Title: Tasty drinks while sick.
Post by: SHAD0Wdump on January 08, 2011, 10:53:08 am
Yeah, I'm sick, and personally I'd like something to drink that won't either make me upchuck, or will react with the mucus in the back of my throat(like soda does), and isn't just water.

I'll still drink plenty of water mind you, but I like tasty drinks.

Now please... I want some serious advice. No deadly substances, no alchohol(just below the legal limit here anyway), no primordial ooze, no alien goo, no bodily substances(yes that includes milk and the silly sort of things), and damnit simply no bad advice, you are dealing with a sick man don't be an ass and make him vomit some more!

See that? I at least try to keep a somewhat humorous tone.

Oh, and I've tried lemonade just for the sake of it, could work but I don't know if it'll bite me later if I consume more.

Tea. I enjoy it in general, but it's very nice and un-cloggy when you're sick.

Tea... I never tried tea...

Chances are I won't be able to get anything better than green, is there any other nationally offered types available?(USA)
Or should I go with that as it might be the best choice?

Cupasoup, or whatever Yankee brands you have, I always drink the stuff when I'm sick.

Juice, many many kinds.
Rosehip soup (good stuff).
Black tea, I'm sure they sell some.
Green tea, either warm or iced.
Coffee.

V8 would probably be good for your immune system but I'd think it would make you puke if you're sick to your stomach.

Some lemon-y tea variant would probably be the best if you're feeling clogged (lemon camomile comes to mind), but honestly, drinking something warm and hot alone that doesn't just taste like water will do wonders.

Well, tea and soup seem to be the order of the day.

Thanks for the input. And go ahead and keep the suggestions coming, I'm sure there are plenty of sick people around this time of year who could use it.

I like apple juice when I'm ill. It's quite contracting really, with the throat hurting you wouldn't generally want anything acidic back there, but the sugary goodness is too much to resist. It doesn't help your throat or your condition in general, but I've always been a sucker for it, and if you're looking for something else than just plain water...

It probably won't do much to help you get better, but I find that Sprite has weird properties when it comes to sick people. It certainly seems to make throwing up less likely whenever that's a posibility, and it does indeed remain tasty even while you are sick. Then again, you said soda reacted with the mucus in your throat, so I can give no promises on this.

Tea is very good for when I'm sick and generally makes me feel alot better, and with types of tea umm just the normal kind? Sorry I'm English so dont know what you yanks have :D we just have normal tea here never heard of green tea O.o. But also cause tea is just water and the leaf stuff you can then put sugar or milk in in depending on how your feeling, if your quite ill and sicky I suggest black tea (no milk) and no sugar.

Real men drink Reed's Extra Ginger Brew.
I'm also going to recommend Emergen-C.

Don't drink that.  It's full of tomatoes and very acidic, which many people have trouble with even when they're feeling well.

When I'm sick, I usually drink tea full of chopped up raw garlic, lemon, and honey.  The garlic might be too much for your stomach if you're feeling so ill, though =/

Boil water, put in cup, put in chopped up raw garlic, add some honey and lemon to taste (it actually tastes much worse if you're heavy on the honey).  Stir a little.

I drink/eat it all, with a spoon if necessary.

Would sugar work too?
Title: Re: Tasty drinks while sick.
Post by: Vector on January 08, 2011, 03:52:32 pm
I really don't like sugar in this tea, but I also don't drink honey in my chai, either.

Honey helps with sore throats and diseases, whereas sugar actually causes inflammation.  For medicinal purposes, you'd better have honey, but if you can't get any I guess sugar could work.

Depends what you're ill with.  Herbal teas I would recommend, but not the rubbish fruit ones that taste of nothing.

Hot ginger tea - take some ground ginger, honey, lemon juice and add to boiling water, stir.  Great for preventing nausea.  Add a tiny drop or 2 of chilli if you're sniffly to help burn out what ails you.

Sweet Fennel tea - can buy nettle and sweet fennel teabags, make double strong (2 bags) and add a generous amount of honey or sugar - tastes like licqourice

Hibiscus and Rosehip - again you should be able ot buy it ready mixed - again needs lots of sugar.  Make it extra strong.  Great for all sorts of illnesses.

Ginger beer - again, great for nausea and the bubbles are refreshing

As for galric, yeah that is very good for you.  If raw garlic is too much, take a whole bulb, chip of the top 1cm, but bulb in tin foil with a thick slice of lemon and cook until garlic is softened.  Pop cooked cloves out and eat with lashings of good olive oil and soft bread.

I was waiting for someone to say Ginger Ale.

That's been the stock "you're sick, drink this" beverage in my family for generations.

Add a little dry or whatever toast to that, and it will get you on the mend even if you have the pukies.

I only find Ginger Ale "ok" when I'm feeling normal. But when I'm feeling under the weather it's amazing.

The ginger flavor is pretty tame in ginger ale compared to most of its other uses. The closest I can compare it to is like Sprite, only not as sweet and a little tangier.

Old Jamaican ginger beer is my tipple of choice, ginger wise.  I find the sort of ginger ales that are provided in pubs here - the little bottles for mixing with whiskey - to be a bit bland

It's that blandness and neutrality we've always attributed to making it a good drink for upset stomachs. Fizzy, mostly flavorless, with just a hint of ginger so it's not like drinking soda water.

It's also the preferred drink of his Neutralness.

Ginger ale is the best for nausea.  I've been taking stomach-turning painkillers all week, and every time I feel sick I have a glass of the stuff.  It works!

Tea with honey is great for the throat, chamomile, lemon, ginger and peppermint are my favorites.  Juice is good, but you may want to mix anything citrus with water so it isn't too acidic.

Tea is great when I'm sick. I don't necessarily mean black tea, I mean all kinds of things. Chai can be stimulating if you need that, and mint-based teas are refreshing (a hot drink made out of mint can feel really nice if you've got something going on in your respiratory tract or other head apertures. There are so many damn drinks people make out of plants, there's something for every occasion, and drinking a hot beverage in general is soothing.

My personal favorite drink when I'm sick is hot peach tea (or an herbal infusion for you purist types) with a small amount of Crystal Light or similar lemonade mix (add while stirring until you can't see through your tea anymore) and then a teaspoon of agave or honey. Incidentally, this is also my favorite drink when I'm not sick.

When I've been throwing up, my personal choice has always been sports drinks like Gatorade. They tend to be incredibly bland, non-acidic and easy on the stomach. They don't gum up my throat mucus like soft drinks do, and I find the flavoring helps me keep it down when plain water is making me gag. Good for fighting dehydration, which is a concern with vomiting.

I mean, I wouldn't call them tasty. I can't stand them any time when I'm not sick. But they've saved my stomach many a time.

If you just have a sore throat, an herbal tea can be nice and soothing. I tend to try to avoid caffeine since generally the best thing you can do when sick is sleep as much as possible.

Yeah, I used to gargle with it/use it on my wounds, but then I heard that it apparently can cause some serious scarring problems along with burning like hell.

So I don't use it anymore, except in particularly necessary occasions.

It can also fuck up your teeth, for entirely obvious reasons.  Especially if you have preexisting cavities.

I want to say that it's just too harsh to use commonly, and there's not much reason to do it. However, I'd like to see information on H2O2 dissolving enamel, as I've never heard of that before. I can see it causing irritation to soft tissue, but I don't see why it would dissolve enamel of all things, or for that matter, dissolve much that water can't. I'm doing some cursory reading on this, and it seems that peroxide-based whitening agents don't really have an effect on the structural properties of teeth, and a hydrogen peroxide mouth rinse is certainly weaker than that (about 1.5% concentration). Hell, maybe that was your part of your problem; you're supposed to dilute the stuff, and you didn't. That, and using that stuff every day probably caused a bit of irritation to your mouth.

Seriously, I've never heard of H2O2 as being a very useful solvent. I swear you're thinking of some other substance.

Seriously, I've never heard of H2O2 as being a very useful solvent. I swear you're thinking of some other substance.

Hydrogen Peroxide is a great solvent because it can act as both a powerful oxidizing and weak reduction agent. It naturally dissociates, but if it can take another substance with it, it'll gladly do that. It doesn't dissolve substances in the same way water does, it tears apart the substance, then the torn apart substance is dissolved. It works like Nitric acid, except it can also act as a reducing agent.

Because of this it is also extremely toxic to just about anything in humans. I thought the H2O2 mouthwash was a joke until people started talking about 3% concentrations. :D

I agree with G-Flex. Low concentrations of oxygenated water shouldn't be bad for your teeth. It ought to neutralize acidicic pHs (thus decreasing calcium solubility) (edit: HAHAHA, disregard that), and kill the bacteria causing them. I'd still advise not to overdo it,  but because of concerns for the soft tissues in the mouth, rather than the teeth themselves.

Hydrogen Peroxide is not "oxygenated water". Oxygenated water is water with O2 dissolved in it. H2O2 is not water at all.

You sure about this? I'm pretty sure H2O2 is neutral in itself. However, some bleaching solutions in general are acidic.

Well, I know it's an oxidizing agent, but I don't consider it to be a "solvent" in the normal sense if it's actually initiating a chemical change (aside from disassociating ions and that sort of thing) in the substance it's dissolving.

I've never heard this before, and that's a rather strange and misleading term for it. If people call it that, though, then that's not exactly my decision.

Quote
Yes, I'm sure. Hydrogen peroxide is quite basic

I don't see how that's even possible, given what I know of acid/base chemistry and what H2O2 is. If anything, I'd think it should be slightly acidic.

From what little I can find on the subject, it seems that the pH varies depending on concentration, and is generally somewhat acidic. All references to "alkaline hydrogen peroxide" I can really find seem to suggest that it refers to an alkaline solution containing it (for instance, a solution also containing NaOH).
Title: Re: Tasty drinks while sick.
Post by: Miggy on January 12, 2011, 04:23:31 am
I would think hydrogen peroxide is perfectly neutral in itself. When it dissociates it turns into water and oxygen (2 H_2O_2 => 2H_2O + O_2). Might be why people refer to it as oxygenated water? I'll admit I've never heard the term myself, but I'm not natively english either.

It should be noted though that it acts as a base when oxidizing, and as an acid when reducing, so that might be where the variety in pH comes from. It depends on what you mix it with.
Title: Re: Tasty drinks while sick.
Post by: ChairmanPoo on January 12, 2011, 04:33:02 am
I stand corrected. A search for "Hydrogen peroxide's pH"  reports it being weakly acidicic.
Title: Re: Tasty drinks while sick.
Post by: G-Flex on January 12, 2011, 04:47:53 am
It certainly does have odd properties, and the acidic properties of it do seem fairly variable (even water is a little odd in that respect), and it does seem to act differently on things when it's in an acidic vs. an alkaline solution.

I suggest a hot drink (heats up your throat and should expand it's size a bit, it also seems to work well with dealing with mucus).

My drink of choice whilst sick is hot chocolate.

Or are we discussing hydrogen peroxide, now? Use that if you want to bleach your hair!

Re: H202

Don't. Just.....don't. I grew up with two scientists, one a chemist, so I've been fed some pretty non-standard stuff in my time. H202 is not safe, even if it doesn't do a lot of damage in low concentrations. Anything you pour on an open wound that actually cooks the flesh is not something you want to put in your mouth.

I swear, when did chemicals become a substitute for doing something the normal way regularly?

"I hate brushing my teeth, but a 2% concentration of sulfuric acid does the trick!"

I was wrong about H2O2 pH, but I stand by my original comment as to its safety. It is routinedly used as a an antiseptic and hemostatic agent, and yes, as mouth rinse. Just avoid abusing it.

You do realize that chemicals are abundant in toothpaste, right? :D

And yeah, sorry for driving this thread insane off-topic, but it's not every day I can actually use my on-going chemistry education to do anything outside of the education itself. :>

Well, can we agree that it's at the very least, not tasty?

I actually think it's a good thing to engage in this kind of thing, for everyone involved. For the one doing the exposition, by reviewing the stuff he gets to know it better, and potentially notice weak points he has to improve. And the ones receiving it get a free lesson on the matter. I think it's win-win

Of course. But not the "kind my chemistry teacher keeps in a clear glass jar" kind of chemicals. I see it along the same lines as "Why buy matches, just use flint over some magnesium, same diff!"

Or "throw some powdered aluminum on that rusty pole and begin shooting it with tracer bullets!"  ::)

And that everything is chemicals. People seem to have this warped idea that anything good/natural isn't "chemicals" whereas anything bad/artificial is.

H2O2 "literally cooking the flesh" (whatever that means) isn't necessarily a bad thing. First off, many things irritate your own cells for similar reasons that they are useful against microorganisms (see: alcohol). Secondly, sometimes you want to tell the damaged and dead flesh on a wound (or somewhere else) to screw off. That's where debriding agents like H2O2 come into play.

Also, while H2O2 can certainly be dangerous, keep in mind you're also diluting it a lot.

Hot chocolate is always something I drink when I am sick. Way better than bitter coffee.
