Title: Sushi?
Post by: martinuzz on September 01, 2007, 10:35:00 am
I have this nice fortress with about 170 dwarves. There is plenty food (about 2000) and just about enough booze.
I decided to build a zoo to create some more happy thoughts. In this zoo I dug a 5x5 pond. I already had a live turtle in an aquarium. I ordered some more live fish to be caught and I ordered the turtle to be transferred from the aquarium to the pond. I thought it would be much happier there...
BUT THEN WHAT HAPPENED??? Along comes this pesky noble.. He wades in the pond, GRABS THE LIVE TURTLE AND TAKES IT TO HIS DINING ROOM TO EAT IT RAW!!
Is this a bug or do nobles like sushi?

Are you familiar with the term "indoor plumbing"?

It's alright. Eating raw turtles isn't the WORST they can do.

Yeah, dwarves will do this with lobsters and fish too.
I think it has to do with their food preferences, and where they are located when they task the a food item.

Yeah, I think they'll eat all sorts of live critters.  I'm not sure when they started doing that, but they've been doing it for a while.  A live purring maggot that was eaten was Bug 321, so I'll add this into that description next time I update the list.

I think you can solve the problem in-game by building a food stockpile that accepts the DEAD variants of the displayed water critters all the way around the pond. This should reduce the odds of a dwarf going fishing without a license, at least if you manage to keep the stockpile filled.(set #barrels=0) I don't know if fish are eaten from an aquarium as well, but if so the same trick should work.
