Title: From whence the screams come...
Post by: Jarhyn on May 04, 2011, 03:06:19 pm
So I'm getting to the point where I wish to explore an eerily glowing pit. I have picked my vector as a delicious stick of cotton candy. Armed with a giant cave spider and noexotics, I have begun to set up a long hallway lined with cage traps covered with cave spider silk... But I'm curious exactly how many cage traps I'll need to get them all.

I know I need one silk launcher for every 6 blocks of hallway the way I'm currently doing it, and currently only have one spider (so I'll need to swap it out between launchers after each coated section).

So I'm curious if the giant cave spider can reproduce if I manage to secure a second (female) spider, and how many sections of hallway I'll need. Once I'm done capturing them all, I intend on making a giant zoo featuring one of each of the 52 varieties that my world houses, and then atom smashing the rest, then sealing off the place they came from with cotton candy flooring and/or bridges

it would take at least 100 traps, make 200 to make sure (thats why clowns destroy fps)

that's not so bad then... just need 33 sections of hallway... I'm starting to think that the hard part will be getting them into an appropriate atom smasher when I've gotten one of each. THANKS!

Also, does anyone have ideas how to engineer a wider spray to the following silk shooter? or one where the goblin "bait" can be disposed of or reused?:
x = fortification; b = bridge (raised profile); d = door (pet impassible); o = wall; g = chained goblin; s = giant cave spider; .... = floor
ooooooo
hallway is here

edit: apparently they have enough range that I can cover two sections of hallway by separating them with a fortification... what kind of range do those spiders actually HAVE?!?

Giant Cave Spiders won't reproduce without modding (even with the noexotic mod).

the top four rows represent the two hallway sections the spider will spray with silk, the bottom two rows represent the access hallway to remove/replace the spider. The G represents the goblin, d represents pet impassible doors, c represents a loaded cage trap, and then there are two levers off screen, one that's linked to the bridges to toggle the spider's spraying of silk, and another to release the goblin (who will quickly end up in a cage, so long as the bridges are up), so it can be recovered once the bridges are dropped. x represent fortifications. b represents a bridge (that raises, not retracts). all doors are set pet impassible.

Also, are chains like cages in that they'll become unbuilt once the lever is pulled? or will the chain stay there?

The chain will actually stay attached to the creature - if you check the inventory of the creature after you pull the lever, you'll see the chain in its inventory.
