I loathe the things and they won't disappear. Now I've found a few ways to get rid of them but practicality demands that I don't build a giant network of (magma) plumbing and douse all of my food (repeatedly). Cats and Dwarves won't catch 'em, and my Dwarves keep getting bad thoughts from them. So does anyone know how to get rid of the bloody things short of modding them out?
-
Cats. LOTS OF CATS. And maybe get an animal capturer to use animal traps to catch flies. All mine does is catch rats and squirrels....
-
Make sure any food you have is stored in a container of some sort. Make a large refuse stockpile outside.
Fyi, cats and traps will not help at all.
-
I've tried it. I breed the things to the point where I need to slaughter 'em every 4 minutes to keep the fps up. I've been looking around and it seems flies are the exception to the rule of rodents, they don't seem to get caught. I just looked into the RAWS which show that they avoid traps and they're slower than dwarves. But if they are getting killed and captured, where are their remains? I've never seen any. Any ideas on this matter?
edit: Seems I took too long writing this...

Yeah, cats don't kill flies.

My best suggestion is to put your refuse stockpile and food stockpile away from everything else. You might try metal barrels too, I understand they are less vulnerable to vermin and might cut down on flies. No idea how clay or stone would work, or even if metal will help.
Or you hope Toady does a plant sponsorship drive and request Venus fly-traps. :P
-
Flies can't penetrate barrels at all, so it doesn't matter what things are made out of. If you were trying to protect stuff from rhino lizards or demon rats then it'd be a different case.
-
Hmm...*Rubs chin thoughtfully* Good point. And moving the food and booze is always a good decision.
-
You could just remove flies from the raws. Or replace flies with demon rats....
-
Good idea. I'm truly considering it, although they are a good
reason excuse for plumbing :).
edit:There we go

Don't forget acorn flies. They tend to be a nuisance too.
-
Yeah, cats don't kill flies.
A question: would flying cat (or other creature that [HUNTS_VERMIN]) kill flies?
-
No.

Corridors full of doors linked to a Repeater.
IIRC, Vermin is killed by closing doors.
Oh yeah, Doors are jammed by items btw.

And closing doors don't kill vermin. I've had elaborate water logic arrays full of mechanically activated doors opening and closing routinely, with lungfish crawling all over and around the whole thing. The lungfish weren't harmed, and the doors weren't jammed open by the live lungfish (although a lungfish corpse would have jammed doors open)

Yes, flies are very very annoying (and so reflect real life...)
Looked this up on search a few days ago actually, but all results were about how far dwarves/goblins/babies/cats can fly under the right circumstances...
All food in containers sounds good, but if you've got barrel issues, or are trying to keep the prepared meals out of containers, then it doesn't work.
Does the distance of the food from the fort entrance make any difference? I've seen flies in the lower caverns sometimes, but they usually aren't my main concerns then...
