Title: The Legend of Ungrashzon
Post by: Varis-Kebori on July 13, 2011, 06:36:56 am
Hallo everyone,

I'm new here and I made a film for you and for Dwarf Fortress.
But at first I like to tell something about me and the film:

I come from Germany and I'am absolving a training as a 3D-/Game-Designer in Berlin. As part of my training, I made an animation film about Dwarf Fortress and I think... I done it very well.
I already uploaded my film on Youtube. The problem comes now: I got 5 voice-actors for the film, but the dubbing is german. I added english subtitles but I would be happy, when somebody is able to give the film english voices. I can try to make a english dubbing at my scool, but I would prefer some native speeker.
I just hope my subtitles are okay now. A friend wants to read the subtitles and correct mistakes I possibly made. I hope my english is better than the google translator. ^^

Okay: Here is the link to the film:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1kBedai-rk

For the english dubbing: If anyone like to make a english version I can try to give you the film material, the translation and the original german text. I would improve and change the credits for the english version.

OK. I hope you enjoy the movie and I'm looking forward for feedback and a possibility for a english version ^^
I think we will write and have a nice day.
- Varis

Oh man. I have only the faintest of idea what's going on but god damn that was amusing.
Probably will be better with subtitles though. At least the jokes are universal enough to grasp on and get.
But yeah, the moment I saw the artstyle on this thing I knew it'd be good.

I was surprised about the lack of goblin ambush though.

WOW! That's brilliant! Awesome! It made me giggle at every scene.

I think german version with english subs is alright. For me german speech sounds more dwarfy than english one. Waiting for another episode!

I'd like English subtitles at some point so that I know what the heck is going on (I only caught maybe four or five words in the whole movie), but overall good.

The bit about aborted cats was weird, though.

Very well done. I really would like to see English subtitles, but the translation on youtube worked pretty well actually. I feel I got most of the jokes.

You deserve a !!medal!!

What "translation on youtube"?

Good morning,

I'm happy to read, that you like the film. I worked 5 to 6 weeks on this project and I'm very happy to get good feedback.

Maybe... Today I can upload a corrected version of the subtitles and then the time will tell more about the movie.
(Bad subtitles = losing is fun?) ^^

@peregarrett:
A second episode: After six weeks of box graphics I like to make some... smoother 3D-Stuff. When I like to see blocks I would eventually make a new Dwarf Fortress Film.

@dermonster:
The aboirted cat is really strange. I just think that a angry dwarf may interpret a "cat in fetal position" as... this.

@GreatWyrmGold:
What do you mean with "translation on youtube"?

OK. The films seems to make a good start. We write us and have a nice day.

That's sad.
But anyway I suggest this movie to Hall Of Legends.

Today, I thought about possible stories. Maybe... the journey to Ungrashzon or the foundation of a new fortress (I'm imaging how the leader shout: "STRIKE THE EARTH!" and the dwarfes stay around, doing nothing.)
Dwarf Fortress have so much funny stuff to make film about. Some day I would make another Dwarf Fortress film, cause it's just funny.

Utterly beautiful.

Isn't it wonderful how DF stories pretty much write themselves?  There is that sense of wonder and excitement that's slowly replaced by a feeling of inexorable doom.

The guy before me mentioned one.

To "toggle" the subtitles click on the icon below the image that looks like a list(Interactive transcript), and it will bring up english subtitles below the video. The subtitles advance and the bolded words are what are currently being said. I think this is the "translation on Youtube" Thatdude mentioned.

Wow, this is awesome!
And I like the minecraftish graphics.
Interesting how dwarves always go through doors from the side.

LOL!  Love it!

Kekse!  Das ist schleim!

So friggin' true...I learned the hard way to disable cooking alcohol.  I love how damned happy he is with his foul cookies.

Okay, I added one of these annotations to show the subtitle button. It seems that this button is quite unknown.

@Nil Eyeglazed:
I'm right there with you.

@Noodle0117:
I choosed the Minecraft Style, because I think it is the best for Dwarf Fortress.
At first I modeled the fortress. Then the dwarfes and they were to fat. So I used this mistake as joke and I remembered my first fortresses: >The main corridors had a width of one square and the dwarfes lie on themeselves to crouch through the corridors.

@Urist_McArathos:
Some day I saw a "Horse Eye Roast" and "Giant Cave Spider Brain Raost"
I think... there are more disgusting meals than cave wheat beer cookies.

True - however beer used for cooking is beer that cannot be used for drinking.  I suspect this is why the cook ended up bleeding.

I loved the deluge that comes pouring out of the door as soon as the wheel is finished.

Awesome video, and wonderful voice-work, but some of the grammar and word choices aren't quite right.  I however cannot read or speak German, and am absolutely no help besides just making educated guesses at what you wanted.

Thanks to everybody for the good feedback. I'm very happy to see, that my film is quite successfull (and meybe find a place in the hall of legends). Last week I sat with a WTF-face at the front of my monitor cause of the 300 klicks at one day.

For the people who like a second movie: I already think about a story, but you need patience. I like to make a artistic movie to improve my animation skills and to learn character design. When I finished it I would make a second DF-Movie. The positiv feedbacks motivates me. I hope I can make a second film as good as the first.

@Scaraban:
I'm just familiar enough to understand english and that other people understand what I want to say. But it's okay to mention it and I know that my english has mistakes, so I have to learn.

It was an excellent video. My only disappointment was in not seeing the cute little raccoon getting chopped to bits.

Just to point out, I think there was "plot hole" with beer cookie part. First Turin say "Where is the beer? I'm thirsty!" lead me thinking barrel is empty. Next Nirok say "No, there are no barrels."

Oh well I can just picture it already being filled up with food or seeds or something.

It's still good film.

Hahahaha, the subs really helped.

Good stuff. Mmm, beer cookies.

@Ventus: Yeah, that's difficult. I hoped that everything is clear after Olin spoke about the mushrooms in a fine beer aroma.

Thank you all for the comments and votes for the Hall of Legends.
Now I feel like my user rank (escaped lunatic), cause I made a movie you very like, without to knew what I did. (Maybe... a litte bit)
So... that's a great success for me, cause it's the first of this kind.

Now I try to calm down. Then I will think about other cool stuff to make people happy.

And now... beer cookies for everyone! XP

I know it's bad to necro, but I'm making Polish subtitles for this video. If only I can contact with VarisKebori somehow, he rarely visits his YT channel~~
