my second post, I've progressed to what I hope will be a good fight scene. I just need to think about it a little bit more.

It's like 5 AM anyhow, I need to go to sleep.

I added a few more paragraphs.

Though, I just want to let everyone know that if you want me to, I'll send PM's to people pestering them to continue whatever story they start. I think that may help with the motivation part.

Too bad, I didn't finish it (The rest is being read by the girly); also just because you won't read it if I spoiler it:

"It came to me like many of my best ideas, in a dream. I was dreaming late at night as a child; It was then that I decided I wanted to be a ninja.

At school, no one humored me. The other boys wanted to shoot at each other with imaginary guns. The girls wanted to blink innocently at me while dressing me up in skirts. The teachers were just plain terrified of me.

Guns were not a true measure of skill, I declared. A true measure of awesome is being able to sneak up on somebody and stab them in the face without them realizing they've been stabbed in the face. The boys listened to me awhile and then pointed their index fingers at me. "Bang. You're a dead ninja!"

I reminded them that guns were "easy mode for 'tards".

So they started punching me.

The next day the girls sauntered up to the boys, blinking innocently. The boys were mesmerized by the girls' presence on their side of the playground. The two groups lined up, facing one another; the girls inched closer and closer. Demurely the girl's eyes traveled down to the boys' pants. The boys were frozen, confused. Still smiling immaculately, the girls deftly reached into the boys' pants and gave them such wedgies that the cotton underpants were stretching up to their chins.

Apparently ninjas were to blame for the great Mary E. Bragg Atomic Wedgie Massacre of '93. None of them were ever found or punished. None of the boys wanted to admit to losing to girls, so none of them got in trouble either.

I always had a great sense of justice and honor. To my first grade self, honor meant I won because I was always right. Justice told me that I was right, because I always won. They still believe this in many parts of the world."
