Title: Second Station
Post by: westsider_gw on June 23, 2010, 08:10:37 pm
After working on it for several days.. I've got some badly-textured mock-ups of the start of the Arrival Checkpoint for Second Station.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

If anyone wants to help with texturing, I'd be more than willing to accept texture donations.. I just need stuff like walls, screens, panels and
whatever else I can get..

-I've got the networking done so its joinable.. but there's nothing there other than this room.
-I've yet to make the HUD for interfacing with anything (its gonna take awhile).
-Working on gas simulation right now.. its also gonna take me a little bit.

Story takes place years before Space Station 13, and the plasma-engine has not been invented.. instead a combustible mixture
of Gasoline and Oxygen is required to power the station (as well as solar panels still).
..if anyone wants to help come up with more story feel free to contribute, because I'm at loss..

*EDIT* Forgot to add oxygen tank picture.. my bad.
Also, pictures are freaking huge.. sorry- Might not be able to see everything :\

Gasoline on a space station? Wouldn't that take too much oxygen and produce far too little power? Surely a nuclear reactor(fission or fusion) would much better.

*sigh* Youre right..
Nuclear Fission it is..

Looks good thus far.

A lot of SS13-inspired games tend to enter 'development hell'. Hopefully this will be an exception. I'm looking forward to a playable release, good luck!

Im hoping to get it operational soon..
We've got a little team together so hopefully things will speed up. I just made that little scene today after finishing getting the networking BS
working (MySQL + PHP has to be the most evil thing ever).

I'm currently testing the server stability by running it for extended periods of time in local mode.

HOLY SHITS

YOU ACTUALLY HAVE MODELS, [probably] SOME CODE, AND A TEAM

THIS JUST MIGHT WORK.

I'm a half-decent modeller, let me know if there's anything I can help with.

That's awesome to hear, SS13 is now almost unplayable for me due to lag.
Good luck on your project. :D

If this is finished, I will erect a statue in my back yard next to the one of a toad and the one of pantyhosen.

Unfortunately the engine I'm using requires models im .bmp format (formatted for second life, as this is a similar network/graphics engine)
If you look up a a modelling guide for second life with blender or maya (or wings3D even), theres some guides for .bmp exporting.

As for actual models I need.. I can do most everything myself, I just need some of the trickier rounded-edge objects like Plasma/Oxygen tanks..
I can UV map them though, so I dont need their textures.

hm...

Well, I use 3ds max, so if there's an exporter for that modeller I could try.

Right now I'm working on the NanoTransen long range teleportation-center on Earth you start in (equivelant to arrival shuttle) from which you teleport onto the station..

Also, Sukasa, if you want to help model.. theres a software to make it easy called primcomposer you can get if you want.. Never used it myself.
The only time I ever modeled was with Zbrush (and I sucked at it).

So this is in SL eh? Interesting ambition, I wish you lots of luck.

The biggest problem I can see is cheating being even worse due to the fact that you could probably just manipulate the camera in such a way as to see whatever is going on :< A well-scripted HUD attachment script would probably help with that, if it notified everyone of cheaters.

I think west said it was SL-like, not SL-based actually :P

Well, I'm making it from the OpenSimulator engine.. so it actually uses a Second Life viewer..
It was designed as a 'clone' of Second Life, that uses almost the exact resources.

Over the last 5 years or so though, I've mastered SL's LSL scripting language (ported over to OpenSim now and compiles in .NET),
and with the customizeability and the viewer code being OpenSource, it makes a strong platform.

To solve the camera problem, I'm thinking of either 1.) Camera controls in the HUD for 3rd person..
or 2.) Modifying the viewer code so its ONLY in 1st person. No camera control other than that of an FPS.

Still though, despite appearance, its pretty different in code and function from Second Life.

Second life is evil, too many resources.

It 'can' be evil.
But regardless this isnt second life.

I'd help but I can't texture or model.

Well then, that addressed my concerns quite well actually :D Excited to see it, if you need a tester I know my way around a sim and have tinkered with OpenGrid stuff before

I'll get to work on the rest of the models on the list you gave me as soon as I get back from my 2 week vacation that I'm going on tomorrow.

I'm learning to make electronic music / use studios etc..I was thinking on making a chillout, 'space themed' song..
It may take a while because I have a LOT to learn, but I'll send you a link if I make it someday, if you ever think in putting some background music...
:D

Its currently got some streaming .m3u playlist I found on some random internet radio station titled, "Space Ambiance"..
But if you make something and it fits the theme I'd be glad to throw it in :)

Oh also:
