Title: Praisegems - Natural rock fort suspended in magma.
Post by: cephalo on July 15, 2011, 06:17:53 pm
I finally finished my latest fort. I've been working on it since the day 31.25 came out, so I wanted to show it off.

Here is the link to Praisegems (http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-10563-praisegems) in the DF Map Archive. Be sure to check out the points of interest and stuff, there's a whole dwarf city down there. I'm hoping that this fort can out fav' Walledwar, my first fort. Walledwar was cool for its time, but I think this is a better fort.

Here is an overview from overseer. It's a shame that overseer can't show magma, you have to imagine the area below the lowest bridge filled with magma.

Cephalo has created Praisegems, an artifact fortress! It's encrusted with awesome, it menaces with spikes of magma! On the fort is an image of forum users. The forum users are amazed. This relates to the posting of the thread  "Praisegems - Natural rock fort suspended in magma." In the year 2011 by Cephalo.

The craftsmanship on this fort is indeed masterful. The upper levels are things of beauty to behold, and the underground town is something I would love to adventure in someday.

How many fps do you currently get?

You managed to get a queen, you didn't seal up the caverns, and your front entrance is trap free.  Most impressive.

Marvelously made, but I would want to see what would happen if you removed supports.

That looks great!

I'm curious, how did you manage to get the concentric circles looking so clean? Were they built freehand, or did you somehow calculate the outlines?

I have a link to the save in the 'Overview' PoI. I was going to do another map series of after such a disaster, with the queen dead and her artifacts like the axe, shield and blue diamond crown(with an image predicting her death.. muhahaha) placed in her tomb for my adventurer to explore. However... I need my life back after this! And in any case, the next version of DF will soon make adventuring less desireable in a 31.25 world.

That looks great!

I started by using Windows Paint, zoomed all the way in with the grid turned on. After a while though, you get a feel for making circles by freehand. If you look closely, you can see that some of them are actually less than perfect circles.

Your circles are probably much bigger though.

Niice! I'll have to remember that one when I come out of fortress retirement next year.

Hmmm, interesting. Does the macro allow for circles with non-integer diameters? If so, such a utility would have made my current project (a geometrically accurate excavated hemisphere, in which the fortress is housed) ridiculously simple. Unfortunately, the project is now done, with the entire damn thing designated by hand, so it's a moot point.

Yeah, that bottom cavern has only been breached up high. The walking creatures can't get into the fort, but a few flying ones have gotten in that way. This fort has some lingering FB problems. In fact if you load the save, in about 20 frames the floors will turn green because of the permanent nausia that so many dwarves have. I used DFHack to clean up the vomit so I could take pictures. :)

Once I lost about 15 dwarves because one of my soldiers went through the high traffic fountain with a contaminated weapon, and then everyone who walked there without shoes died. Dwarves like the mist of fountains, but they can be very dangerous when you add FB poison, even when you have tracking contaminants turned off. I now have a new de-contamination chamber outside the fort.

So any plans to use the Pick and Axe line to  "retire" the fortress instead of  Abandoning it?

You mean collapse the whole thing into the magma? Well, I thought about it, but some of the supports are actually submerged in magma. I don't think it could be done without draining the magma somewhere, which greatly diminishes the dwarfy romance of the idea.

No,  it's a trick using  DFusion and DFhack, and possibly runesmith.

Wait a minute... I'm not sure I understand. You can have the city remain alive? and switch back and forth between adventure mode and fort mode? That's pretty cool!

I'm not sure I'll have time to mess with it though. Also, the next update is going to have so many new things for adventure mode. I might wait till then for any adventuring I do. However, if anyone else wants to, there's a link to my save on the main PoI in the map archive.

Yes, you can, though I've not mastered yet.   I keep trying to make adventurer home/strongholds but i end up playing them as fortress.
