Title: Oh the wonders of life
Post by: Nilocy on May 10, 2010, 05:49:08 pm
In my infinite wisdom I took a quick (5 hour) break from my studying to reflect on the awesomes of humans and their lifes.

Being a scientist really puts life into perspective. Over the last year studying my subject (biology) I've come across things that have blown my mind, several times on one occasion, and I end up sitting there in awe at how stupidly, amazingly, stupendously complicated and amazing the human form is. I have trouble comprehending it all, theres just so much!

From the chemistry that makes the elements you eat. To the DNA that tells every single cell what to do! From them the proteins and enzymes you grow. To the tissues they create. To the nerve impulses you generate from tip to toe. To the chemicals that keep you in check, dopamine yum yum.  To the synapses, electrical pulses and those fantastical neurons.

That is all.

Yeah, pretty appropriate.

One line I liked was "We are a way for the cosmos to recognise itself."

Yeah if you took that completely out of context you could draw some hippie conclusions. The others there are decent, with an exception. One was pretty lame, I forget which though.

Sometimes I'll just think about how the cells in my body are arranged in blood vessels that carry blood around and that system alone is so crazy-complicated, it's amazing we live as long as we do. Especially what with all the extreme sports we put ourselves through.

It's always nice to sit back and appreciate the beauty of the human form.

I like to examine the complexities that arise even in the most simple forms of matter (only in pics in journals, my highschool doesn't have an electron microscope :( ) that make up everything. Like quarks.

If I cannot even read something like that without inferring a hidden Your Mom joke, what have I become?!

Particularily if it's the human form of Scarlett Johannson

I'm ashamed to admit this but the things in this world that I think are the worst are spiders. Scare the living daylights out of me.
That, and anything along the lines of violent, infectious diseases (mutated rabies in L4D).

What's so wonderous about life? Just becuase it's complicated does not mean it's magic.

Aw, but spiders are so cute up close!

Also, I have yet to see anyone here describe it as magical. No YECs here yet. However, complexity has an allure all on its own.

I dont understand. If it's not magic there is no wonder to it. It's just physics. Like 1+1=2 except it's more complicated.

That's a personal opinion. Just because something is explainable or conforms to scientific law as we know it doesn't mean it's not wondrous. I, personally, find the complexity of even the most basic of life to be wondrous.

But again, the idea of what wondrous means varies from person to person so it doesn't bare arguing about.

Bah, I suspect you don't think equations can have beauty either.
Besides, with science we can do most of what used to be considered magic. As far as I'm concerned, the difference is semantic.

I understand it to the extent that science understands it. I don't just find the parts I don't get to be wondrous. For example, the heart - that's a pretty amazing piece of equipment. Atoms - astonishing.

On a totally different tangent the rising of the sun in the morning - wondrous for me and I know damn well why it happens.

Just because we don't know everything doesn't mean that the things we do know hold no amazement for us.

EDIT:

Exactly. I don't see why you're claiming that the only things that are wondrous are the ones we don't understand when it's very much in the eye of the beholder.

That being said,Life,in the biological sense,is quite wondrous.A pity so many waste it.

I really can't give you any advice because I'm not sure. Not everything is awesome, a lot of things are, so enjoy life as much as you can, that's all the help I can give. Since you seem perfectly happy as you are, I don't see why I need to help at all. As long as you're enjoying being alive.

Life is a wonderful thing to me, although I may be biased here. Sentience is absolutely amazing too.

Besides, when was the last time you laughed while staring at dirt? It is pretty uncomplicated too, just SiO2, versus the 20 amino acids, the lipids and carbohydrates that combine in specific ways to make an automated individual.

I dont need help. I dont see why you find random things wonderous that are no wonder. Why? What's so special about hearts and suns and atoms? What makes a sun more wonderous then a dog or a brick?

What makes the balloon any less complex then that woman? It requires many humans, years and years of human study, human teamwork, machines, buisiness and who knows what else to make that balloon. It only takes two humans to make another.

Your chances of going to a random planet and finding life are ridiculously higher then going to a random planet and finding something like that.

Being awe-struck by the sun and enjoying life are two very different things.
Title: Re: Oh the wonders of life

Whenever I sit up for the dawn, it leaves me with a glow that lasts the entire day. I don't spend that day praising the sun, I spend it doing whatever I had planned for that day, but nevertheless, I always enjoy the dawn. It's not enjoying life, but it's a part of it.

I think perhaps wonder is too strong a word, but it's nice every now and then to simply bask in, well, life.

I really don't see your problem here. Hell, I don't know what we're arguing about. The definition of life? What makes it a good thing? How to enjoy ourselves?

This really is pointless.

Actually, I think I'll stop here and now. I don't really know where this is going, I don't care and nothing Cow says will make me see anything in any more of a mundane way than I already do.

Your chances of going to a random planet and finding life are ridiculously higher then going to a random planet and finding something like that.
I think you have just answered your own question. "Your chances of going to a random planet and finding dirt are ridiculously higher than going to a random planet and finding life" or something like that. It is the system that is making it work, the unlikelihood of it all.
But yes, the is still up to the opinion of the viewer and interpreter.
Funny that you mentioned that it was nothing more than a more complex "1+1=2" when in fact numbers, or the numbers one and zero are insanely complicated concepts thought up by man. There is nothing such as one whole thing, as that would effectively need a standard template for what is "one", but since no two objects can be exactly the same, it is impossible. Thus there is no such thing as a number one. We thought it up as a sort of imposed standard upon ...well something.
It is wondrously complex, and fun. It is wonderful in the same way that people admire art, and its wonder. It is no more than a mathematical representation of the universes building blocks put together in an incredibly complex pattern, but wha'eva. It doesn't matter, right?
No, it doesn't. Well, I hope I have been able to inform you exactly "why" it is wonderous.
