Title: My adventurer's descent into the depths (SPOILERS)
Post by: Cocoprimate on March 08, 2011, 11:41:04 pm
It's a very long read. However, I think this is a very cool story, and is proof of the possibilities this game offers. So if you have some time, give it a try.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I have this adventurer, a dwarf swordsman, called Aban Diamondtowns. He's a legend.

He has killed, by himself, all of the megabeasts in his world. This includes around 7 dragons, 3 hydras, 5 bronze colossi, and so on. Regrettably, there's one dragon he can't kill, one that went zombie. When they meet (twice so far) when Aban slices its head, the dragon just vanishes, and the kill is not counted and it eventually re appears. Aban considers this dragon his personal nemesis.

He has racked up more than a thousand notable kills, including the elf druid, princess and king, whose heads he keeps in the lair he adopted and redecorated for himself. Which, it should be mentioned, is filled with barrels of booze and dragon meat and offal.

Eventually, I got bored of kicking ass with Aban. It was too easy because he was nigh-invincible, and he already had achieved all the glory he possibly could.

So I retired him in a peaceful hamlet, and started making forts around in the same world. In one of them, Aban was so revered, that an artifact silver short sword, called Othorvush "The Erased Heat", was made in his honor. It's not too fancy, just a silver short sword with an image of Aban Diamondtown the Charms of Society on it. I at least think the name is fitting, due to his habit of killing dragons, "erasing their heat" so to speak. Still, he doesn't use it, because it's made of silver, and silver swords suck.

But in another fort, while searching for the blue metal, the dwarves found a curious underground structure. "What can I do with this?" I wondered. I could have invaded the demonic fortress with the militia, but they were too weak and wouldn't last long.

And then it struck me. There was only one being worthy enough of claiming the legendary adamantine weapon that rested in the deep. Only one so powerful as to challenge the hordes of the netherworld in single combat, and actually stand a chance. Only one had achieved so much, that the only path to further glory, laid in dying a glorious, heroic death, while battling the forces of Hell in solitude. So I had my dwarves build a stairway to the first level of the Fortress, abandoned it, and visited the site with Aban.

Aban, his trusty +adamantine short sword+ at the ready, entered the domain of the unholy with caution. There wasn't much on the first three levels of the Fortress, just some random zombified critters that fell with no effort on his side.

Finally, he then reached the upright adamantine sword. It stood there, silently, hundreds or even thousands of feet deep, in all its majestic beauty, emitting a faint blueish glow. The greed that ran through his dwarven veins overcame Aban, and he reached for it, claiming it, and at the same opening a portal to Hell itself. Of course, he laughed manically and began his descent again.

What followed was level after level of Aban fighting varied demons, and pretty much slaughtering them with his new masterwork weapon. After a while I learned which demons were weak (snow demons), which were dangerous, and which were very dangerous (damn you three-eyed monsters...). Aban passed through many levels. Some were plain, others took the form of labyrinthine corridors, others (the worst) consisted of just thin strips of floating floor, where, had Aban dodged to the side in battle, he would have fallen to his death.

Eventually, after what I think were about 40 z levels of descent if you started counting from the upright weapon, and after leaving about a hundred dead demons in his wake, Aban started to feel the effects of battle. One of his shoulders was badly damaged, and he was tired and had lost a lot of blood. A thought then crossed his mind. "I can't perish here. Who is going to kill all the elves! and the kobolds!". And so, he mustered resolve for what seemed impossible. He would return to the surface, even if it mean facing a hundred more demons in the 40 z level climb to the top of the Fortress.

About twenty levels in, I reached on of those levels where you have no space to dodge, and it was crawling with demons. I was pretty sure this was the end for Aban, as he would surely dodge or be knocked down into the abyss. I was ok with it, it was the best death he could possibly have. But then, I received some extremely unexpected assistance, from extremely unexpected beings.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Yes, your eyes are fine. Those are pigeons, deep in Hell, battling demons. One on one.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As you can see in the above picture, the Eagles, no doubt inspired by the tremendous courage of their tiny pigeon brethren, decided to join the carnage. And though all of the birds involved in the fighting died, they fought bravely and well, and many a demon met its end at their claws, harassed into falling down the abyss by the flying heroes. They succesfully held back the demon horde for a crucial moment, allowing Aban Diamondtowns, now forever humbled by their sacrifice, to leave that dangerous z level and escape to the surface.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That's one of the top levels. By then, Aban was safe. Still, the lone pidgeon stood guard, prepared to die in glorious, hopeless combat.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That's Aban killing some random demon.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That's the total demon kill count of Aban's adventure in hell. It's the sword that opened the portal too.

Suffice to say, the first thing Aban did once he reached his hideout, was build a small shrine in honor of the fallen birds. To do this, he devoted one of the masterwork bronze statues the colossi give you when they die, and he put below the bones of a fallen pigeon, as well as a severed head of every demon race he encountered in the deep. He prays there daily, and likes to think that the world, aware of how much Aban had given, had sent him assistance when he most needed it.

So, is this game awesome or what?

Perhaps when random pits open to the surface the birds get sucked in while they are flying or nesting.

Also, awesome story.

Wow, those are some courageous birds. Just imagine flocks of tiny birds going down on terrible beings of hell to enrage them and throw off balance into pits...

The only explanation I have is that killing so many elves your dwarf learned their power to speak with nature, and called birds after him, maybe even without understanding it.

Yep, steel dwarf. It doesn't really matter that much anyway.

What allowed the dwarf to survive was his stats, skills (legendary+several in fighter, dodger, misc. user, swordsdwarf, shield user, armor user, wrestler) and his equipment (full adamantine set, save for the shoulders which I never seem to get covered). This dwarf has soloed dragons, hydras, and even bronze colossi.

This is a non-issue anyway. During the trek in hell, after surviving several fights with demons in which the dwarf was outnumbered (at times even 10 to 1, during which he just kept dodging and blocking), some of the demons got in hits in the shoulders causing severe damage (spent a long time fearing nerve damage), and some even bypassed the armor in the legs and feet.

After that, most times I tried to hit a demon, instead of oneshotting them like at the beginning, it just cut them and torn muscle, causing non lethal damage. So the dwarf was most definitely going to die (because I couldn't kill them as effectively or as fast anymore), were it not for the birds that allowed me to escape without engaging any more demons. They held them off at the pits and allowed me to reach through the stairs and into demon free zones. I still bumped into some which were left over from the descent, but those coming from below couldn't follow fast enough, and so I got to escape, thanks to the feathered ones.

Reminds me of this one Illithid adventurer I had.
I was just traveling, when I was ambushed (yet again) by bandits.
I was in the process of teaching them why you don't mess with living gods, when I figured I was bored with the fight.
There just wasn't enough challenge in it.
So, abusing a glitch that just happened to come along at the right time, i teleported through many, many Z-Levels to the dark caverns beneath the earth.
It was there that I decided I would go out fighting demons.
Not very long story short, I fought my way through a few Z-Levels before succumbing to my wounds in some dark corner.

The sad part, is that thinking that I would be able to get another adventurer as powerful and awesome as Aban, I erased the save and the DF version that held it to upgrade to .25. I've tried to train up another merciless demon killer but after a dozen meatshields, no luck, they just die mid-training due to being flinged 100 tiles by a bronze colossus or something.

..yeah.. and even some stories from peasant-nothing-special adventurers can be awesome. I remember playing Goblin and got ambushed by some troll. I couldn't hurt him really and was unable to run, cos' he kept trampling me over. I thought "bye Smunstu EvilTrumpet (or something close)", but the battle wasn't over thanks to two enraged Honey Badger's.. heheh they bite his eyes out, and messed up his fingers! I don't really need to add that it's not hard to crack troll's skull, when he gives in to the pain :D

     I LOVE THIS GAME!

I must bump this. The world must hear of Aban the Adventurer. They must know of his deeds.

I'm glad someone decided to bump it :) . Aban was great. He was what ultimately got me hooked to the game. I mean, he was a legend in the true sense of the word. In the forts, a third of the statues made would be of Aban, either striking triumphant poses, or slaying dragons and elves and the such. Same with engravings. He was like a super-hero to those dwarves. A weaponsmith even made an artifact silver sword with an engraving of him, which I then picked up with Aban, and used to kill special targets.

Aban had his own secret base in the woods that I had made for him, out of some night creature's lair. It had chests, cabinets, barrels of food and booze, table with chairs, a bed, and a small space reserved for the altar to the birds, decorated with the heads of notable fallen enemies, such as elven nobles or dragons. I eventually lost that save when I upgraded DF versions, only to immediately regret it. I've tried making other adventurers like him, but I think he was irreplaceable, as even the world he killed elves in was sort of unique in its composition.

I had an +adamantine mail shirt+, IIRC. It's just that I think that wasn't enough protection against the demons to guarantee invulnerability against their attacks. It was the most vulnerable spot, and it got repeatedly hit and bruised until someone made it bleed, and it was all downhill from there, as Aban's ability to fight sharply decreased with that wounded shoulder. So much so that I started to head out of hell and climbing to the surface, eventually achieving said goal only because of the help of the birds.

I'm pretty positive that if it weren't for them I would have fallen to my death in those levels in hell that are made out of narrow walkways overlooking the abyss, as the demons had the nasty habit of charging and making you fall.

*jaw hits ground with a very loud CLANG* *bolts jaw back into place*

This story is truly amazing. If I were Aban, I would see the Eagles as a blessing, as I am Native American.

Get Three-toe to read this and see if He'll publish it on the Three-toe's Stories section of Bay12Games.com.

You don't have to delete one version of DF to get the next. Name the first one something like "DF v(whatever version #)" To do so, right click on the big orange DF, select "Properties", go to the first tab in the screen, click the name box, and type in what I've lain out. Download the next version, and do the same. That way, you won't get too horribly confused about which version you're using.

It's a terrible pity that you deleted the save with Aban. If it were possible, he should have been crowned by his civ's Monarch and become the king of his nation. In times of war, when a goblin civ besieged their capital, Aban would call upon his troops and lead a mighty Crusade against the gobbos. The Great Crusade of Aban Diamondtowns the Charms of Society, it should be called.

But otherwise, here's what I think:
This is a masterwork story. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. On the item is an image of Aban Diamondtowns the Charms of Society surrounded by demons in dragon bone. Aban Diamondtowns is slaying the demons. The image is a reference to Aban Diamondtown's journey to the Underworld in the early-mid-late season in whatever-the-year-was. This item menaces with spikes of awesomeness. It is encircled with bands of dragon bone. This object is adorned with hanging rings of demon bone.

I'll try and make a Human, Vamarian, Dwarven, or even High Elven adventurer adventurer in v0.31.24 with the Civ Forge and Wanderer's Friend mods to try and beat Aban's power (probably not likely, as I tend to get killed within 2-3 game days of adventuring). A regular Elven adventurer doing this seems... uncouth to most, but would be an impossibly amazing feat, esp. if the elf found Adamantine weapons and armour to take to his advantage.

I know. I had to delete it because of lack of space in my hard drive. After so many in game years and forts, that folder was pretty massive, and when the new DF came along, it all had to go to make room for it.

I can't say I don't regret it, but after that, I really don't know what I would have done with Aban. I remember killing an animal and making a bow from the bones, and then setting out to scour the world to hunt as many different animals as I could. I would take the skull as a souvenir for Aban's skull collection, and the meat to drop inside the lair's cauldron (sometimes night creature lairs get cauldrons/mortars, etc).

Good luck forging your own adventurer! My advice to you is to create a world larger than the "small" setting, and with as many civs and beasts as possible. Train on wildlife near your starting town until you're strong enough, and then spam surroundings on some civilian until you get the location to a dragon's lair, for example. Then go slay the dragon and feed on its meat. Don't forget to lick the blood coating on the sword for extra protein.

I love how the randomness affects your gameplay. Turning it into epic stories or making you rip off your own hair.

That is why I love DF  :D

E-mail him somehow.

I would take the skull as a souvenir for Aban's skull collection, and the meat to drop inside the lair's cauldron (sometimes night creature lairs get cauldrons/mortars, etc).
They usually do. Every time I've gone to go and kill a night beast, I've always seen a cauldron, a table, a quern, and a set of copper meat cleavers, slicing knives, carving knives, boning knives, and carving forks. I'd keep the skulls and put them in chests that I bought.

I'll need that luck.

I usually create 'Large' worlds, though they take FOREVER to get to the year I want them to.

Are multiple night beast lairs and shrines good enough?

If I kill any animal... I butcher it and pick up the edible bits.

About the blood... I sometimes fill my water-skin or flask with creature blood (even my own!) if I have no source of water nearby.

I use advanced world gen, and use 40 or so civs and 52 types of night beasts and demons.

I've fiddled with my reactions for my smelter and ironworks. I could spew out Adamantine, Steel, and Mithril at fifteen bars per use. I could then make an Adamantine long sword, Steel falchion, a full set of Steel plate, Steel war axe, Adamantine battle axe, Steel hand axe, a Steel cross-bow and shitloads of Adamantine bolts.

Or, I could just go all-out on the addy armor. Take a long sword, war axe, full addy plate set, and (for extra kicks on a civ I decide to wage war on) an addy skullcracker.

OR, Full addy plate set, steel falchion, addy long sword, steel axe, silver skullcracker, and all sorts of other weapons I like.

Knowing his skill yet also his weaknesses - being that he was not as strong as the dwarves of legend (who were sadly wiped out.) he set foot in the mile long tunnel breaching the earth.

On his way he found tons and tons of cavern monsters (Gremlins, Crundles, Elk Birds, Rutherers...) and had to slay them all except for those birds. That could not be said about his allies, whittled down to a man from the savage horrors, who then bled to death by a tiny bite in the finger...  :'(

Alone,without anyone to high-five for the safe descent and too weary to head back to the surface he trudged on. Finally coming upon the air-tight room. Levers were pulled, gears were turned and the bridge dropped, letting only him in. For safety measures if he wouldn't make it out alive, he pulled the other lever, sealing him inside.

What was left to say was that he saw a fortress of pure black rock.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The denizens were not too happy to see him and came upon him in a torrent of vengeance.

Slow, lumbering vengeance...

Undead, too many years down there. Easy prey. Some floors down and he came upon the blade. Realizing his goal was at hand he pulled it from its pedestal, the floor gave way.

Curiosity overcame him and now with a new blade in hand he descended into the depths, or the deeper depths so to speak.

Nothing but floors of rotting undead.

Until he spotted a Black demon hiding behind a stairwell, it and only it saw him. It seemed easy being a one-on-one fight. One difference was just in size, both contestants were well muscled and ready to fight to the death.

The other was that the demon could breathe dust...  :-\

And freezing vapors.

And boiling steam...

(Thats Genesis for you.)

From the upper stairwell they fought, the elf retreating back to avoid the heavy clouds rising from the demon.

Running back to the upper levels with nary a scratch he remembered the tale of Aban Diamondtowns and his feats, where oh where were his allies?! Surely the forest must have heard his call! He was only talented in the sword and proficient in his defense, how crazy was he to come down and try to get what was not meant for the world to see?

Well, he was here and they were not. He had only one chance at this, he turned around and said:

"Cursed be ye foul demon, I carry the blade that sealed you here and I shall do so again!"

All that replied was laughter, mocking deep laughter. It echoed through the halls and filled his head. Dizzyness overcame him for a moment, a moment the demon used to boost himself using his dust towards the helpless elf all the while breathing his deathly mixture of heat and cold.

The only thing the elf could think of was blaspheming the demon, indicated by a universal gesture using his hand. It somehow worked and that was what caught the demon's attention. It made a grab for it using its wing and the elf swung his blade in return.

It missed its mark by a few inches, glancing off the scaled hide. A quick turn of the blade and it hit right into the abdomen, cutting the guts.

The demon realized its folly and brought out its inner rage, it couldn't die after being imprisoned down in this pit, sharing the same room and breathing space with others just like him. He wouldn't stand another second down here!

But it was too late, its rage blinded its attacks and the elf took the initiative to leap on its back, avoiding the clouds of death from its sacs and cut off its head in one fell swoop.

"Not a scratch...would you believe that."

He put the body and head into his wolf backpack and snuck away, unharmed and unhurt. Straining to carry his pack with him.

~~~~~
And in my honest opinion, you had a lot more fun than me mate, I only got one of them before needing a retreat. I saw too many down there, zebras with their skin turned out, banshees made of steam dripping venom, thornbill brutes and their deadly muscles...
There is always more, lucky I got one... With an elf  :D
Anyways, thanks for sharing your descent story. It would be cool if other people who had adventurers descend to hell shared their stories here too.
Regarding yours, I have to say, I'm a bit surprised at your choice of adventurer. An elf? from the woods? lurking around the caverns, going deeper and deeper and then into hell? That was never going to end well, so kudos to you for embarking on this almost always suicidal quest with one of the puny tree-lovers.
Also, how badass was the elf skills-wise? Because if he was legendary in any weapon skill, I think you should have at least tried to kill a few more demons, descend a few more z-levels. You may have erred on the side of caution when leaving at your first kill, with a demon's head in the bag.
I wanted to see prove that even an elf could brave the deep and survive, I got more than what I wanted. The aid I got were 10 humans, who all died to various creatures in the caverns (who were inhabiting my 1x1 tunnels...). I was saved by the dwarven armor specially made for whomever claimed it first.
I guess I can connect his survival to his attributes and inner speed along with the armor (which didn't seem to help against the & though).
The battle. (She was on me the whole time, and only now did I realize my typo.)
I (hope I) will survive, even if that means coming out with nothing more than a head and body.
For weapons and armour, I will make a small 2x2 fort specifically for weapon- and armour-crafting. I will make a Blast Furnace, a Smelter, a Primitive Forge, a Finishing Forge, and a Metalsmith's Forge. The Blast furnace will make the steel required to enter the Underworld. Then, my Smelter will make Adamantine for weapons against the unholy horde, and coke for fuel. The Primitive Forge will make the silver for a Skullcracker. My Finishing Forge will make Wrought Iron for ammunition. The Metalsmith's Forge is necessary to process the raw metal into useable equipment.
The coke then is combined with the adamantine to make ultra-sharp longswords, daggers and impossibly strong shields and armour. The Steel will be used to make backup weapons such as falchions, shortswords, and raven's beaks. The Silver is the best material to make a skullcracker to drive the Demon's skulls through their brains (if any). Wrought Iron will be used to make a crossbow and a huge amount of ammunition. Mithril or Levisium may be used instead of Steel or Adamantine for weapons and armour.
The fort will be placed on an abandoned night beast's lair. Lots of fresh food and drink will be brought from the Mountain-Homes. Extra time will be taken to prepare extra furniture, such as a bed and chair. The chests for storing extra loot will be hand-crafted. Because filling a water-skin fills it up to an insane amount (1800), I will make a barrel and put that extra water into the barrel. One barrel of water should last about 4 or 5 months compared to a single barrel of alcohol (25).
I will make my own backpacks for some other possessions from butchering my hunting kills.
Yeah, but it might be better to mine for the adamantine, so you can find a demon fortress.
Not all sites have a Demon Fortress. In fact, I've heard that there is only one Demon Fortress per 16x16 embark tile, max.
It's a pocket world, though, so I apologize if I violated your requirements.
ANYWAYS, I've just killed a Horror of Twilight, with only himself, a cauldron, a quern, a mortar and pestle, and a table. No tools, no sapient butchering byproducts, only what it said on the tin. It's an uncomfortably clean lair. Perhaps moving to that mountain titan's lair might be worthwhile. That world is in the Titan's age name, too, so once I kill it and move in, I can go and brag about my kill and find other Megabeast dwellings.
The mountain lair is also only a few miles (adventure log map tiles) away from the Horror of Twilight's lair, but it's probably a good bit upwards.
My guy is an outsider who is probably an Adept Knife User wielding a copper scorpion dagger, but once I melt down a steel breastplate, I can forge a Large Steel Dagger from the raw materials. I killed a giant lion who killed animals of other civs, butchered him, made his skin to a backpack, and picked up his meat, bones, and his skull. I got ambushed by several wolves in two packs, too. I killed them, butchered them, picked up the edible bits (just the meat for the second, not the organs) and the bones. I plan on carving the single bones from the legs into spear handles and the clusters of bones into blow-darts or arrow-heads. Then, I'll live off the land.
The birds were sent from Armok to aid his loyal servant  :P
Stories like that make me wish for one thing to finally come into realization.
That eventually in adventure mode you will be able to make your adventurer create a group or a civilization that he could rule over. A badasses such as this guy deserve it!
By the way how exactly did you take control over him once you retired him?
My own adventurer had a more foolhardy and permanent way to get down to the depths.
Namely, she jumped into an adamantine shaft.  Somehow, she survived with no real injuries.  so now she's basically wandering around killing demons trying to avoid being overwhelmed (they aren't going specifically after her, so it's more like killing very, very deadly animals).
I'm really glad people seem to like this story and appreciate what a badass Aban was. He simply had no shits to give.
I've half a mind to put it to writing in a more story-like form, as this one is pretty much an out of character recollection of events, which still works, I guess. I deeply regret having deleted the save, as I could have posted pictures of his physical description, his stat page, his hideout in the woods, his collection of heads, and so forth.
It would have been incredible. Aban of course would've taken a pigeon striking a demon as a banner, or symbol or whatever the game calls them, and swept the elven lands until no more pointy ears remained to hear the laughter of his dwarven warriors.
I'm going to make a non-cheating fort, on a Large world, using Lofn's Wanderer mod. I fiddled a bit with it to make chests, daggers from metal/bone, and other such things. I shall raise fame and gather an army. Then, off to kill the Sand-people I go!
It would be awesome to see Aban in the Hall of Legends!
In case anyone is willing to nominate it (since nomination of your own stuff is considered bad form) here's the synopsis:
Aban Diamondtowns the Charms of Society, legendary dwarven warrior-hero, descends into the depths of the world, where he is kept from certain death by unlikely saviors.
This is the Hall of Legends link.
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=89305.0 (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=89305.0)
It would be better to have it stickied, since the thread keeps getting revived all the time, but I don't think it's customary to do that in the adventure mode discussion forum. Either way, I'd be delighted to see an adventurer of mine immortalized there.
Thanks Tiruin!
Now, it would be great if some of the people who enjoyed this tale voted for Aban. We need 6 votes.
By the way, I don't know how to delete one's own post. You can modify it to leave it blank, but other than that, no idea.
I'm not 100 percent sure, but I think that once you start a new fortress the demons may respawn. And in any case, they keep spawning in adventure mode as you kill them. I killed like 150 with Aban and they kept coming in large numbers, so they probably (virtually) never end.
What you can do however is colonize it in DF mode, a dozen legendary axedwarves in steel armor should be more than enough, in my experience. Provided the syndromes are not that fatal.
better off adding dozen legendary axedemons and spread them around the fort for extra protection, or just make a fortress, use dfmode to (save)swap to a peasant and send them on a journey to find this legendary warrior, bring him back, use Dfmode again to switch back to the site then dig down to hell.
-SNIPE-
Woah, ignore that. No idea where I was at the time.
Although having read the story, I have to say this is pretty freaking awesome, and I hope for a chance to emulate you in all but three ways: I will wield no standard weaponry, and there probably won't be any birds to save my stupidly overzealous hide. I will also be fighting in either civie clothes or naked, with no shields...
