Just occurred to me that it would be a nice feature in the game if we could have a few buttons which could raise or lower the FPS during the game.
In the init file there could be 3 FPS settings you can set, and then change during game play...
It would be useful while playing the game for plenty of reason, not going to list them all.
I would assume it shouldn't be to hard to implement into the game, would make a great feature.
-
Actually I'd love to be able to tweak many of the init settings in game, even if only in an options menu and not in a running game. It's kind of a pain to have to quit the game and restart to apply settings tweaks.
-
Yeah sure that works also JanusTwoface.
Maybe some kind of console, '~' would work nice.
Type in basic commands....
set_fps 125
start_invasion (strength)
raise_water_level
lower_water_level
spawn_objects or Npcs
remove_npc
We are suppose to be testers in the game, having some commands such as these to work with would be nice. It would be very beneficial for finding bugs in the games and testing things out.
-
especially given how long it takes to offload the data
-
start_invasion (strength)
raise_water_level
lower_water_level
spawn_objects or Npcs
remove_npc
These sound more like debug commands than anything else. Not that debug commands wouldn't be useful, but that's a lot different from changing game settings.

We dont have to have debug commands of course, basic commands would be great. But the system would be there in case toady wanted to take the time out to add in other ones. Not to mention it would help him out debuging or testing.
Ever wonder what it would look like if you flooded a fort you were sick up by setting the water level up a little bit haha ? :D
Or just spawn some group of mega beasts to over run your fort.
Losing is fun ya know :D

I would like the ability to control a few init options in game. However the ability to spawn water or remove NPC's at whim is rubbing me the wrong way. As The-Moon stated in his post...
We are suppose to be testers in the game
How can we properly test something if we can just cheat through it? The thought of 'Oh another goblin invasion' *click 'Back to work' is completely against DF's basic principle of 'Losing is Fun'. The commands you suggested would be better for the arena then actual game play.

I don't think you understand the purpose of debug options.
Testing is much, much easier with greater amounts of control over the situation and greater feedback from the game. That's why arena mode is so great; without that sort of direct control, a lot of my own testing would have taken much, much longer, and with debug commands in-game, a lot of testing would take much less time, especially with things that aren't possible in the arena, like workshops, trading, or... well, most of the game's content, for that matter.
-
I'd also like a "reload graphics" command. Right now it requires saving, quitting, and reloading. Especially with such small graphics, one pixel can make a huge difference and it would be great to compare versions of tiles with nothing more than a few button presses.
-
I recall Baughn recently saying something about trying to get DF to be able to restart its graphic engine without restarting the game entirely, for the purposes of choosing/auto-selecting print modes. That definitely seems like it would allow for changes to tilesets mid-game as well, assuming any of this gets implemented.

I really would like to see one of the standard type console in Dwarf Fortress, the kind where you press the '~', and a window comes down and acts as a console.
DF would benefit greatly from this. With or Without "Cheating" Options, they can always be removed later.
Toady, what are your thoughts on this, would you have the time to implement this, or would it just be wasted time on your part?
If you can find the time to make some basic simple console that would be much appreciated.

I'm sure Toady reads the suggestions, but I doubt he responds.

I'm a modder, It's my hobby to stretch the game to the point of steaming out of it's ears.
Perhaps you don't understand basic human psychology. If it exists, exploit it for your own personal gain. I'm not saying this is bad, but if you can control when NPC's come and go people will be using that to cheat for the rest of DF's existence. Now if there was say, add these to an improved arena-type mode with all these controls? I'd gladly support it. But a 'Tilde Time!' cheat for removing invasions or increase your dwindling supply of water is against the very nature of dwarf fortress, which is easily seen through the big green letters in the help menu.

Truth be told, the arena mode could use more for us testers. But that's the arena mode, is a playground to do things we can't do in fortress mode like spawning creatures and seeing how masses of cats do when introduced to varying amounts of magma.

I completely understand where your coming from IT 000
But well, using the "cheat" options, are not being forced on you, that for you to chose to do or not. No one is forcing you to use them.
I wouldn't like using them either unless i wanted to test something out. Because when you cheat, the game becomes less fun.
But it would just alone still be nice to have a pull down console with some basic commands we can input to do things, would you not agree?
Maybe even a "Save_Game" option also, so no more exiting and reentering the game.
"Save_Game 'Game_name' "
Would be nice if we could save the game to a different folder, rather then having to backup stuff manually.
Lots of fun things we can do with a console, without cheats.
Another example, when toady and if toady, starts adding in lighting effects. We could easily change the setting from the console, without having to leave the game and re enter and such like that.

Quick save wouldn't be too much faster...
I'm not sure about the cheating rational either. Seems like people already do whatever they want in the raws...
