Title: Build! Explore! Loot! (Maptools freeform rpg)
Post by: Haika on August 07, 2011, 05:17:52 pm
Hey guys.

I've been toying around with the idea of using maptools to GM a game. And I'm thinking it will probably end up being sorta like Multiworld Madness over in the RTD section.

This will use Maptools 1.3.b86 from http://rptools.net/
You may also wish to make your own token with the tokentool.

Maptools server info: Name: 'Aglaia', Password: 'unekaru'
Server probably won't be online other than days we have sessions.

Hey guys, here's some basic mechanics I've been thinking about. Nothing is set in stone:

GURPS has everything.
It's boring, though, or so I've heard.

I just suggested GURPS because I've been told it's a fairly decent system for this sort of thing. I could always just make up a basic system of stats, and a d100 roll system, or use something else if people are interested.

As to being boring, well... I have plans for that as far as the story goes. I'm kinda thinking of taking my Crafting game premise and turning it into a maptools session game. With the Aglaia being a base of operations, that can be changed, built upon, and moved around. Something with a little more freedom than the pure crafting versions the forum games have.

I don't know anything about systems...but Nobilis? I have no idea though.

An idea I've had for a while is making a "DF" game with Map Tools where how people build the Fortress actually matters when it comes time to defend against goblin sieges, kobold thieves, and rampaging megabeasts. Essentially it would be a giant board game of Dwarf Fortress. I'm not sure how interesting it could be in the short-term however, since it requires a lot of mundane preparation and manual labor if one wishes to simulate the experience of our bearded friends. Individual players would have to take care of their hunger/thirst/happiness to survive (like a non-combat health bar) by exploiting their dwarf's preferences whereas the Fortress itself would have more complicated needs. Then again, a simple mining expedition to find more iron could turn into a Happy Fun Clown Party.

I'm not sure how closely this resembles your crafting game, but I'm just throwing out the idea since it's pretty much an extreme crafter's RPG. It also has the interesting side effect of creating maps which can be used with future games in a similar setting. It's a sneaky way for GMs to let their players do most of the dirty work of establishing the layout, history, and treasure for a dungeon.

Ok, I've decided I will in fact go ahead with this. And just use my own system for things( using the simple d100 roll with 50+ being success, extremes crits, and GM modifier based on difficulty. With an additional contested roll for attacks vs dodges, with the better roll succeeding).

There will be crafting! Combat! Building! NPC kidnapping/slavery! Magic! Fun of all kinds.

Those wishing to sign up, need to give me a name, age, gender, and some sort of background, it can be a simple class name, or a decently large bio. Try to keep your tech level at around medieval or Renaissance eras to start. I also need to know when is best for you to play a maptools game. Sessions will probably last 2-3 hours at least, depending on how long people want to play.

I'd like to get at least 4 people to give this a go.

Well, I've never used Maptools or played with GURPS before, but here goes:

Name: Taric
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Background: Knight

And I can play at most times, though 4-9 AM GMT I'm usually sleeping...

Maptools can be found here: http://rptools.net/ You'll want the latest version, 1.3.b86

I'm going to be attempting to set up a server, that people connect to. Then it's basically a chat room, with dice roller and some graphical board game like elements.

And I decided to go against using GURPS, and just wing it. Looking at GURPS it looks far too complicated for what I want to do.

I was thinking around 5pm EST. Maybe a little earlier or later, depending on when people are available. Maybe on Tuesdays, again if people are able that day.

So a custom ruleset then? Sounds good :D

Ok, I've set up a maptools server, if either of you are around, I'd like you to try and connect. The maptools alias I put in was Aglaia, with the player password of: unekaru.

Therefore I believe it should show up in the maptools server list. I'll stick around in here for a bit and see if people can connect to me.

Well... great. I've had issues with some maptools games requiring Hamachi to connect to an artificial LAN. I'm on a router, and that may be the issue.

I'll keep looking into it for now, but until then, would people interested be willing to download and use Hamachi for this? I don't like using it, but it may be the only way I can host a game.

Just let me activate it.
Title: Re: Fantasy Maptools RPG, signups now open!

Yeah go for it, set up a server, and give me the info. I should be able to connect to games just fine. Not sure why this won't let me host.
Title: Re: Fantasy Maptools RPG, signups now open!

Unnamed server, no password.
Title: Re: Fantasy Maptools RPG, signups now open!
Post by: Haika on August 08, 2011, 12:37:06 pm
Ok, I don't see anything named 'Unnamed' in the Maptools server list... Though I do see my Aglaia game... Unless you didn't give it a name, then I kinda need one to connect.
Title: Re: Fantasy Maptools RPG, signups now open!
Post by: Taricus on August 08, 2011, 12:46:32 pm
Yeah, I can't seem to be able to name a server...
Title: Re: Fantasy Maptools RPG, signups now open!
Post by: Haika on August 08, 2011, 12:50:31 pm
hmm, I can connect to my own game just fine using a local address, but the external one times out. Granted, I don't know if that'll work coming from the same computer.

You should be able to input a name, when you start up the server. When you click start server, there's an input for 'Rpgtools.net Alias' that's the server name.
Title: Re: Fantasy Maptools RPG, signups now open!
Post by: Taricus on August 08, 2011, 12:51:13 pm
Ah, that's what that is...

Server's name is Wallace. No password.
Title: Re: Fantasy Maptools RPG, signups now open!
Post by: Haika on August 08, 2011, 12:58:02 pm
.. Ok, simple one box click fixed the issue.

So the Aglaia server, with password: unekaru
Working now for anyone else who wishes to join.

Post by: Haika on August 12, 2011, 11:11:58 pm
ok, going to bring this back forward again. Instead of try a new thread.

I'm still interested in running something through maptools. I can probably do an evening GMT game, say Noon EST, I think that's either 6 or 7pm GMT. I'd like to have at least three players interested. I think I'll try and ask people from the crafting games to come sign up here, and see what we can do from there.

What I'd like to do, is combine my crafting game(link can be found in my sig) design, with a Dungeons and Dragon's pen and paper type element. Where there's a gather stage, that has the 'adventure' element to it, as you head out into these unknown worlds and explore for resources, and possibly deal with combat situations.

Then, I'd want to add in a build and advance type session onto the crafting stage, where you increase the Aglaia's work area, and can build places for npcs/slaves/pets to stay, sort of like building your own castle or something.

I would love to play, but I can only be on 3:30pm to 10:30pm Eastern Standard Time on weekdays, whenever on Saturday, and past 2:00pm on Sundays.

I'm a little inflexible 'cause of High School.

Meaning 3pm EST, or Noon PST. There, we shall discuss characters, mechanics, and future play times. Hopefully that allows more than just me and Taricus to sign in.

Heya guys, I hope people are ready to play again on Thursday.

I need you guys to do me a favor, and write up a list of what items your character has on him. There's really no restrictions on what you have, but you need to have a reason for anything. This mostly will be clothing, armor, weapons, and traveling supplies etc. Nothing in this list will give you bonuses to your stats, so this is mostly just fluff, and a record of what all you have. I want to get away from having any PC pull items out of their asses, just as they need them.

Mage types need to also give me a spellbook and list all the spells they have in it. I think I will put the maximum here at 15, Just give me a name, and what sort of effect it should have. Remember that damage and such is all done in the system.

This notebook was meant to map the forest, but I guess it won't hurt to write a few notes on this situation. Keep a clear head, even if the air - and the people around me - are hazy at best.
The people. Let's start with the people. The real people. The knight seems like a regular knight to me, well-trained, equally well-armed, and - as far as I know - honorable. I don't recognize the emblems or colors on his armor and shield, though. The wizard is what I'd expect in a wizard. There's obviously a lot of power in him, but I think he's a bit overconfident, tries stuff that's beyond his grasp. It's a miracle he hasn't killed himself yet. Still, he's at least as good as the guild guys back home.
Then there's half an archeologist. I've seen men like him, but only twice, and both were jesters. He looks a bit different, as if his body was meant to be that high, and he isn't just an oddity. He's very comfortable with it, too, and he looks at us as if we're 'too high' rather than the other way round. Hasn't told me a lot about himself, but I know I'd rather have him at my side in a firefight.
On to the golem. Colored glass, jewels, or crystals, I didn't dare ask him. What an idea, giving a golem a sentient mind and free will. There are laws against that, at least where I come from, and I can see why. He made the wizard half glass. Maybe he means well, at least that's what he said, but he doesn't seem to grasp that the wizard doesn't want to become like him. None of us do, I think. Also, he was off searching the corpses of our enemies while we were still fighting. Either he's not very bright, or his mind was warped in some golemy way, or he's trying to sabotage us. Either way, I don't trust him watching my back. I'll have to tell the wizard that I want him to heal me if I ever need it, and stop the golem from doing so in any way possible.
On the bright side, I managed to take one of those crystals before that greedy golem got them all. Tomorrow, I'll try to shape it. I've seen the rich guys back home use a similar glass device, they call it a spyglass, would let me see much farther. Of course, everything will look reddish if I use that crystal, but it's worth a try. I wonder if my dagger is strong enough to chip it.
Oh, right, an inventory. I should make an inventory. Have to know what I can use, and what I'll need to replenish, so I don't get any nasty surprises.

Starting with weapons.
- 1 Bow, short, recurve.
- 12 Arrows, broadhead.
- 1 Dagger, steel.
And, as my master always thought me, my fists and feet are weapons as much as anything.

Next up, clothing.
- 1 Pair of Breeches, dark brown
- 1 Hose, dark green.
- 1 Shirt, dark brown
- 1 Gown, dark green
- 1 Cape, dark brown
- 2 shoes, leather
- 1 Belt, leather, has 4 pouches
- 1 Backpack, small, leather - filled with sand since our desert trip. Would bluecapeman mind if I pour it out here?

And there's some other stuff
- 2 Rations - strange, I don't really feel hungry. Should ask the wizard about it.
- 1 Poultice, with some medicinal herbs - should stop inflammation. I hope.
- 1 Notebook - obviously
- 2 Charcoals - to write in it
- 1 Tinderbox - has enough tinder for 4 or 5 fires still. finding some straw would help.
- 1 Crystal, red, shiny, and cracked.

One of the things I'm thinking of doing is getting the impurities out, leaving a clear crystal. As well as fusing them back together.

Interested?

Fusing them together might be unnecessary, but depending on how clear they are now, getting the impurities out would be very useful... We should ask Haika about the details on the crystals thursday.

Ahh.

Actually I think the crystal should give a small body boost, but a small spirit penalty, plus a 75% chance of rejection (Body Check) after a day.

And possible to take out the day rejection shows or not.
Title: Re: Build! Explore! Loot! (Maptools freeform rpg)
Post by: Haika on August 22, 2011, 02:40:42 pm
Heh, yes Details on the crystals will require a check on Mind to investigate them. As to the Wizard being changed by it, that's just roleplay and fluff at this point. Unless his player wants to request a real 'effect' from me.

However, remember that you have the powers of an Aglaia creator. So... things like being cracked, or not having enough, is rather moot if you pass your power checks.

I will still hold the session on Thursday as planned. However, my attendance policy for this is very lax. People may come and go as they like, and I will meta/god/poof them in or out, with brief explanations each time. The more you can play, the better of course. But don't worry too much about missing a couple hours, or being late.

right, 12 hours or less until game time.

I have inventories from Eagle, and Pyro I think. Still need that from the other three, as well as a spell list from the wizard. If you all are joining us again later today.

Where do I get my inventory?
You make it up :)

Eagle has the right of it. You might also want to look around the net for an image you can make a pog or token out of. You can either download and use the tokentool application from the maptools site, or you can let us know the image when the server goes up, and I can make you a token in game then.

Not sure without looking it up. All I know is the game is set for 3pm EST. Or about 2 hours from now. I'll probably be bringing up the server in half an hour or so.

But, can she level up as well?

You may control her, but she is still 'special'. And NOT a creator. Only PC's have the powers to create and therefore only they will level up. You may be able to find out more about her, should the Aglaia travel to a world with a little more... buildings.

Is it possible to do these sessions on Fridays or Saturdays?

I'm starting school again.
Sat is about the only day I CANNOT do the game. Really it's up to the others if they are avaliable. Thursday is just what I picked and people seemed to go with it. If others have a preference, let me know. And I'll consider changing the time.

Maenads are tall and wiry, standing over 6 feet tall and typically weighing around 200 pounds, with maenad males the same height as and only marginally heavier than maenad females. They wear the dark hair on their heads long and braided (and have no hair elsewhere on their bodies.) Their skin is dusted with a peculiar sparkle, as of gem dust, giving them a striking luster in the right light. This sparkle is a natural component of their skin, which is flecked with bits of living crystal.

Maenads are a psychic race in D&D. Hence the 'crystal guy'. We could visit that world here, but it may be a bit. You've got at least 3 encounters to deal with for this current 'quest line' and there's one optional one as well for this world currently set up.

Life, even on a weird plane with all kinds of lunatics around me, can be good. As I write this, I can see the aforementioned madmen, and some slightly more normal people, toiling with wood or stone, trying to build a room for themselves. They've been busy for a long, long time now, and all that time I've just been relaxing in this hammock. Took me about five minutes to build it. As said, life can be good.

I need to find a good-looking servant girl who can serve me cocktails. That's one of the most important things missing before life is perfect.

I'd like my stat points all dumped into Spirit.

(How do modifiers work? I know it's a negative modifier if the state is below 50, and a positive if above 50, but I don't know much more than that.)
Title: Re: Build! Explore! Loot! (Maptools freeform rpg)
Post by: Haika on September 03, 2011, 05:30:54 pm
Modifiers are like so:

0-9 = -50
10-19 = -40
20-29 = -30
30-39 = -20
40-49 = -10
50-59 = Nul
60-69 = +10
70-79 = +20
80-89 = +30
90-99 = +40
100 = +50
Title: Re: Build! Explore! Loot! (Maptools freeform rpg)
Post by: PyroDesu on September 03, 2011, 06:38:12 pm
Yeah, I definitely want to dump into spirit, since that controls power rolls.

And a -30 modifier hurts.
Title: Re: Build! Explore! Loot! (Maptools freeform rpg)
Post by: EagleV on September 03, 2011, 06:46:26 pm

20-29 = -30
30-39 = -20
40-49 = -10

60-69 = +10
70-79 = +20
80-89 = +30
90-99 = +40
100 = +50

Huh? I thought 41-59 was +0 and then 31-40 would be -10, 21-30 would be -20, and so on.

Each stat can therefor be ranged from 1-100. For each 10 below 50 rounded up, you get a -10 modifier. For each 10 above 50 rounded down, it's a +10. Meaning, a skill score of 27, would cause a skill check to get a -20, and something like a force score of 86 would only give a +30.

E: I'd like three points in skill, to get it up to a solid 90, and for the other two - I'll follow CoM, and put those in spirit.
Title: Re: Build! Explore! Loot! (Maptools freeform rpg)

Makes me glad I found a way to turn a skill check action into a two force check actions, what with having a low skill but high force.
Title: Re: Build! Explore! Loot! (Maptools freeform rpg)
Post by: Haika on September 03, 2011, 08:03:26 pm
Hmm, you're right, there is a problem with the rounding up or down. I think I will go with what I have laid out here tonight. As that makes more sense and is easier for me to remember to have everything rounding down the same way. (and I think I've been rounding down in game all this time anyway, like those skeletons had 49 in something, and I was giving them -10's)
Title: Re: Build! Explore! Loot! (Maptools freeform rpg)

As far as I can see it, you can make any check into a different check with how you word it.

Quote from: Adrian's Journal
I'll need to write down every scrap of information I get. It'll give me at least a tiny chance to survive this hell, and if I don't, maybe some guy in my situation will find these notes down here, and get the hell out while he can.
I can't get out myself, not anymore. The blue guy has his eye on me, and the others seem to lose their mind - can't trust them. Maybe I'm already getting insane, too. If so, these might be the last reasonable thoughts I write down. Or maybe I just think they are - maybe I'm insane already.
But I can't dwell on that. I need to focus. Write down what I need to know when I inevitably go crazy.

First, the blue guy says he's a god. Could be, or he's a damn powerful wizard. The first can't be harmed by normal weapons, the second will have wards to protect him from those.
So, I need a weapon capable of killing a god. Maybe I can make one - I've got some crap going on in my mind that's beyond human. Still, making such a weapon is normally reserved for the most powerful gods. Or I can try to find one. It would take ages. Literally. I'd probably need thousands of years to locate such an artifact, let alone learn to use it.
It's a long shot - a very long shot - but it's my only chance to get that bastard down. And I'm not settling for less than 'getting him down'.

Second, Jera can't hear me. She doesn't answer my prayers. Or she doesn't care. Anyway, I'm on my own. I can't count on any of the others to help either, which brings us to point three:

They're all insane. The golem lets his fire bitch do a lapdance, and his warriors scoop up helms full of sand, in the middle of a frakkin' fight. The golem AND the wizard think it's a good idea to go home with a necromancer. Maybe they can ask her to come with them for tea and biscuits next time. The wizard did some awesome stuff though, maybe he's less crazy. The knight pees on a burning altar, and can't fight for crap. The dwarf has disappeared, just like that. And everyone's hitting on that kid from the desert. For crying out loud, it's a KID! I should slit the throat of the knight and the wizard for that. But they're mad. They don't control themselves.

And I have to stay calm.

I'll have to be polite to that motley-minded codpiece that calls himself joyeux. Answering him obviously didn't work, and doing the exact same thing twice, expecting different results, that is insanity. And I need every bit of sanity I can keep. So I'll have to stay calm until I can nail that hedgeborn maltworm. That might be the hardest task of all. But I'll get him. God or not, I'll get him.

*Agrees*. Also, have you happened to take a look at the Clash game in this forum? :) I elaborated on her character for that game.

Yeah, the image in the center could be better.  :-[

And, no, I haven't seen anything called "Clash" here yet.

It's a pure roleplay creative writing game... so not sure how well it'll do. But I had fun writing up more about her.

Good news and bad news:

Bad news: I have no idea how stable the connection will be Thursday. The entirety of Bay12 504ing me last night doesn't give me much hope.
Good news: My bus route has changed to exclude a subdivision, decreasing travel home time by about 10 minutes. I probably won't be late again barring technical issues.

I'll cross my fingers. Seriously, I need you against those monsters.
Unless...
If you can't connect, can I (or one of the dead guys, or Haika) control your guy for this combat only and only to fight? Pwetty pleeeeeese?
Of course, I'd understand if you say no, please don't feel pressured  ;)

And that is genius. I personally think the 'emotional bonding' in Felicia's personal story feels a bit off, but that could very well be me. And, no I can't be more helpful, sorry :)

Just wait until I have someone that can do a power check without massive penalty make a quad-prong rail cannon that will be mounted on my shoulder. Virtually infinite range, powerful as fuck-all, and only a 1 hex drift ([1d6], clockwise from the top.), if any ([1d2], 1 is drift, 2 is no drift.)! (It's a fucking railgun. NORMAL railguns fire at over Mach 10. This one has double the rails and is fired indirectly.) However, it needs a spotter with high skill, requires me to be kneeling (recoil), requires ammunition (No infinite rail spikes for me!), requires an entire combat turn to reload, a fail jams it for 2 turns, and a critical fail will still fire, but shove me into the surface of the planet quite a ways. And the round has a guarantied 5 hex drift radius. I plan to lop off one of my arms for material. I can regrow it.

Wait a minute... If I'm important to the plot right now, then I have... PLOT ARMOR! (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PlotArmor)
Not. You'll just kill me the same as the others, won't you?
Right?

There is a large chance that I won't be able to join next thursday, as I'll just get back from a 'weekend'. My apologies. If you want, you can let my char do anything (within reason ;) ) to help the party.

E:
"Go north", he said. "It will be fun", he said.
Well, apart from a pack of moles on steroids and a worm on something much stronger,... No, even then it was terrible. A day's march in the desert heat, listening to the ranting of the golem about his name - I must say, I forgot it again, he won't be happy. I'll just try to call him 'hey you there' until I remeber - anyway, a forced march trough scorching sand, listening to the aforementioned ranting, hoping this wizard won't blow himself up and us with it, and wondering when the knight will pee on something he shouldn't. Or, in the case of that kid, hit on something he shouldn't.
So then there were the moles. They were big, and angry, they could dig, and they had shells. Nasty fellows. Interesting fact: they have a nerve running just under the back of their neck ridge. An important nerve. I think it's their spinal, hard to tell. A good stomp on that area should stun it for a while, a dagger might kill it.
And that leaves us with the worm. No interesting facts - even bigger, even angrier, and made of equal parts monstrosity and mouth. Oh, maybe one note: it explodes when you throw a burning slut in its stomach. I think it's the burning that does it. That, or she was poledancing, and the thing got a nosebleed, blood has no nose to get out, pressure builds up, boom. No, definitely the burning.

Note to self: being silly apparently helps me cope with the fact that I'm still a prisoner. Or I am actually going insane.

Well, other than our little excursion, everything's same old: knight got resurrected and slightly more crazy, wizard fought him, is still fighting him, actually, and golem is proudly watching his glass balls full of sand. Not a euphemism.
Not that bringing sand to a desert helps, but hey, I did sillier things when I was young. I hope he's happy with has sand balls.

You forget, the name change was at the Aglaia AFTER the worm and stuff.

(Balls of sand...

What have I done. Why couldn't they be geodesic spheres. Why?)

Well guys, with Eagle not joining us, and I'm feeling pretty crappy this morning. I think I'm going to go ahead and cancel todays session.

If people are free, I can run a pickup game either sunday or tuesday. Let me know if any of that works for you. Otherwise we will try again next week.

Aww...

Either day is good, but I was really fired up to do today.

Oh well.

Sorry Pyro, with Eagle saying he would be late, I assumed we wouldn't be playing today(yesterday by now I suppose).

Tuesday is still a possibility, but I think I might rather have that day off for my own activities.

Hmm...

Well, the most I can really say is you're the GM.

If you want to not do a session, the session doesn't get done.

Your choice, really, the rest of us can do whatever we want, but it's your choice.

I see you've decided.

Enjoy your day off, GM!

Sorry Pyro, knew it would be a long night last night during the Azure game. So wanted to sleep in here today.

Anyways, look forward to this on thursday! Fun times ahead.

2 words: Control Monster

Ok guys I've got some bad news.

I've decided that I don't really want to continue this game as it is. I've got no motivation for it, and while I know we barely got started, it's the same issue I'm having with the other forum games right now. If I'm not interested or motivated to work on them, it really does feel like work.

I think the biggest issue I've had with this game from the start was a lack of structure. The big freeform idea I tried to pursue just left a lot of work on me, and gave more power to the players than I like. It was hard to make a character grow, and the sheer randomness of it all just let stats barely matter.

Perhaps at a later time I will revive this idea. But for now, I think I'd like to stick to the two Pokemon games I have going here in the forums, and enjoy them while I still can.

Well, it was fun while it lasted. I wish I could Join another game like this, but I'm a horrible at finding stuff like that...

On my part, I tried to take as much work off of you as I could. It seemed simple.

I agree, it was a nice game. It's a bit sad that it has to end, but I understand if you're not in the mood, and I'm very grateful for the sessions we played.

Also, I forbid you to feel guilty about stopping this ;)
