Title: Uh oh... Fish and hippoes!
Post by: Puzzlemaker on February 07, 2008, 08:16:00 pm
So... warm area.  New fort.  Summer hits.  Everything dries up, EXCEPT FOR THE RIVER.  Where all the fish are.  And hippoes.  An UNGODLY amount of hippoes and fish.

Blah blah blah cancels drink:  Interrupted by Carp/Hippo!
Blah blah blah Drowns!

The river is running RED WITH BLOOD.  And its my only source of water.     :(

Edit:  You have got to be... I lost one of my miners to those carp.  Holy crap, this is... wow... Hopefully some migrants come soon...

I think Toady commented at some point, "I think I made fish too extreme."

Heh, that's why every fort should begin with copious amounts of alcohol!

Make a channel into your fort and put a grate up before you connect it to the water and you will have "safe" water to work with.

Heh. My latest for is a bit of a challenge start, that is, very little in the way of supplies. Two dozen booze, some meat and turtles, a handful of seeds, and not much else. It's also located along a desert river.

Anyway, upon embark, my hunter (I chose a hunter over a metalsmith due to the scarcity of food, and though I know there's magma, it'll be a while before I get to doing anything with it. I think I made the right choice.) IMMEDIATELY squeezes off a round at a group of hippos that was WAY too close for comfort. It was a heart shot, and it scattered the rest of the hippos. Very cool way to start a fort.

My question is, how did he make fish so aggressive when giant tigers run away from dwarves?

Edited for clarity: As in, what mechanism? What tags? They don't appear to have any special ones...

Yeah I started on an evil major river and everything was going good, until I notice the river was FULL of blood..... I was like WTF! what happened.  I check the unit list and there's a PAGE of dead beak dogs....eaten by carp...I was frightened and very glad I was 3z levels above the river.

get a few marksdwarves and install a floodgate-ed pit-like area.  open floodgate, fish come in, close floodgate, water dries up and marksdwarves get their practice  ;)

In real life, you eat fish.  In Dwarf Fortress, fish eat you!

In real life, you drink water. In DF, dwarves drink alcohol.

Fish and hippos? That's interesting; the very last thing I did in Adventurer mode before reading this was jump in a river and go swimming, up and down the river at first, and then into other rivers, fighting enormous masses of fish and hippos. I also saw a few carp drown in the water.

It was quite awesome. The river was so densely populated with fish that my weapon skill was actually increasing faster than my swimming skill.

I once embarked on a haunted river. I figured I'd be safe just by avoiding it, but no; the SKELETAL CARP and zombie hippos climbed OUT OF THE WATER and stomped/chewed my dwarves entirely away in about thirty seconds. O_o

I tried a different location later, and got a more tenable starting location, seperated by cliffs from all the water; the river had both undead and regular fish and hippos, and they got into a huge battle right away. There was a while where the entirety of the MAJOR RIVER was red; the undead won, unfortunately, but I had to abandon because four waterfalls and about twenty pages of undead fish gave me a framerate of about 15. =(
