Title: Are sun berries still in the game?
Post by: AngleWyrm on November 17, 2010, 11:06:20 pm
I've played a few forts over the last month or two, and haven't seen Sun Berries in a long time. Has anyone with a recent version seen the elves bring sun berries?

It was in 30.16, but yes, I had them recently.  They're only available in certain biomes, though.  If you want an embark with them, use the same embark I did on the world I uploaded to DFFD a while back:  http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=3321

Sunberries were very plentiful.  I was even farming them.

EDIT:  Err, shouldn't you have posted this in the Gameplay Questions forum?  I have so many tabs open I didn't really notice where you asked this...

I can confirm seeing them in 31.16 as well. They must be rare, though, because I only remember seeing them because I had never done so before.

Sun berries only grow in Good regions, and a typical worldgen won't have very many of them - unless you embark in a Good region, your only source of sun berries is the Elves. If you are particularly unlucky, your world might only have a few tiny Good regions and they might be far away from your closest Elven civ, meaning they'll never bring them for trade. My current fortress is like this - the Elves don't have sun berries, and neither the Elves nor the Humans have access to whip vines.

My last world, I has tons of sun berries, but no one had any pig tail. There wasn't even pig tail clothes. It was depressing, I had to rely on leather and metal, for those things. Was horrible.

Rope Reeds > Pig Tails. Four seasons of growth means you can annihilate a comparable farm's output by switching over. I like my underground crops, but for plant cloth, the humble rope reed is simply superior.

I had Sunberries in a farm in .17, but that's only the second for that's ever had them. Quietust is correct about why they're rare.

I would go with you, but I the damn elves, and humans, just wouldn't bring me any rope reed seeds, I had to get an army of herbalist running around, and I don't even remember if that worked. I know there was rope reed, ala the clothes, but I couldn't get any. Twas quite annoying, everything else was perfect though.

Got them in my current 31.18 game, delivered by the elves.  I'm in a Mirthful biome but unsure if they're here (only did a little herbalism)

You know you can find them underground, right? There are tons of shrubs down there.

Yeah, I was looking. It seemed they just didn't exist in my world for some reason. I was trying very hard to get them. In fact the only underground tree I could find was blood thorn.
