Is this a bug or something? The dwarven caravan came and went like they alwasy do. But no immigrants came just before winter. This is still the first year and I only have the original 7 dwarves the Metalsmith and her brother I presume since they are not listed as a spouse.

Immigration doesn't always happen before winter. It almost always happens in the spring though.
-
Yes I know but this is the first winter of the fortress isn't there suppose to be a wave of immigrants before the first winter of every fort?
-
No, not necessarily.
-
I guess not I just recieved a wave of 18 dwarves in the late spring instead...
-
Did you build any beds before winter? I'm wondering if that has something to do with it.
-
To the bed comment..how? I had 30 beds ready with rooms available... Is it possible that the wave of immigrants wont come if the year is 1053 even though it is a new fortress? I find it wierd since i had this same fotress played all the way to the lava river. I had to start over due to the fact my computer shut off for some strange and annoyingly unknown resean...

In my current fortress, I'm on a treeless map and I didn't build any beds until summer 3, and I didn't get a fall migration in year 1 or 2 despite getting 20+ each spring. A different player on a treeless map mentioned no fall migration in a different thread. Maybe it's just a coincidence.
-
From my experiences, it has to do with the climate. On temperate/tropical maps I often get more than one migration per year. But on cold/scorching maps I almost never do. Knowing Toady, it's probably some huge complicated formula.

Ah, interesting. This is a freezing map (tundra). I haven't tried a scorching map for any length of time yet.
