Title: Genesis Mod Succession Game
Post by: pieisgoo on April 11, 2011, 09:00:22 pm
Recently I've come across Deon's fantastic Genesis Mod. It includes an extrenly large amount of things like new races and 9 dwarven castes. As I started playing it I realized that the mod would make for an amazing succession game! Also here's a link to the Genesis mod topic for so you can downlad it and see all the new features.http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=52988.0 (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=52988.0)
One thing that you should know is that the ACSII tileset isn't ready yet so I'm using the Phoebus tileset in the meantime.

Rules

Turn Order

Embark Site
Before I choose and embark site I want to know where everyone would like us to embark. Just post in the thread and tell me your embark preferences and I'll try to find something that suits everyone. Also I modded out Aquifers because I hate dealing with them.

We'll start when we've chosen an embark site and at least 4 people have signed up.

ME ME ME OH MY GOD

[edit] Now that I've posted... ♥

I am pretty ambivalent to embark sites, actually! In my own games I tend to have a preference for Savage or Evil sites of any grade (I had one Terrifying fort where for the first year everyone died except two dwarves, and I ran it with that skeleton crew until my first wave of poor fools migrants), but I'm not sure exactly how much Fun that would make for a succession game (this is my first ever!), or if that degree of Fun is actually desirable.

HOW DO YOU MOD OUT AQUIFERS, OH MY GOD I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER

I want in, but I am rather new, and have never done anything like this, so I have no idea how to get the saves/upload them after my turn is up.

Put the region folder into a .zip or .rar file or something similar, then upload it to: dffd.wimbli.com (http://dffd.wimbli.com)

Dorf me as a shroom dwarf please! Job doesn't matter, but please make it a male smith of some kind.
As for site, tropical forests. Preferably with high savagery so we can get them dragon raptors and giant felines.  :D

Also, why can't we use Ironhand? Isn't the current Phoebus kind of buggy? Or are we using the unofficial update from Phoebus himself? If not, is tetrahedrite fixed? Is anthracite in? OH GOD SO MANY QUESTIONS

I'm interested in participating in this. Though when you upload the save I'd suggest uploading the entire thing, save, game, and all. Fewer chances of something borking that way. Also mod it so that dwarves can make masks. I'm also wondering if we should wait for the next version of Genesis though... Should be soon right?

Yeah, and Deon said it's gonna be the "final" version. You guys should wait, IMHO.

Wait or not I wanna play toooooooo!!!!

So yeah count me in :)

EDIT: Deon said the next version should be up in "propably 1-2 days" so I think we should wait for that. Also the idea about uploading the entire game when switching is a good one, should help avoid any weirdness or bugs.

Oh and something savage as surroundings please... (although I'm a bit scared about the undead, I have no experience handling them.) :D

I guess we'll wait for the new version. Also as for embark site I've always wanted to embark on an evil desert. You guys up for that?

By the way, my first participation in a succession game if be. :D

Sounds good to me, just make it a savage evil desert :D
Giant desert scorpions are awesome.

Lets just try not to have too much fun, would be nice if the fort survived for a while and would have all sorts of cool stuff built :)

How do I zip the folder? Never really done this before, so sorry for the qestions.

Got some further wishes for the embark, lots of minerals and flux if possible, would be nice to get a steel industry going but if no flux I suppose we could go places with just iron (magma-safe)
And it's more funzies with different minerals ;)

How do I zip the folder? Never really done this before, so sorry for the qestions.

Atleast for winrar you propably have the options for "add to archive..." and "add to [folder name].rar" in your right-click menu in windows explorer, if not open winrar and find the folder you want to archive and press Add from the menu. If you need more help, google, there should be some clear step by step instructions somewhere (propably on the official site).

i would like to join

this would however be my first succession and my second fort

i would like a spot with lots of ore
the evil desert seems like a good idea if there is no fighting there is no fun.

i am going to download the mod to get used to it
i also use the phoebus title pack

Now that we seem to have decided on desert, what kind of desert would you guys want to embark in? Personaly I was leaning toward a rocky wasteland myself.
Title: Re: Genesis Mod Succession Game
Post by: Daff on April 12, 2011, 03:09:56 pm
Any kind would be fine with me, I suppose having atleast some sand for glassworks would be nice, but other than that I think there isn't much of a difference.

Okay guys, wait a day, tomorrow I will release a quick patch adding and fixing the latest discussed stuff in the thread, so it will be good. I will also add placeholder reactions so whenever I release another update I will use them and this fort will be compatible with the new upcoming patches this way.

Deon you're awesome :D

Be carefull I might become a fangirl if you keep this up :D (ignoring the fact that I am male :P)

And can't wait for the fort to start, I've never played a succession fort but it should be fun, a bit variety to the regular DF gameplay. Should make the game a bit more interesting thanks to multiple people with different ways of operating.
Title: Re: Genesis Mod Succession Game
Post by: Deon on April 12, 2011, 04:26:42 pm
All my succession/community forts died of stagnation since I tend to lose attention to games from time to time (I can't play the same thing more than a few days) and I also constantly have something important to do, so I hope this one lives (and it has a lot of daring people and Asfghn, so I really hope it will happen :P).
Title: Re: Genesis Mod Succession Game
Post by: Daff on April 12, 2011, 04:34:00 pm
"...people and Asfghn..." :D

I think it'll be fun, a year is a pretty short time to implement any large changes so anything a single player does will propably be interesting and it'll take some real effort to get anything big built, this in turn should lead to some interesting solutions.

But yeah I really hope this fort will stay alive for a while and that we'll get all sorts of stuff done in there :)

Giant desert scorpions are native to savage deserts and they can be tamed so... ;)

Wait, so what turn am I?

Savage desert, YES. Also, are we removing all the _EXOTIC from the raws to stop the DM bug thing?

EDIT: Derp. See, this is what I get for coming on here sick and tired. Anyway, yay sucsession game!
Title: Re: Genesis Mod Succession Game
Post by: Daff on April 12, 2011, 07:22:03 pm
I believe those are all removed by default in genesis and the dungeon master is an appointable noble.

According to the list in the original post you are number 4

EDIT: Also I'd like if we had all 3 cavern layers for maximum funzies!
Title: Re: Genesis Mod Succession Game
Post by: Deon on April 13, 2011, 12:06:04 am
Yep, the dungeon master is just a noble for "flavor" if you want one (he does all the same, like, smelts stuff and doesn't tame animals because there's a bug :P). All the pets are not exotic to allow them to be tamed.

I'm making Sylvan elves a bit more evil so all of you who likes to kill elves should feel joy.

my heart ♥

but then I admitted long ago to being a Deon fangirl so

AHEM. On topic: Oh man, desert with a brook sounds AWESOME—won't be insurmountable since we can still make pots for booze. 8D

But I agree, savagery is DEFINITELY a must. (because I'm suicidal! whee!)
Title: Re: Genesis Mod Succession Game
Post by: SirAaronIII on April 13, 2011, 05:53:28 pm
Evil AND savage? That's kind of intense. Zombie/Skele Scorpions aren't tamable, so I think we should get either only savage or only evil.
Title: Re: Genesis Mod Succession Game
Post by: asfghn on April 13, 2011, 06:30:27 pm
SirAaron: Oh, I thought the majority vote was for high savagery, I didn't think I saw anything about evil... silly me, I fail at skimming. :P

I agree though, while an evil/savage map would be !!challenging!!, we do want the fort to actually survive (at least for a while). So one or the other, and I am up for either!
Title: Re: Genesis Mod Succession Game
Post by: pieisgoo on April 13, 2011, 06:46:54 pm
Now that I think about it, I kinda agree. We should probably only do evil OR savage. What would you guys prefer? I'm fine either way.

Your name made me literally lol.

But I~ vote... uh, evil, why not? 'Twill make it more difficult to hunt and such, what with everything being made out of bones or rotting flesh. 8D

I'm making Sylvan elves a bit more evil so all of you who likes to kill elves should feel joy.
yessssssssss

Sorry for asking so many question about the embark site. Don't worry, I only have one more question. What size embark do you want? Because I'm first, I doubt I'll run into any FPS troubles so I don't really care but the people with later turns might run into problems if the site is to big. How large do you guys want it?

Also yeah we're going with evil desert. Mainly because that means that the animals in the caverns can also be undead and that will be FUN!

My computer is sadly on the obsolete side of things, but it can definitely handle 4x4, so I'll just throw in with the majority vote. :D

(Trivia: Initially that was mistyped as 44x44.  :o )

No need to weep, no update yet :P. If you check the thread, I'm in an updating fever right now.

I've already redesigned workshops, changed Keeper entity (so they don't crash the game), added alchemical workshops, reorganized all workshops and started to add new alchemical reactions (and added 50 placeholder reactions for the future updates).
I've also added rock weapon crafting to the stonecutter's workshop (former rock grinder).

The update will be ready today when I will have no more strength to continue :P.

Aaaand it's out.

A suggestion: upload the whole game folder instead of just a save, this way you won't mix graphical versions.

YESSSSSSSSSSSS

Personally, I was planning on doing my update in the format of screenshots+story (I've been rereading Boatmurdered, so I can get the right kind of tone 8)).

I mean, with all the death hilarity of Genesis, can we really record it as anything else but murderously hilariously in-character? :D

One problem, I might not be able to update til tommorow. For some reason when I found a good embark site the game refused to let me embark there. I had to delete the world and it took forever to find a good site. I'll try to have it up soon I promise. Sorry for the wait.

I've got a suggestion: since pieisgoo has been AWOL for several days—and if he isn't back by, say, Friday—why don't we tack him on to the end(?) of the list and as the next in line I'll start the game? I'd have to make a new thread so I could keep the OP updated and interesting, but it's an alternative to drumming our heels forever. ;)

I did start a new thread. Not the same embark but similar enough, methinks.
