Title: Beginner's Mafia 12: Game over. Mafia win.
Post by: Criptfeind on June 11, 2010, 02:57:29 pm
Welcome to Beginner's Mafia! This is the Twelfth run of our Beginner's Mafia series. In Beginner's Mafia, you will be pitted up with a Town IC (Inexperienced Challenged) who will help you play the game, and will be just as clueless, if not more so, about the setup as you, and a Mafia IC, who will be helping out the Mafia.

In Mafia, you are divided into two parts: Town and Mafia:
If you are Town, your goal is to lynch the Mafia. You do this by convincing others that one of the group is scum, and getting enough votes on them to lynch them.
If you are Mafia, your goal is to kill off the Town until there is an equal number of them to you by getting them to lynch other Town or by killing them. You are given a kill each Night to kill any player in the game.

Each Day, you all vote to lynch a player. Each Night, you send in your actions. The cycle continues until one side wins. Days are 72 hours and nights are 48. Weekends count for zero hours.

You may not PM other players. The mafia will have a place to talk to themselves.

In this setup, there are the possibility of extra roles. These roles are Cop and Doctor for Town, and Roleblocker and Godfather for Mafia.
A Cop inspects any player at Night. They are told that player's alignment.
A Doctor may protect any player at Night. This stops that player from being killed.
A Roleblocker stops an extra role from using an action. This stops Doctors and Cops but does nothing for Townies.
A Godfather makes Cops get Town for their alignment, instead of Mafia.

There is a 50% chance for any of these roles to show up. It is possible to end up with no extra roles.

I'll help Eduren with IC'ing the town.

Although I bet he's better at it than I am purely because I don't even check the Beginner Mafia threads. Hehe. Still, I can just yell at lurkers if nothing else.

Post by: Criptfeind on June 26, 2010, 08:42:11 pm
Police chief criptfeind sighed, then glanced again at the nine folders before him.  His gaze moved up and over the faces of those represented therein.  New recruits all, fresh from the academy.  He took a long draw from his cigarette, and began to speak.

"This morning I received an anonymous tip, with some rather, well, unfortunate implications."

Quizzical looks, some fidgeting.  Nothing telling.  Nothing he could work with.

"It seems that two of you are being paid off by the local mafia."

A gasp or two, surreptitious glances.  They're too green, he thought.  All of them dropping scumtells left and right.

"In light of this, the nine of you will be working together on your first assignment.  A sort of trial by fire.  You see, I can't have traitors on the force.  Won't stand for it.  Your mission will be to root out the traitors and see them executed.  We'll do one execution every evening.  Whoever the majority thinks is scum gets to take a trip to the morgue, then you can all go home for the night, and we'll do it again the next day.  If you're serious about this job, you keep showing up and you root out the scum."

Outright shock on most of their faces.  One or two of them looked like they'd be sick.  Still nothing that would allow him to cut this short before it even began.  Ah well.  One doesn't get to be Chief of Bay12 Police by coddling newbies.

"The investigation starts now.  Good luck."

Here's a tip- putting "I dunno" near your vote is a bad idea, as it makes it look like you don't care about it.  If you're town, your vote is your only real tool, so wasting it reflects badly on your alignment- especially since it's not the first vote on me.  I could theorize on a scumteam of you and weird beard, but I'll let it slide this time.

Anyway, while I wait for Thendash, I'll ask Lonewolf who, among these folks, he thinks would be hardest to catch as scum.  You may say yourself if you like.

Yes, Ottofar, I've only posted once. And so have you apparently. Last game I posted way too early and it ended up causing me to go down looking like a flaming asshole, so this game I've decided to think before I post! Huzzah!

Toaster: Probably Lonewolf I, I've read a game with him in it as town and he seemed pretty good and I think he'd do equally as well as scum.
Ottofar: Four games and not scum once? If being scum is truly random then the odds are stacked against(with?) you that you are scum. But very well, I don't want to keep this bandwagon going against someone that hasn't done anything scummy(yet...). Unvote

Lonewolf I: No one has a vote on you. I've got a question, do I have to have a vote on someone?

Well, you certainly don't have to.  However, most of the time if you don't have a vote on someone and you aren't actively pushing them for scumtells, it can be seen as scummy.  Not using your vote to hunt scum makes it look like you don't care about finding scum, which is something only scum would do.

Unvote.  Fair enough, but see Gambler's Fallacy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gambler%27s_fallacy)

Bandages:  Since you thought before you posted, what was your thinking in putting a third vote on Ottofar?

Ottofar: Why do you think he put a third vote on you?  Also, how do you intend to play differently that you have in past games where you were mislynched for your behavior?

USEC_OFFICER, very punny.  What do you think of wolfchild so far?

All I can say is that he has posted a lot. And changed his vote once, due to him baiting? Taco Dan. Not much to say besides that.

Wolfchild: Haven't heard from me? I've posted twice already.
Haven't heard of me? This is my very first mafia game so that's probably why.

Unvote, thank you for answering my question. I figured that it'd be better to save my vote for someone I truly deam scummy rather then throw it around randomly like at the start. Since as toaster said, as town my only real tool I have is my vote.

Taco Dan: You don't seem to care too much about your vote. Your first vote was against the person that voted for you and you asked if they had a better reason and yet you did not provide a reason yourself as to why you voted them. Then your second vote was again without a given reason. A defensive vote and a random vote both with no reasons given seems kind of scummy to me.

Unvote

To be honest I haven't been keeping track of who has how many votes except for myself. It was just a defensive reaction to vote for the person who voted for me in the first round. Could we get a list of who has how many votes cast against them so far? That would be infinately helpful.

If everyone avoided bandwagoning at all costs, we'd never get anywhere.  Just make sure you have a very good reason for casting a vote on someone who already has 2+ votes, so that you can explain why you did it if someone calls you on it.

I will need a 1/3 vote to make a extension. Votes against the extension count as negative one.

IE: If two people are voting for a extension in a nine player game and than one votes against they will need two more to vote for the extension.

Please bold anything you want me to see.

One extension heard. Two more needed to add 24 hours to the deadline.

Wolfchild, complimenting someone in any way, for any reason, in any situation is a scumtell called "buddying".  Scum do it to get townies on their side and effectively garner an extra vote for the scumteam to use.  I know it's a fairly jarring shift in socializing, and it makes everyone on the board seem like jerks during games, but you'll get used to it.

Frankly, I couldn't care less if I was the only one voting for you. Since you can't accept the fact that you could be lynched, and are trying your hardest to prevent it, strikes me as kinda scummy. I'll also point out that fact that toaster has been on several other mafia games. And, since him and me were tied with you to be lynched, I could say that you are picking on me because of my lesser experience. (However you could just be aggressive.)

Well I feel "You don't want to lose" is a pretty flimsy argument seeing as no player in the game would want to be lynched, scum or not. The reason I chose you over toaster is because toaster is a lot less lurk-y and because he has been actively scumhunting (or if he is scum, actively pretending to scumhunt), where as you just kinda dropped a vote on me and sat there with it on, and faded back into lurking.

and I'm trying to be aggressive ;) Scum hunting is a bloodsport.

(Still kinda RVSish when we're starting to move out of it, but I wanted to pick your brain.  Plus, I'm sure you will be giving us your suspicions anyway.  Right?)

Of course I'll give my suspicions. But first, your question. I would want either you or Lonewolf on my team as scum. You guys strike me as the more skilled players here. I would want the more skilled players to be either on my side or dead.

Now, for my suspicions. Hmm, I would say my top suspicions are USEC_OFFICER and Taco Dan.

USEC: Never changed his random vote at the start. Then lots of active lurking, never contributing much. When he finally gives "justification" to his vote, he said that Bandages was trying his hardest to prevent him getting lynched. I don't find someone trying not to die very scummy on it's own. Also, Bandages actions seems like someone calling out another player for leaving a reasonless random vote on him all game. USEC's response that he is trying to keep himself(Bandages) from getting lynched seems like him making shit up to justify his vote.

Taco: Does not seem to care about where his vote lies. Since their vote is the only weapon a townie has against the scum, a townie should care a lot more about where their vote goes. It would make sense for the scum to not care about their vote since they have the night kill. He also just resaid what Lonewolf has stated about USEC, and voted for USEC after Lonewolf. Not exactly the most subtle way to bandwagon. All in all, though, I consider USEC to be way more scummy than Taco.

I'm not going to comment (or vote either way) on a shorten at this point.

I do want this out before we see a day end, though:

Unvote.  Vote Taco Dan.

I just did a thread reread, and you're really standing out to me.  First, you vote me for basically no reason, without bothering to put a question with it.

Hmm, you have been a pirate before, you downgraded to mafia now TACO DAN?
wolfchild, is that your only reason? Or can you back it up?

You're awfully jumpy here.  That was just a random vote, and you take it like a real vote.

Taco Dan:  If you were scum and someone got your scumbuddy lynched, would you kill them in the night that night?
Probably, but I'm not, so I won't.

I didn't ask you if you were scum, yet you're quick to tell me you aren't.

UESC_Officer what have you got against self-preservation, hmm? Trying to pin the scum on someone else, maybe? Making up scumtells is classic scum behavior.

Clear bandwagon.  You're the fourth vote on him with no original reasoning.

You all gather around USEC_OFFICER... it must be done... you must kill today...

Bang...

You stand around his body as if waiting for something to happen... nothing does...
You check his wallet to see if there is anything... you notice that he has no money... only overdue bills for a credit card...
Obviously no one was paying this Towny off.

It is now night, you are not allowed to post at night, night will end on Monday in 96 (I think) hours.

Anyone who has a night action should now Pm me.

Night can end faster if the Pms come in faster.

You all wake up and make your way to the station... all but one of you that is Diablous is missing! You all run to his home to find out where he is and a gruesome sight greets you. Diablous is siting in his chair face swelled and discolored with a great red mark around his neck. He must have been strangled last night! Obviously this was the work of the mafia you are trying to catch, a warring perhaps of what will happen to all of you if you do not catch them.

wolfchild - reading back, it seems like you know a lot more than a typical newbie would, or at least have been reading the wiki.  I think your buddying earlier wasn't an accident.  Your vote on USEC was just a call to stop lurking, too.  No attack.  That's a count of bandwagoning as well.

Taco Dan - I've been looking back over your earlier posts and I saw you were caught by wolfchild early on with a scumtell and then pleaded to not knowing as your excuse, and then continued to play that card until the end of day 1. Even I, who effed up completely last game, have learned the basics of what is scummy and not from just one game and looking at a few others. I think maybe you might know a bit more than you let on, and the whole "I am new and what is this" is an act.

Unrelated: Just what exactly does the town IC do? Two games I've been in and I haven't seen a single helpful post from either.

They're supposed to help out if town is struggling.  The reason you haven't seen them be active is because they think we're doing well.

I'm not supposed to actively push anybody.

Don't let anybody go until you think you know their alignment. If your attacks aren't working, come from another direction. Letting attacks go too early is a mistake that experience players make. I'm worried some of you are letting others go because they're newbies. Don't do that.

Bandages and wolfchild are being way too eager to start a bandwagon on Taco Dan.  Neither of you had an argument when you first voted USEC, either.

Hey, I don't want to be held accountable for other people voting the same way I do. Also, I feel like I had a fairly solid (or at least the only viable) argument against USEC when he refused to change his vote no matter how suspicous it looked.

wolfchild, why would you cast a third vote so soon in the day when the person you voted for has done nothing different from other members of the group that voted for USEC? It seems odd that you would be so quick to draw attention to yourself and taco dan.

I believe I have cracked this case, gentlemen!

First up, I believe I mentioned Taco Dan.  See my post here (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=59066.msg1367727#msg1367727) for why.  I'm eagerly anticipating his reply to this, as he never did yesterday.

Scum number 2?  Wolfchild.  Today he starts off his vote on TD, then... backs off it when called on a bandwagon?  You wanted to vote him but you don't want to appear like a bandwagon?  Scum, scum, scum.  Townies don't apologize for their actions (like you did on the USEC vote).  You're acting like you don't want to appear scummy, but in doing so, you flood the room with scummitude.  I damn near want to take you out first over TD.

And that's just today!  Look at yesterday- first thing that happens is an interplay between TD and WC.  That's a nice attempt at distancing, but it's too blunt, and now painfully obvious.  Once they go back and forth a bit, they unvote and go their merry way onto other people.

Go ahead- try and refute me.

ok toaster what you said about dont want to appear bandwagoning, ive been told time and again its bad, and this is my 1st game so im cautious, i had no real reasons of my own as to why taco should be voted because i have been swayed by other peoples arguements, and if i was scum and he was, why would i vote him at all?
Title: Re: Beginner's Mafia 12: Day two. Breathing troubles?
Post by: Toaster on July 03, 2010, 10:33:11 pm
You blew your chance at not appearing to bandwagon when you voted him.  If you have sound arguments to back up your vote, it's fine.  A "me too" vote does not help your case.  "I had no reasons of my own" really doesn't help your case.  If you really think he's scum, read over his old posts and look for more reasons.

Second question- it's called bussing, as in "to throw under the bus."  It's where scum A is clearly lynch bait, so scum B votes him to look more townie.

Please continue playing, but if you decide to quit, at least tell us ASAP so we can arrange a replacement for you, and the game can continue. It's nice to the rest of the players.

If you're faking giving up, don't. The problem with "giving up" is that it then forces the town to lynch you. Either you're a bad, bad townie that the town is better off without, or you're scum trying to do a gambit. Either way, you're the obvious lynch target. And once there's a lynch target for the day, it's difficult (but not impossible) to get more scumhunting done. If you're feeling discouraged that people suspect you, don't be. It's the point of the game. If you get discouraged whenever things aren't going 100% your way, you're not going to be having fun playing mafia. Even the best of us get massive amounts of suspiscion for no reason. Shit happens, don't worry about it too much. It's a game. Besides, if you're town, just calmly explain why you think Bandages is scum. Don't worry too much about appearing scummy. I mean, don't post if your reasoning is bullshit, but don't fret about appearing town-like. Your towniness will show through in the end, and if it doesn't, well, at least you learned something and had fun. And if you're scum, look for townies doing things more scummy than you! Get the moronic townies to vote for the poor bastard!

Yeah, yeah, I'm supposed to be helping the town, blah blah blah. I don't care.

I think you're worrying too much about how other people see you, which is in fact scummy. You should be focusing more on catching scum (or pretending to catch scum).

Here's a hint: If you're thinking about not doing something because you're worried other people will think you're scummy for doing so, do it.

No vote.  Not even a FoS. (Finger of Suspicion. That's when the name is blue.  Means you think they're scum but already have your vote on some other scum.)

well then vote me if you must, im new to the game and have made bad decisions already, maby itl help the town if you destroy me anyway, and i am realy not good at making my own decisions, perhaps i should just not play mafia, but off that topic, i think perhaps Bandages Has been acting scummy, but then all the newbs have, we dont know better

Unvote.

Congrats, wolfchild, you're now well scummier than Taco Dan.  When called on backing off your vote, you jump right back on it, still without original reasoning.

(Mr. Person covered it pretty well, but to sum it up again- if you act without explaining why you act, it tends to look scummier than if you tell everyone why you're doing that.  Remember, the town gains nothing from withholding reasoning of your actions.  The scum team is the informed team- the more information the town has, the better we are at catching the scum.)

I have a suspicion that Toaster is scum. Why? He's been trying to bring up points that have already been explained and calling people out for lying, laying suspicion on other people, so he can save his ass.
That said, I'm sorry if my obvious bandwagoning seemed like scummy behavior, what I should've said is that LonewolfI had a good point, but obviously I was wrong.

You don’t really say this, it is tempting I know but don’t. The fact is you don’t know Taco is scum unless you are scum with him so if you are wrong and they do lynch him you wasted a day. If you know you are going to be lynched and want them to lynch somebody the next day gather every bit of evidence and accuse them, it will lend weight to your words if you die and let the others to decide if they think he is scum. Also the whims of the town are fickle if you keep playing and play good they may not lynch you.

i KNOW(read i will look like a fool most likely) that taco is scum...
How exactly do you "know" he's scum? There's a 50% chance there's a cop, are you saying that you are a cop and you searched Taco Dan? If you're the cop and you've hit scum, now might be the time to tell us so that we don't lynch the cop. Sure, you'll probably be night killed unless there's a doctor but we'll at least get to lynch one of the scum in the process which sounds like a good trade to me since there's fewer scum then us. Until you answer to my acusations, I vote wolfchild.
You've been lurky, you've bandwagoned, you flop votes between taco dan and bandages without and real reason given which looks a lot like you're trying to distance yourself from bandages, and you won't give any good reasons as to why you're voting people even though you've been called on it many times.

Sorry I've been away the last few days. I'm Canadian and my Canada Day celebrations lasted until yesterday. So it should go without saying that for the last few days I haven't really been in any condition to play mafia.

Right, people, either you agree with me or not.  If you don't, you should be prodding who you suspect.  If you do, you should still question those two to help confirm suspicions.  Remember, I could be wrong here (I doubt it.)

Weird beard, this goes double for you, as you haven't posted since your one post today.  I wouldn't mind more from Bandages as well.

Anyway, to break this tie, I'm going to unvote and switch to voting Taco Dan.  As long as one of them goes, I'm good.

I think both Taco Dan and wolfchild are scum and I've already posted my reasons why for both of them so if either of them go I'm happy. This is more or less a post in response to the prod, to show that I am here. I was going to vote for a shorten but I guess that's unecessary now.

You all gather around Taco Dan. You don't want to but you know you need to.

Snicker-Snack

You go over his belonging but it becomes painfully obvious he is a Towny

You all wake up to a single shot in the night. You run to the home of  Toaster  to find a horrifying sight awaiting you. Toaster head has been shot. At close range. By a shot gun. It is only by the fact he has his name sown into his underwear that you can identify him…

You know that if you do not kill scum today all is lost.

If a cop died, then they would've flipped cop, not townie.

Those two posts sound quite a bit like rolefishing, though.  Bandages, yours is more direct, and I already suspect you of being scum seeing as how you've been posting fairly sparsely yet still played an active role in the lynching of two townies.

Rolefishing at lylo is generally acceptable since everyone is going to claim anyways. Of course, the only person who's going to make a meaningful claim is a Cop. A Doctor shouldn't claim since that player still has time to block a kill.

Good luck on the final day! One tip for you all; reread all the posts from the previous days. All of the posts are there, they're not going anywhere. Pay attention to posts made by the dead townies. In particular, focus on players killed in the night. These players were chosen as threats to the scum.

Also, keep a look out for who voted who in what order. In general, players who move their vote on to a large bandwagon tend to be scum trying to capitalize on a group of townies voting another townie.

Wolfchild N2 - Town (Surprisingly)
I'm very surprised by that since he was a the top of my list now. But we also have to remember that there is a chance for a godfather role so I think we should still keep an eye on him just in case. We obviously don't want to lynch him on lylo based on the gamble that he is scum and that he has the godfather role since that just doesn't sound like a good idea at all.

How can it be bandwagoning if I cast the first vote each time? Honest question, I always have assumed bandwagoning was the act of jumping on the bandwagon, not accidentally starting it.

Lonewolf I, right now you're top on my suspect list. Looking back through the thread, you've been confidently casting votes against townies and covering your tracks with a lot of long-winded descriptions of what a town would do, so as to cover your tracks.

Claiming cop with information we all know already is a pretty safe way to pretend to be a cop. Until everyone posts, I can't believe you're the cop. Defend yourself, ye scum.

Weird Beard, you've done nothing but drop votes on townies. That is incredibly scummy in and of itself, but combined with the fact that you simply lurk 90% of the game, without doing any scumhunting makes me think that you are scum, and are perhaps in cahoots with LonewolfI

In this case it's not that you jumped on a bandwagon, it's that you stuck with one despite not having reasonable justification for your vote in the first place.  Technically not bandwagoning, yes, but very much related and also pretty scummy.

Lonewolf I, right now you're top on my suspect list. Looking back through the thread, you've been confidently casting votes a gainst townies and covering your tracks with a lot of long-winded descriptions of what a town would do, so as to cover your tracks.
You sure you're not getting this game confused with one of my other ones?  And where have I been consistently voting townies?  Lynching USEC D1 was near random, and I haven't voted any town since...

You're cornered, and you can't find anything on me, so you're making stuff up.  Good show, scum.

Claiming cop with information we all know already is a pretty safe way to pretend to be a cop. Until everyone posts, I can't believe you're the cop. Defend yourself, ye scum.
Defend myself from what?  False statements?  If I only had info that was already known, I wouldn't have claimed.  A town result on wolfchild is not common knowledge.  If you have already reasoned wolfchild's role and/or alignment from previous posts or from your own role, please give us an explanation.  The only way I can think of that you would have that kind of info is if you were scum.

Weird Beard, you've done nothing but drop votes on townies. That is incredibly scummy in and of itself, but combined with the fact that you simply lurk 90% of the game, without doing any scumhunting makes me think that you are scum, and are perhaps in cahoots with LonewolfI

Day 1 I started the bandwagon with the only reasonable argument that day, since it was just random voting before that point.

You sure you're not getting this game confused with one of my other ones?  And where have I been consistently voting townies?  Lynching USEC D1 was near random, and I haven't voted any town since...

You're cornered, and you can't find anything on me, so you're making stuff up.  Good show, scum.

Yeah, Toaster wasn't a town or anything. That was sarcasm. Because he was. And you voted for him. But if you want to claim I am making stuff up, then you should actually make sure I am.

A town result on wolfchild is not common knowledge.  If you have already reasoned wolfchild's role and/or alignment from previous posts or from your own role, please give us an explanation.  The only way I can think of that you would have that kind of info is if you were scum.

While criptfiend never explicitly said he was town, wolf child himself claimed he was town and that he wanted to quit. I assumed that since he was quitting, he had no reason to lie. Call me scum all you want, but it's a completey fair call to make on my part.

You yourself have done nothing but drop votes on townies without doing any scumhunting...

What is your definition of scumhunting? Because mine is "Hunting for scum" which I have been actively doing. Just because I don't change my vote after I think someone is scum doesn't mean that I am not hunting for them. Not to mention, I was scumhunting throughout the first two days, unlike weird beard who dropped one vote post then faded into the crowd. The fact you're defending him just makes it more viable that you two are the scum and that you are working together. Until I hear word from him, though, I can't say for certain.

Bandages, I looked back at your posts and this is what I've dug up:

Bandages, you've posted once?

Also, there was something strange about our internetz, so I couldn't post before this.

Unvote

Yes, Ottofar, I've only posted once. And so have you apparently. Last game I posted way too early and it ended up causing me to go down looking like a flaming asshole, so this game I've decided to think before I post! Huzzah!

Bandages:  Since you thought before you posted, what was your thinking in putting a third vote on Ottofar?

Unvote

To be honest I haven't been keeping track of who has how many votes except for myself. It was just a defensive reaction to vote for the person who voted for me in the first round. Could we get a list of who has how many votes cast against them so far? That would be infinately helpful.
What I see happening here is, someone votes you, so you defensvely vote them back. If you were towny you should have nothing to fear about being voted, especially during rvs, since you should be able to explain your actions. But that's not it, afterwards toaster calls you on third voting ottofar so you immediatly unvote because you feel threatened by the now proven towny toaster discovering your plan to try and start a quick bandwagon on ottofar. This is also probably why you night killed toaster, you were smart though and waited so that it would be harder for us to make a connection. Then since you didn't manage to lynch otto you night killed his replacment.

You then wait a real life day and:
USEC_Officer, why haven't you changed your vote since the start of the game? Planning on sneakily offing me are ya?
Anouther defensive vote in response to a rvs vote. Then:

Actually i think bandages has a good point USEC, and you have been almost invisible during this session so unvote
Defend youreself USEC_Officer
Your scum buddy godfather wolfchild swoops in and puts a third vote on poor USEC. Then Taco Dan falls for your accusations and fourth votes USEC and basically finalizes the day 1 lynch.

I'm not going to outright vote bandages since I think it's kind of unfair right now since we're basiclly down two people, so I'll wait until weird beard posts and wolfchild has gotten a replacment before I make my final descision.
