I think Toady commented at some point, "I think I made fish too extreme."
Now, I lost another... 4. This is... arg.
Anyway, upon embark, my hunter (I chose a hunter over a metalsmith due to the scarcity of food, and though I know there's magma, it'll be a while before I get to doing anything with it. I think I made the right choice.) IMMEDIATELY squeezes off a round at a group of hippos that was WAY too close for comfort. It was a heart shot, and it scattered the rest of the hippos. Very cool way to start a fort.
Edited for clarity: As in, what mechanism? What tags? They don't appear to have any special ones...

It was quite awesome. The river was so densely populated with fish that my weapon skill was actually increasing faster than my swimming skill.
I tried a different location later, and got a more tenable starting location, seperated by cliffs from all the water; the river had both undead and regular fish and hippos, and they got into a huge battle right away. There was a while where the entirety of the MAJOR RIVER was red; the undead won, unfortunately, but I had to abandon because four waterfalls and about twenty pages of undead fish gave me a framerate of about 15. =(
