Title: Things that should affect issues
Post by: Ruttiger on March 09, 2010, 11:50:17 am
I was thinking that there are a few things that should effect various issues.  For instance, if you shoot a conservative in front of anyone other than conservatives, the gun control issue should move towards conservative.  If instead, you are shot without having taken a violent action first, or shot at in front of liberal or moderate witnesses, the gun control issue should head toward liberal.  Any time moderates or liberals witness you attack a conservative before an alarm is set off should cause an LCS popularity hit.

There should be many situations like this.  Offending a moderate should result in a free speech issue hit.  It should be possible to offend even liberals, with the same issue hit.  It should also be possible to successfully woo conservatives, for a free speech issue bonus, though it should be inanely difficult (I've never had a persuasion of more than 10 or 12, so it might actually be possible and I just don't know).  Of course, offending a conservative shouldn't effect free speech.

Sadly I disagree with most of this. The gun control changes suggested would make combat very complicated to avoid gun control popularity lowering, almost similar to the political violence tolerance system that was loathed by many. And the free speech system changes would be very very VERY unrealistic. Seriously, you'd have to offend hundreds of people to have even a 1% effect on free speech. I wouldn't like to see a situation where someone doesn't want to listen to you and then all of suddely - bam, half the country opposes free speech. Not realistic, not fun.

A little offtopic but I felt this was appropriate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmLHOGT0v4c

edit: on topic, I suggested something similar to this and this was Foxies reply:

While realistic, that injection of realism breaks the fundamental assumption behind LCS -- that somehow what the LCS does leads logically to society becoming more Liberal. It breaks the crime squad aspect by forcing the LCS to play nice toward the end. Since the violence, theft, special editions, and so on are probably the most fun aspects of the game, I don't want to do anything to punish them.

And he brings up a good point, the violence is both on topic and probably one of the most fun parts of the game, so penalizing the player for having fun seems counter-productive.

Plus it would limit a lot of current strategies, forcing players to go non-violent to actually win.

I like violence but I'd find it even more fun if there were more different stealth actions... bomb strikes, stealth assassinations, blackmail anyone?

Yeah, I can see that. I've built up a disguise/stealth guy but even manipulating juries and breaking safes just doesn't generate juice like going in a chopping up a room full of people...

I think gun control should lean towards liberal when guns bought legally(from pawn'n'gun) are being used. It would lean toward conservative(or just stay unchanged) if you are getting you weapons illegally from gang members and such. It is an argument of conservatives that outlaws will always find a way to acquire guns illegally, even if we ban the selling of firearms. If registered and purchased guns are being used for mass shootings it should make the public opinion want more gun restrictions, however if the shootings are being carried out by heavily armed terrorists then citizens won't connect it with gun control.

Balance-wise it would make gun control laws harder to liberalize the less gun you can get from shops(the more liberal the law is in the first place) once again making the difficulty scale as the game goes on.

I've won the game with a single pure stealth guy - no sleepers, no other active members. Stealth actions are powerful, since I can't imagine winning with a solo AK47 or swordsman, but I think there could be more variety.
