Sure, we're never gonna run out of rocks, but they didn't mind back in ye days of old.
Just think about the possibilities. You could throw goblin parts back at goblins. Throw elf giblets at elves. Throw food at the sucky migrants starving outside. Or cats that are on fire. Or barrel of booze into fire.
-
Raining burning cats onto an approaching siege would be pretty awesome.
-
I'm amazed noone mentioned the obvious.
The spinning Axelord strikes the Dragon in the lower body, bruising the liver. tearing apart the spleen and tearing apart the left kidney!
The Axelord has lodged firmly in the wound!
The dragon breathes fire!
The Dragon is relieved that he is immune to fire!
-
We'd finally have an use for those platinum craft artifacts!

And if you miss, he'll just dodge the earth.

Other catapults? Which are loaded with catapults themselves, until one final one loaded with a fluffy wambler?
-
Problem being that catapaults are buildings.
-
I do support this! The best way ever to refuse migrants!
Urist: Cog! The migrants have arrived!
Cog: Damnit! PREPARE THE CATAPULT!

Except catapults don't hurt friendlies.

he's talking about shooting the migrants from the catapults. not shooting the migrants with the catapults.

+ this would make for most interesting fortress tales
like remember the time i killed that BC with piles of dwarf puke?
-
you'll have to excuse me IT 000, i'm a cavalry man, not artillery. i'm unaware i was using incorrect terminology.
though from the image, it seems you should be quoting strange guy.
-
I only launch used goblin shoes at my foes!

No it was just a sentence I took out of context and chuckled at as I pictured it. ;)
Maybe "Not using the catapults to shoot the migrants." Because technically the catapult is a tool but both might be just as correct. I'll be the first person to say I'm no grammar expert.
-
...After rereading the quotes and ignoring the context, I have to agree: Things out of context are funny.
Now let's get back to flinging dwarves at goblins.
-
Hmmmmm...
Finally, a use for the hoards upon hoards of Rhesus Macaques in my animal stockpile!
WHAHAHAHA!
Feel the rain of thieves, you beardless bastards!

I started a thread about this a while back. The easiest way to implement it would seem to be a "designate as catapult amunition" button similar to dumping or melting. Barrels are currently unbreakable, but if they shattered on impact then venom and forgotten beast ichor would suddenly have an actual use.
This would also mesh excellently with the planned ability to designate items and tiles to be lit on fire.
-
also works with the blood barrels if you mod the blood to have contact syndromes or if you then magma the booze
-
Urist Mcoperator fires Yak cow with the catapult loaded with Yak cow head. Yak cow head hits the yak cow in the head bruising the muscle, jamming the skull through the brain and tearing the brain.
-

EXACTLY WHAT I WENT ON HERE TO SAY.

... Put enough catapults on catapults and you can put stuff into orbit. STRIKE THE SKY!
-
if this is implemented in the game kobolds will be renamed to KOBOLTS!
-
Why has no one mentioned the obvious choice for ammo? COWS! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSXOeqwbrEo&feature=related) :D
-
Stronghold 3 will have flying cows too... but no dorfs :'(

*Ahem*
The spinning axelord strikes the earth!

Would be nice if the damage formula for catapults worked based on weight and stuff. Lots of funkiness that could happen. For an even more amusing feature, stacks of items could split apart upon firing. A stack of bones would cover a hallway in wonderful macabre junk. Arrows could be a deadly alternative.
-
Um... arrow firing catapults? Aren't those just inaccurate ballistae?
Note to self: Catapults firing ballistae.

this came to mind when I was reading this thread

am I right, or am I fucking right?

whoops. I guess I missed a link. Nothing new here, move along.

That would finally give use to those barrels of blood the traders keep bringing.
"Urist, bring the barrel of kitten blood the humans 'gave us' last caravan, the elves have arrived"
"Yes Sir!!!"
-
Quite an obvious change.
Who would like to fire cats at the enemy, save+exit, mod cats, watch a nuclear explosion...
Also, firing that caged dragon, which then starts flying and spewing flames over the goblins sounds deadly.
"Sir, the elven traders are here!"
"DARNIT! LOAD THE CATAPULTS!"
"Sir, you just ordered all the spare stone to be dumped."
"I didn't tell you to use stones you hippy! Wooden catapults should fire wood and flowers... and launch the animals as well."
"Yessir!"
Elf Bowman detaches his head to let the lizard pass safely.
Elf Bowman has died.
Lizard hits tree and explodes in gore!
Elf Swordsman is stricken by melancholy!
Elf Swordsman kills Elf Bowman!
Elf Swordsman has drowned.
-The dwarves then die from the contaminated water.
Endless possibilities here, especially with breaking barrels.

Cannot approve more. This is one of the best ideas I've heard recently. Seriously, catapults should be able to fire anything, though heavier things should have shorter range.
Actually, given the upcoming syndromes and interactions this would be brilliant. Infect some prisoners/kittens with a zombie virus, then launch them at the elves. Suddenly the elves are showered with zombie-bits and start turning on each other in a flesh-eating rabble. Then just wait for them to... actually I didn't think this far ahead. Showering elves with zombie chunks just seemed a good idea.
EDIT: Even better idea if you could have a dwarven necromancer in your fort.
Get necromancer to resurrect some severed limbs
Load severed limbs into catapults
Fire at enemy
