Title: The Slender Man Mythos Thread ["The next time I see you I'LL KILL YOU!"]
Post by: MetalSlimeHunt on November 04, 2010, 08:06:20 pm
That's right, folks! With Marble Hornets Season 2 looking like it's about to start up again soon, and Seeking Truth having gotten a few unexpected updates recently, I've decided to make a unified thread on the Slender Man Mythos.

Don't know what I'm talking about? Shame on you! There are so many horrible nightmares that you have missed!

It isn't safe to go without not knowing what the Slender Man is, take this!

Marble Hornets (http://www.youtube.com/user/marblehornets) (A good place to begin your doom adventure!)
totheark (http://www.youtube.com/user/totheark) (A Marble Hornets related item. Begin watching after Entry 9 of Marble Hornets for maximum doubleplusgoodness.)
The Marble Hornets Twitter Page (http://twitter.com/marblehornets) (Yes, in character.)
Just Another Fool (http://jafool.wordpress.com/2009/07/29/this-is-what-happens/) (Why look, a blog! Nothing suspicious here, no siree!)
Seeking Truth (http://openthedoorandyouwillfindme.blogspot.com/2010/03/assignment.html) (This blog will not devour your soul. Just kidding, by the time you get to this link I know you won't be able to get away.)
The Mystic (http://helpingthosehelpthemselves.blogspot.com/2010/12/more-i-observe-situation-going-on.html) (Continutes from Seeking Truth)
EverymanHYBRID (http://www.youtube.com/everymanHYBRID#p/a) ( A Youtube channel dedicated to health and fitness. One of these things is in fact like all the others.)
WickedStickyAlex (http://www.youtube.com/user/WickedStickyAlex) ( A EverymanHYBRID related item. This Youtube channel belongs to Jeff's little brother Alex.)
TribeTwelve (http://www.youtube.com/tribetwelve) (More video from which you may make mind-rending horrors. Gets better as it goes on.)
Dare 2 Die (http://ulrycdaretodie.blogspot.com/2010/09/first-post.html) (That's right children, another blog! Unfinished for the time being, and somewhat bland, but you'll know when you reached the reason I decided to bring this one up. Or perhaps you won't.)

This thread exists for general discussion (Yes, shocking, I know.), speculation, and judging of various aspects of the Slender Man Mythos. Expect unhidden spoilers from this point onwards.

Might be worth linking to the EH twitter, that blog run by Jess' friend, and the Unfiction forums thread (which is where most of the ARG stuff happens - picking up and unboxing the packages, for instance). EH is by far the most ARG and interwoven series. Oh, and the SomethingAwful thread where it all started, too.

For beginners, start with Marble Hornets, then move onto EverymanHYBRID. TribeTwelve is alright, but it suffers from being a largely shameless MH clone to start with (although the latest few entries have started to hint Noah's found his feet and is becoming it's own thing). All (all the cool dudes, that is~) of us on IRC have watched them via Synchtube and it's been great fun. Would be happy to do it again with some forumites if you want a combination of absolute horror and snarky commentary.

After briefly checking out the source material (some of the pics in the original SA thread are awesome;  bricks were shat), I started watching Marble Hornets.  The storytelling is like a cross between this (http://www.angelfire.com/trek/caver/) and the Blair Witch Project.  Also, the Twitter is helpful.  I would've overlooked totheark's responses without it.  Fun stuff.

Marble Hornets for me, occasionally everymanHYBRID (though the acting is quite unbelievable at times). I've tried the blogs, but they just don't do it for me. I guess it's that they just don't seem as real. *shrug*

I've only read a bit of Seeking Truth actually; just the first five-ish posts. I've been told it's good but I much prefer the video format, I dunno. Maybe I'll go back and do it some time.

I do like the anger-as-defense idea, though, and it'd make sense. We'll see. That might make Jeff somewhat protected as well, as he's got a lot of girlfriend-was-taken rage going on right now too. Evan, of course, is just... Evan.

I'm pretty sure this (http://www.youtube.com/user/WickedStickyAlex#p/u/0/ExrT8OHJiKc) is a legitimate add-on to the EverymanHYBRID stuff considering how the same actor for Jeff is in both of them.
Title: Re: The Slender Man Mythos Thread

One should never underestimate the potential of people (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EknMZ8ypnZ0&feature=rec-exp_fresh+div-1r-3-HM)  to turn ANYTHING into comedy. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_jW5WApYGQ&NR=1)

I think I've figured out what needs to happen with Slender Man. A group project with Tribe Twelve's special effects, Marble Hornet's storytelling, and EverymanHYBRID's acting. It'll never happen, but it would be the best thing ever/kill everyone who watches it through critical heart failure.

It's very well done, but went for about a minute too long, and even though it's probably the best TribeTwelve vid so far, it just screams "THIS IS MY TOTHEARK PHASE OF MY RIPOFF HOMAGE TO MARBLE HORNETS". It's obvious he has the skills, and he's getting better and better, but I just wish he'd try doing something different.
Title: Re: The Slender Man Mythos Thread
Post by: Retro on November 12, 2010, 03:57:04 pm
Caught it earlier; going to have to go along with what Das said though:

Quote
<Dasleah> hey new TribeTwelve vid
<Dasleah> aaaaaand it looks like it's the totheark phase of his blatant MH ripoff phase
<Dasleah> nicely done though
<Dasleah> /really/ well done

It's definitely a very well done video (and I like the style of it a lot more than the original MH totheark style stuff as well), though I still don't feel that much that the significantly better effects of TT have caused it to really break away from MH yet. I continue to love that TT is using the "he's got tentacles, ohhhh tentacles~" part of the original Slendy mythos though.

e- sunuva-- Dasleah you aren't allowed to ninja me when I'm talking about you >:|

New EverymanHYBRID (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWwYHm96CVY&feature=sub)

This isn't going to end well. I think it's pretty safe to say that the situation has gotten seriously FUBAR'd when Evan is the only HYBRID who's working towards their mutual survival anymore.

EDIT:

Three little pigs? Not the trusting sort? A Big Bad Wolf coming for them? Each possessing a house built of straw, sticks, or bricks?

Could...could this be about the EverymanHYBRID team?

Perhaps. I missed Slenderman's apperance in this one, though. Can't find him, but I know he must show up at some point, having been in every Entry other than #16. Still, it isn't very Genre Savvy to stay in a hotel bordering a forest in this mythos.

Good to see that Marble Hornets isn't over. When it comes to Slenderman, there's only one way for it to be over.

Just watched MarbleHornets straight through. That was awesome.

Way to make a fan out of me, you jerks D:<

I'mma start on EverymanHYBRID later.

The only thing that confused me about MarbleHornets was the relation between the mask guy and Slenderman. I'm sure that's explored in greater detail in the stuff I haven't watched/read yet though.

Nope. There's a reason the goals and intent towards Jay of both Totheark and Slenderman make up more than half of the Marble Hornets WMG page. I've heard people argue them as allies, as evil, as good, as arch-rivals, as freaking everything.

God I love the creative output of the Internet :D

I'm a big creepypasta fan, though. Love it. I love most horror/creepy things on the internet, though. I was big on The Holders series (http://theholders.org) for a while.

I don't like shock films though; not a fan of slashers, not big on excessive blood and gore. Subtle, psychological horror is my favorite, and Slenderman is right there for me. Thank you for making this thread so I could discover it.

I just drove 70 miles down an isolated country road surrounded by woodland in the middle of the night going home for thanksgiving.

Unfortunately, I wasn't even thinking about Slenderman at the time and it was only when I got home that I thought about the imminent danger I was in :o

Hokay, all caught up on EH.

I have to say, I really liked it more when it was just the three main guys and they were consistently being shadowed by Slendy. Now it's like... a whole bunch of their friends and family that I don't really remember anything about (or really care about because they've only shown up once or twice before) and... well, all this other creepypasta mythology they're adding is cool, but I'm really most interested in Slender Man. A bit of the Rake is cool, but this heavy emphasis on that and boxes being hidden places and this HABIT fellow... well, let's hope it all pays off with something awesome :\ EH has been meandering quite a bit for me lately.

I don't know about Slenderman wanting Evan dead. He's had ample oppertunity, hell, Evan outright attacked him on one occasion. I think Slendy wants to make Evan a pawn for him, to strike at the other HYBRIDs when they least expect it. However, given his badassness so far, my prediction is that Evan Heroic Willpowers his way out of the sanity slippage, because he just hates Slendy that much.
Title: Re: The Slender Man Mythos Thread [Marble Hornets Season 2 Started!]

If Slender could straight up kill somebody, such as when Evan was attacking him, I don't think he'd bother having Evan attack the HYBRIDs for him.

Slendy could probably kill all of them in a second if he wanted to. I think he might thrive off of their suffering, or somthing, and having your friend attack you with a knife has to be emotionally traumatizing.

Just watched EverymanHYBRID and TribeTwelve. Read Seeking Truth as well.

The earlier poll may be closed but I thought I'd just throw in that I thought TribeTwelve was my favorite. It's the only one that has actually managed to scare me so far. I think Noah himself is what makes it so effective.

EverymanHYBRID is just kind of humorous.

And MarbleHornets, well, is MarbleHornets. It's just more interesting/fascinating than scary.

Also: No wifin' in da club.

Well, should you give up looking, there are videos uploaded that point out when he appears in each one.

Links, please.

I could only find 2-3 videos.  One was mostly useless, the other only showed him in a few entries, and another only showed several up through #14 but left out quite a few.

Also, are the MH entries (and to a lesser extent some bits of EMH) waaay dark for everyone else?  I can't see shit, despite playing with my monitor's brightness/contrast.  I figure half the reason I've missed several/most Slendy appearances (esp. entry #5 where I clearly saw the tear but still couldn't find the sumbitch) is because of my display.  Seriously, I'm pretty sure I only saw him in half the entries tops.

They are way dark - the idea is that they're being filmed by amateurs.

In MH 5, Slendy is just to the left of a tree that is itself just to the left of where the frame stays focused most of the scene. The camera pans to the left briefly I think twice throughout the video; he's only visible then. I missed this appearance I think the first two times I watched it, it's pretty easy to miss - he is just standing right there once you spot him though.

They are way dark - the idea is that they're being filmed by amateurs.

Also, anyone know of some good games that freak you out like MH or EmH do?

I kinda figured part of the dark was my display or something.  Slendy's awfully hard to see sometimes for good reason (e.g. entry #5 obscured by trees in the distance, apparently), but I don't see how the hell he could be hiding anywhere but pitch darkness in some of the others.  For example, I don't recall seeing him in the house (you know the one).  When J appears in the dilapidated old building, he doesn't appear in that building so much as part of a disjoint clip (the 1-2 second bit with the IIRC reddish haze/tint).  Either he's damned hard to see or I'm just that terrible at spotting him.

Alright, so perhaps he doesn't. I was originally informed of Slendy showing up in every one besides Entry 16 from TvTropes, but those statements have apparently been deleted, so I guess they were false assumptions. Or, given Retro's post, perhaps he does and we've just missed it.

Also, you may find it useful to watch the EverymanHYBRID Ustream Archives (http://www.ustream.tv/channel/everymanhybrid-live), should you have missed their live shows (I certainly did.). One important detail from the recent livestream that you won't find elsewhere is that

Slendy definitely isn't in all of them - but he tends to be in most, even if only for a few frames. I've heard that sometimes there's a single hidden frame at the end of a video, but haven't cared enough to investigate, really.

Yeah, there are quite a few that he's not in actually. Sometimes it's hinted that he's there, but not actually caught on tape.

It's never given. That said, there's a good chance A.R.K. is his initials, but I'll be waiting for confirmation.

A documentary about hotels?  Pfft.  He should have said urban legends, then refused to give more information.  More fitting that way.  :P

RE House of Leaves:  Supposedly it's convoluted and strangely formatted, very unlike an ordinary novel.  If you do get it, you'll probably want to find a good fan site to help make sense of it.  Of course, the same can be said of some ordinary novel series (I'm looking at you, Wheel of Time, with your million-or-so story threads!).

No.

I've heard people talking about how Slender Man could be Zalgo's "Dragon" and I think that they're completely missing the point. We aren't supposed to know Slender Man's motivations because we can never fully understand him. Sure, he eldritch and all, but not in the traditional Lovecraft style of things outside of reality driving people insane. They're also completely different in what they represent: Zalgo -> chaos, Slender Man -> our primal fears. No need to mix them at all to the dilution of both (mainly Slender Man though, the Zalgo meme is getting tired).

I saw a snowman while driving today that had an unusual design choice for its arms.  They chose what looked like the ends of some minor branches.  No large, central branch.  Rather three or four long, slender offshoots from the same shoulder joint on each side.  They didn't even remove the twigs.  I immediately thought of slenderman.

Watched the first 10 entries, and entry ######. Only saw Slendy the operator 3 times, twice when it was pretty obvious (1 and...6 I think?), and once in 7.

In that case you're pretty screwed when he comes for you.
Bluh. Alex didn't notice him/it either most of the time. Also, I'd be screwed even if I did notice him/it.

Either way, I'm an internet user. I've seen worse than him/it.

Somehow the whole 'oh whoops I got amnesia' thing seems kind of clever to me now that they're making videos set in the past during amnesia time.

Actually, we have.  I don't think it was linked as a response, but Fragments appeared on TTA's channel a few days ago.

Also, this footage supposedly happened between April and the new season.  Tim appeared just recently in entry 33.  So he's clearly still around, if that's what you were getting at.

I have a pretty solid stance on the paranormal: It's all in your head.

I mean people see things, personally I see things all the time, sometimes I turn around and think I see something in the window, usually it's just a trick of my mind, or a reflection of some object behind me.
Then there's hearing things, I live in an old house, it creaks and groans a lot, especially when it's windy, sometimes the wind sounds like someone talking, and sometimes the creaking sounds like someone is walking around in another part of the house, but that's just my mind playing tricks on me again.
My mother also thinks that bloodstains pop up on my clothes before they go through the laundry, but she really just doesn't realize how messy I can get with ketchup.

There really is a logical explanation for everything, I was however happy to have gotten out of this house. In other news I'm back after being in sunny spain for 2 months, I'm glad to get back to the forums, did you guys miss me?

EDIT: Has someone been messing with my sig?

Oh, that isn't the worst part. To me, the worst part is when Jay gets up in the middle of the night, and opens his bedroom door...but the camera on the other side of the door shows it as remaining closed, and Jay vanishes for three hours. A close second would be the depths of Brian's house and whatever weird building it's somehow connected to. Slenderman isn't the only thing with eldritch properties in Marble Hornets, and that's terrifying.

Is that where they are filming right in front of a window and he's right behind them?

If so, then yes. yes it is.

Fan theories currently favor you not being able to see the slenderman if he doesn't want you to see him.

So he could be right behind you or outside your window right now.

I actually find a lot of it laughable.  I haven't watched any of the marble hornets or anything, just seen lots of pictures and read a bunch of the forum thread where the character originated.  Some of the pictures and aspects of the myth are really creepy.  The playground picture... that very first one... especially gets me.  But then the stuff where he's walking around in spider form or just standing there looking like he has an octopus coming out of his back... is just silly looking.  It's not creepy at all.  It loses that uncanny valley unsettlingness.  Completely inhuman eldritch abominations aren't very creepy.  A really tall, lanky guy with abnormally long arms and an unusual stance that nobody notices is there... that's creepy.

Agreed on all counts. Luckily my mind has segmented the Slender Man into 2 personas: the laughable tentacle-man who looks silly and Slender Man who can still creep you at at noon in a crowded building.

Marble hornets has a pretty good atmosphere, especially at the beginning. It gets a bit corny towards the end, but at least be sure to watch up to season 1's finale for what is probably the creepiest appearance of the Slender Man. Not sure what episode it is, but you will know it when you see it.  ;)

Noah's Adventures in Slenderland continue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ioH3ifdEhw), this time with an effect new to TribeTwelve but well-established in MarbleHornets (approx. 7:20-7:25).

I think I've watched too many slendervlogs.  I feel less suspense, more giggly glee.  :P

You know I was considering starting a project that was a slendy game. A 2D platformer at first that started having odd graphical glitches, figures disappearing just as they entered view for a couple of frames, shapes briefly forming in the static of the loading screens, fake errors messages, that kind of thing.

I thought of the same thing.  That game did some very creative things.  The best was when it gave you a false End of Game screen (not Game Over but Surprise You've Finished It).  I honestly dropped my controller and stared at the screen dumbfounded when that happened... and then laughed for like 10 minutes when the game continued.  They did things that really made you question what was going on, instead of just cliche flickers and such.  It requires some very creative fourth wall breaking to pull off with genuine impact.

I've seen that game. Batman Arkham Asylum pulls similar tricks at one point..Call of Cthulhu, Penumbra and Amnesia are in the same vein but the sanity effects aren't so meta.

The problem is I have no idea where to go with that design from "fuck with the player somehow". Ideas born from playing Eversion and then watching Marble Hornets are strange ones, to say the least. Though if anybody ever came to me with a design document and the like I'd probably jump right on board.

After finding this thread, I thought it would be a good idea to start watching Marble Hornets an hour before bed on a week night (this Wednesday). I watched through Entry 19.5. Terrible choices on both parts; managed to stop right after the most traumatizing part. I was surprised that I actually slept about 90 minutes later.

I was specifically ordered after that to not view anything Slender Man related, and I didn't the next day (yesterday). Today I thought "screw it, I need to see more" and watched through the end. The decrease of blind terror and increase of plot pleased me (apart from some rather ridiculous points).
I still didn't watch any after sunset...

Apart from Marble Hornets, I've only watched 2 episodes of EverymanHYBRID and read about half of Just Another Fool. How good are these other series? Same question for the blogs; I don't find them quite as entertaining, though.
And I'm sure not looking at anything until tomorrow morning...

Apart from Marble Hornets, I've only watched 2 episodes of EverymanHYBRID and read about half of Just Another Fool. How good are these other series? Same question for the blogs; I don't find them quite as entertaining, though.

The only blogs I'd recommend, aside from the meta blogs (e.g. Compile Truth, Slenderbloggins), are M's Tutorial (http://getuphigh.blogspot.com/) (extremely influential on later blogs and the mythos in general) and Seeking Truth (http://openthedoorandyouwillfindme.blogspot.com/)/The Mystic (http://helpingthosehelpthemselves.blogspot.com/) (great story).  I've read a few others, but they haven't been as interesting.  The meta blog summaries adequately cover them IMO.  I actually haven't read any of the other well-known ones (like Maduin's, Zero's, Ava's, Reach's, and so forth), so I can't comment on those.

As for video series, Tribe Twelve (http://www.twitter.com/tribetwelve/) has great effects but takes a while to really get going.  The acting remains sub-par, but at least it has acting, unlike most of Marble Hornets.  Angel's Game (http://www.youtube.com/user/theoriginalaliendude) is supposed to be pretty good, but I haven't watched it.  There are several YouTube accounts involved, but the one I linked should have a playlist that includes everything in chronological order.  That's pretty much all I can say on the video front.  I know there are more out there, but I can't say much about them.

Almost forgot to add links to meta blogs:  Compile Truth (http://twitter.com/CompileTRUTH) (jumped the shark recently, but the various summary videos are nice), Slenderbloggins (http://www.slenderbloggins.net/), Golom Tulpa Anima (http://golomtulpaanima.blogspot.com/) (hasn't updated in ages), The Slendy Review (http://slendereview.blogspot.com/) (likewise), Encyclopedia Slenderia (http://slenderia.blogspot.com/) (sporadic updates).

Seems likely as totheark is not very found of spaces, unless Helies is some sort of name.
Of course putting context to that quote is not exactly easy.
Unless I am missing something its just a nebulous accusation at Jay because he is human.

I think on tothearks channel commentators(his are enabled) asked about Jay, and he mentioned Jay not being trust-able because he is human or something like that.
Maybe Jay being human had allowed his perception to be warped by the operator in some way we do not yet know.
