Hello all,
I wrote a piano arrangement of the Dwarf Fortress theme about a week ago for the Gemclod Let's Play (http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3349669). I did a bit of googling to see if it had been done before and the answer was no, not really. Though there did seem to be some interest so I've signed up on the forums here to share. Hope you like it.

You can use OGG files to mod the music into the game. You'll have to rename the files song_game and song_title first though, I think.
Feel free to ask any questions, leave comments etc., your feedback is most appreciated.
-
I'll be the first to say that it's a really good one, and deffo worth a listen!
-
Sounds better than the original, I like it!
-
Definetly changes the feel when you change the instrument.
So going to use that sheet music to lay down some mad musical mix.
-
Wow. The piano really turns the DF theme into a pretty haunting tune.
-
I never dreamed this song would sound so good played on the piano. Fantastic work!
-
Occoris
heheheh. ;)
I love this arrangement and I loved all your other work for Gemclod as well. Fantastic!
-
Wow, this is really impressive and awesome!
-
Great work! I think this would make a great addition to Soundsense as well.
-
Like!
-
I don't think 1:25 to 1:35 fits on piano. It sounds fitting otherwise.
-
Wow, this is pretty awesome!
-
Wow, that's a VERY big difference from the guitar version, I love it!
-
It fits in well with moments of great peril.

I look forward to hearing that!
I love this arrangement and I loved all your other work for Gemclod as well. Fantastic!
Thanks! Anyone who hasn't read Gemclod should check it out before the thread gets put into the SA archives. I'm not sure what's going on with the archiving process but it's not going to be put in the LPArchive site with Boatmurdered, Headshoots and Syrupleaf (other SA Dwarf Fortress Let's Plays, I dunno how well known they are around here except for the first one).
-
What did you make the sheet music with?
-
Finale.
-
read Gemclod and man sucks that those guys couldn't retire the forts when they had the chance.
-
I love pianos.
I love Dwarf Fortress' theme.
However, you sir. Have taken a seemingly light hearted, yet fast and complex theme tune...
And turned it into a dark, chilling reprise, that would send shudders down the spines of all but Armok.
... And to think, all this by playing it a bit slower on a piano instead of a guitar.
This is fantastic and I'll certainly be using it in game now and then.
But to the great Toady One; what on earth are you doing working on Dwarf Fortress? You should be writing more music. (Ho ho ho)
-
Where is the like button? :D
-
I prefer the guitar version, but still pretty cool.
-
Wow.
This is few kinds of awesome. Sorry guitar version - not gonna listen to you anymore! *replaces file*
-
You gotta submit it to this website. Inspire more remixes/instrumentals.
http://ocremix.org/ (http://ocremix.org/)
This would be awesome Adventure Mode music. Fortress Mode has guitar, Adventure Mode has piano. At least, the theme seems more fitting for Adventure Mode.
EDIT:
Did a search for DF on the huge list of games. Not to be found. Looks like this track can be the start of it there.

I've been waiting for a DF remix to be submitted. I'd say this is worthy of a submission.

I think adventure mode would have the guitar. Fortress mode would start with the piano, then add more instruments as more migrants arrived. By the time you had around 200 dorfs, the theme would be played by a full symphony orchestra!

Nice site. Submissions are limited to 8MB though, so at 9.75MB the audio file's a tad long. Of course, if anyone wants to submit something of theirs based off of what I've done I have no objections. The files I listed in the OP can be used for anything anyone likes, no permission required. But let us hear what you've made ('cos that's cool and exciting - for me anyway).

Well, it does go through the whole song twice. You could just submit an edited version.

For a moment I have glimpsed what Dwarf fortress might be when it is finished.

"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents... some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new Dark Age."

Thanks for the Sheet Music upload. As some other guy said it would be interesting to see what would happen if the instrument was changed. Therefore I might do an accordion cover.
Also, I love the playing instruction "Dwarvenly". Fits the piece quite well
-
Therefore I might do an accordion cover.
:o
That... actually sounds awesome. Be sure to upload it if you do!
-
I shall, I'm not sure that it should be too hard, I mean its only really one hand and accordion left hand is as easy as pie. So I shall try to make something decent. I shouldnt like to dishonour such a marvelous piece of music

That sounds wonderful, I look forward to that. I've bandied off an edited version to this ocremix site though I wouldn't be surprised if they rejected it. I don't know anything about remixing and I'm too poor to buy any of the software.
-
you should do the title song in this manner
.....
anyone with the know-how able to do a full orchestra version perhaps? Would it be possible?
-
Such magic, the DF theme is beautiful on piano. It reminds me a little of the works of Bach. Toady is such a masterful composer, I am in awe of he's talents. And that is not even beginning to sing praise for the pianist who realised such a piece, and with such amazing skill bought this dream of Industry and Booze into reality.
Happy now.
-
OMGGGG!!! THIS IS MADAFAKANGAMAZINGGGGG!!!!!!!@!$%
*Screams incomprehensibly in mind due to sheer awesomeness*
-ahem-
Excuse me for the extreme outburst of emotion.
This piece nearly made me cry too.
Just too beautiful for words.
It's also pretty interesting to see how things change when you speed up the tempo by 50% on audacity.
Makes the song quite a bit jumpier.
-
Wow, thank you. I'm listening to this again right now. There do seem to be a couple spots that don't quite work, but the vast majority is great.
-
The audio file is produced by a computer program, correct?
If any of you records a real life version of this arrangement played on a real piano, I would love to hear it, and it should definitely be posted on the forum.
Not that the existing files are not good - quite the contrary! But they (as computer generated instruments usually are) are lacking a bit in dynamics and expressiveness. A performance of this piece by a competent pianist would be a fantastic thing indeed.
-
I also really liked how you instructed the player to play "dwarvenly" :) Will have to give this a shot on my piano when I get home, it looks like a fun song to play.
-
So I was listening to all the midi tracks, and suddenly one comes up that was so full of win I instantly had to maximise my music player to know it's name.
'Tree killer', for the name, is mesmeric.
-
This is my next great project, my Megaproject. I've always wanted to learn how to play the dwarf fortress theme on piano, and now it's all here, I'll just have to reall buckle down and learn this. Once it's done and i can play is competantly I'll attempt to upload it.
I just finished learning Gerudo valley and end up playing that all day, so now i want to learn this!
E: arrrrgh!!! I just noticed the download link for the sheet music is a .rar file, and I absolutely hate .rar files, and can never get them to work not with 7zip or any other bogus.
Could someone please turn that into a normal file(whatever normal may be)? I really don't want to copy/paste the images into paint then print it :/

I guess the difference in sound is inevitable, since different instruments are used. It's like the classical piece Asturias by Isaac Albeniz. Originally written for piano, it was transcribed for guitar by Francisco Tarrega and became more famous in that form.

Sorry for going off-topic. I'm just making a comparison.

I've got to head for a college interview very soon so I'll respond to the new posts later. Until then, here's another contribution I made to Gemclod that may or may not be of interest to this forum.

Extremely cool. Is it possible to make the "Play Piano" reaction cause happy thoughts in nearby dwarves? If so, that would be amazing.
Urist McDepressed has been content lately. He heard the sultry tones of a legendary pianist recently.

Yep, I'm unable to play the piece on my dinky little keyboard (and I don't have any recording equipment anyway). I'm pleased that so many people are interested in playing the piece on real pianos.

Maybe.
-
I don't know anything about remixing and I'm too poor to buy any of the software.
???
So what did you compose this with?
-
The audio files are generated from the software I used to notate the music, so it's a completely original exercise. Remixing (as far as I'm defining it here) involves editing actual audio files for the most part which is something I only have grasped the basics of.
-
I started taking piano lessons last year and Im now up to playing the easier Chopin preludes. If I can handle that, I think Ill have a go at this piece, at least parts of it, and see how far I go. I thank you for doing this :)
What works or not works btw - you can probably get around some of the more "hard spots" with some interpretation or by replacing some of the more "eloquent" finger picking passages with some solid chords, maybe.
Gee, now I know what to do when I get enough for the day of playing Dwarf Fortress. Ill just go sit at the piano and play ... Dwarf Fortress :) And if that gets boring, sit at the !!!PIANO!! playing...
-

Nice to see you here, Sir... eh... Occoris. ;)
The first time I heard the Gemclod team it sounded like a cacophony (is it me, or is it a bit of dissonance in there?) but now I love it and I can't get enough.
Oh and +1 for Tree killer. I find myself humming that one every now and then. It's my favourite one, right there with the Madness and Shock.
-
Sirocco was already taken! >:(
And yeah, there's a lot of dissonance used to flesh out some harmony, but also because the theme itself uses a lot of dissonance implicitly.
e: Explicitly too.
-
Oh my god, I just saw the download was 70 mb! :o
All I want is the sheet music, but apparently I need to buy the whole car to get the tire :c. Can anybody help out?

Wow. The piano really turns the DF theme into a pretty haunting tune.
My thoughts exactly, it sounds beautiful and dark and mysterious on piano in a way I would have never imagined. Great job, Occoris/Sirocco!
-
Just wondering how can one print the scores above for playing on a piano?
What's confusing me is that all pictures are of different size. Tried Acrobat to merge them, but it creates its own page for each one :(
Adding all pictures to a document in Word worked somewhat, but pages still have different length - some are half-empty.
-
My friend and I have been planning to do a piano/violin duet for a while now, but we hadn't picked the song. I think I know exactly what song(s) we'll do :D thank you for this o3o

Nicely done Sirroco. You just went from epic to armoklike with this! Love your stories and now your music too!
-

Awesome again.
-
Wow, Toady's stuff sounds way better on the piano. He's like an inverse Albéniz.
Congratulations on making this happen, Sirocco.
Also, the .pdf throws the idea into my head of a full book of DF music.
-
Wow, Toady's stuff sounds way better on the piano.
I wouldn't say that. It's mostly way more haven't-listened-to-death.
-

I haven't listened the guitar version to death either. I've always turned it off and played more varied music instead. I maintain that the piano version is way better.
-
Fantastic. I have to say, I love the theme music for DF. One of my big hopes for future releases is that Toady makes some more of the same.
-
I agree; it sounds much more fancy on piano.
Toady should trade it out, actually...
-
I always had the theme to be something unfittingly (or not) dark for DF. The piano version confirms this. It's so beautiful. It fits with the tragicalness that a fortress can inspire.
-
I want the DF main menu theme song to be changed to what you played, shame I don't know how to do it.
-
Is there a few other people playing this with different instruments? Wind, String and perhaps Percussion would be an interesting mix of methods. Though Percussion would be quite hard :p though it would be very dwarvy...
-
I want the DF main menu theme song to be changed to what you played, shame I don't know how to do it.
There's a link in the OP to a file you can download with the .OGG files of the music included. In there you'll find an OGG file called song_titles. Replace the song_titles in your DF 'Sound' folder with that and you're sorted. You can do the same with song_game too if you like.
-
This is so awesome! Thanks Occoris
-
Sorry to go slightly OT, but is there a higher bit-rate version of the (vanilla) guitar solo of DF theme / prelude?
I have a decent hi-fi setup and the low bit-rate really rears its ugly head.
-
I don't mean to deflect from the fantastically dark sound of the piano version (thank you sirocco) but some people where asking for an orchestral version, well it exists on youtube already
Dwarf Fortress Orchestral

I would highly recommend you publish your mp3 on youtube sirocco, it has a wide audience.

Hmm. It seems to be well done enough, but I still like Sirocco's arrangement better, I reckon. This one seems a bit choppy in places and doesn't have the same melodic flow to it.

No I mean the classical acoustic guitar that the ingame original theme was played with.
-
I really like this! It does indeed change the feel.
-
This will be played at my funeral.
-
Funnily enough it was actually Sirocco or rather, his character and Tehsid's going-ons in Syrupleaf that got me into DF in the first place.
As for the theme, it's brilliant! Dark and yet hopeful...

Nice; I'd suggest that the background melody be put a little more forward to increase the coherency in the second half of that, but otherwise it's fantastic.
Small request: is it possible if you could redo the piano versions at the same tempo as how fast the pieces are played in vanilla theme music?
-
O_O
This is absolutely amazing. Mind=blown.

Yeah I'll maybe tidy it up at some point when I'm not busy. I COULD speed the dwarf fortress theme to original speed but it would sound awful.
-
Question: Possible for nomination in the Hall of Legends? We need music like this for those legends like those :D
Also, beautiful work on that Sirocco Occoris! I couldn't find a word better than beautiful in the current time, dwarfy might be it but... I'm not sure what dwarfy really is here.
-
Got a message request for a PDF version of Dwarven Prelude recently. If anyone else wants it, you can grab it here: http://www.mediafire.com/view/?yn4r9a6d5ftzbja

Sounds good, Occoris!
-
Hey does anyone know if this is on Youtube? Occoris, would/could you put it there?
I've made a youtube playlist of covers of the DF theme to listen to while playing (like electronic, orchestral etc) but this track is amazing and it'd be great to have it there along with others.
-
WOW, how awesome is this? Thanks!
-
ITS TURNS OUT EARS CAN ORGASM.
This is truly amazing; i have always loved piano music, and now i can love Piano Dwarf Fortress music.
Im modding this into my game the next chance i get, man.
Man, now i wish i knew how to play piano.
...
Hey, how do you play piano? =D
-
By the way, did I read correctly that these were composed in Finale? (I'm going to get my hands on everything you've made shortly, and then I'll just know. But for the moment I'm listening to all them Gemclod tracks just for the hey.) If so, anybody interested in building on the arrangement, printing it out, etc. could probably google "finale notepad"... Really good program as music composition software goes, by the way -- maybe not as high quality as some stuff out there, but as far as I know the best thing you can get free/cheap if you want classical composition methods instead of those funny-lookin' midi dots.
Also: this is epic, in a dark, melancholy way. Like Dwarf Fortress. Kudos!!
Also also: guys... Soundsense. Just sayin'.
ETA: Tree Killer reminds me so much of the old Dragon Warrior/Quest games I will need to listen to it a few times so I can enjoy it without the urge to crack up in fits of laughter. XDDD
It's weird, but it makes me feel at home here somehow. I mean I've always loved the forums since I discovered DF (even if half the people here are crazier than I am -- which is saying something, since I've been known to look at things and say "I could simulate that based on the mathematical patterns, with variables and options for the variations!"), but this... Nostalgia. Gentle music, happy, sad. Everyone gathering around the pianist in the evening. This is pretty durned special for what's essentially a large, loose fan club of a particularly insane computer game.
Sirocco has organized a party around the *synthesized wood piano*.
ETA2: Megaupload is telling me the feds nailed them. Is this stuff on the DFFD?
-
I've no real interest in making YouTube videos for the arrangements, if anyone else wants to use it then be my guest. I'll see what I can do about reuploading the files when the Christmas season is over.
-
Now that Megaupload has been shut down, are there any alternate sites to get the midis from?
Edit: sorry for the necro post; this is frankly just too amazing to not insist on a midi.
-
I'll be damned if I didn't forget to reupload those links. Sorry, everyone. Here's a dropbox link to a .rar file containing the midis for Dwarf Fortress and Dwarven Prelude plus PDFs of the sheet music:

If anyone wants anything else, feel free to drop me a message or post in this thread (though I'll admittedly be less likely to forget if you message me).

Very nice! Thanks for creating and posting this.

Wow, this is fantastic. I hope you had at least as much fun working on this as I did listening to it :D

I just wanted to see if the melodies played are based off of chords. It's hard to explain but I'm in the process of learning guitar and I'm finding it alot easier to just find the chords and just get the rest by ear as opposed to looking at tabs.
I was play the first part and caught:
- some sort B chord (it's the shape of b major but with some tweaks can't quite pin point them)
- an augmented A chord followed by an regular A chord
- A tweaked A minor
- A tweaked E major
I suppose I'm more interested in dissecting the style to better understand it as opposed to just memorizing the tune.
This probably just sounds like a bunch of rambling but I figure it couldn't hurt..hehe

Looks like I found my new theme-song. Well, not that I had one before, but this is perfect. :P
-
the theme on piano sounds like a whole story composed into a song. Impressive, sir.
-
I... I wish this music never stopped...
-
This has been around for a while now. I'm surprised it hasn't made its way into soundsense yet.

Might I include this piano theme as an option in MasterworkDF? I would link to it from the manual/release post. I dont think I'd inculde it by default, because of the filesize.
