Title: Dwarves Still Haul to Depot after Trading
Post by: Disruptive Idiot on December 02, 2006, 08:08:00 am
If any items are marked to be taken to the depot, and the caravan leaves without the items being taken there, they still are marked to be hauled and the dwarves do so, except then they haul them back >_<

Since there aren't any merchants at the depot, you can't unmark them, so you have to wait it out.

Edit: They actually get stuck in the depot until the next caravan arrives.

All right, this should be straigtforward to fix.

Actually, I think this is kind of a plus, because my dwarves can never get all the goods moved by the time the caravan leaves, but they keep moving them and they're ready to be traded next caravan.

A solution would be to allow moving of trade goods while merchants are not around.

Edit: Silly typo =)

While merchants are not around?  If so, I agree, I'd like that feature.

I like moving things to the depot because it's kind of like a free stockpile.  If I were able to move things to the depot when merchants were not around, that'd clear up immense amounts of space for crafts and stuff in my in-fortress stockpiles.  But I dunno, maybe Toady considers that an exploit?

Yeah, that's the reason I'm not for just putting in depot movement at all times.  There needs to be a counterbalance if you can just put everything in a 5x5 space.

Well... perhaps the whole idea of hauling items to the depot before trading them can be done away with.  The menu that is used to mark for hauling, change to mark for trading.  Then let you make deals with the merchants right away.  Once you've made a deal, the dwarves start hauling.  It's only unrealistic because the merchant can't appraise your goods, but if you make promises... Of course, you don't get their items until you've brought everything.

This way, it's one less event for the user.  They can just mark for trade, set up a deal right away, and then forget about it.  Unless their shipment gets interrupted by a siege or a flood ;p

That or set a limit on what can be stored at the depot, and open it up to hauling anytime.

Yeah, having a capacity might be interesting, although having multiple depots would require the merchants to think more about how they pick up their goods, which is prone to difficulties.  I like having the merchants see the goods, especially for the elf scenarios, and it would be more complicated to have them flip out after the deal is already finalized and you bring the purchased goods, but perhaps it'll have to work out more like that.

Going with the each-depot-can-only-hold-so-uch-stuff idea, maybe make it so that all the trade depots have to be connected to one another (as in built right next to each other), then allow the traders to treat the entire trade depot complex as one giant building for picking up items.

Just a thought.

They could also bring servants that just haul things around for them I guess.

You could make it so any individual merchant can only see stuff in the depot they're in, and merchants spread out among available depots, so you trade with each merchant individually, which would solve this problem.

Or make trade depots modular structures, with stables for mules/horses, places to park carts, and places to store trade goods. Perhaps even places for the traders and their guards to rest, eat, and so on, with higher quality facilities for the traders attracting more caravans with higher quality goods, or just plain old travelers who stop buy to buy some food and drink and then move on.
