DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Elves: Useful only as trap testers?
« on: August 24, 2016, 09:30:56 pm »
I think most players, if they bother, trade for the exotic animals they somethings bring.  I mean who is not going to want a giant tiger for the front entrance.
I personally feel elves as trade partners were nerfed a few releases ago because they used to bring good quantities of food and wood if you were running low.   Then they stopped leaving only the animals as an interesting trade item.

Funny how circumstance alters perception.  Maybe it's cause I work for a company that does a lot of managed infrastructure and cloud migration, but asses with eyes glowing of azure made me think of the salespeople for a certain cloud platform.

Edit:  autocorrect thought I meant cucumber instead of circumstance.  Corrected now.

Was the stream or river on the bottom level still frozen?  I've heard of situations before where this would mean the waterfall keeps falling and there's no river in which the water can go,  hence it floods.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Danger room balance?
« on: February 20, 2016, 01:10:30 am »
I have to admit that I've never done danger rooms, but I seem to remember someone in here mentioning that wooden spikes will do that and you have to be careful to use wooden spears or swords only.  Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Bedrooms vs. Dormitories
« on: December 18, 2015, 04:27:04 pm »
Well.  I personally find dorms to be a good temporary solution.  I'll usually dig out some basic dorms quick and put in like 10 beds.  This should reduce the bad thoughts to a reasonable level while giving you some time to prepare other more pressing matters like food water booze and protection.  After that's in hand I usually circle back and dig out nicer bedrooms.  But this is just my playstyle.

Couldn't agree more.  I'm personally very much looking forward to creating the Dwarven library of Alexandria.   Gonna put everything on papyrus scrolls for realism too.

Not really wanting to start a flame war, as it looks like it's about to happen, but I'd like to reiterate my support for shonai_dweller's post.  Not only do i agree with his perspective, but his posts were helpful and generally polite.

DF Suggestions / Re: Maaaagiiiiic
« on: August 24, 2015, 10:05:45 pm »
before posting a suggestion you should take a look at the planned features, your suggestion might already be there!
Take a looks at dev_single.
Thereīs nothing that we can think of that Tarn and Zach donīt already have planned.

'Tis a sad truth

Really?

What about a living maze that as you travel through it, it consumes more and more of your mind until you just go outright insane becoming a permanent denizen of the maze for it to use like a pawn.

Already implemented.  It's the menu system.

I genuinely LOLed at this.

Apart from this,  dwarves are not magic,  but their beards are.   They channel the spirit of Chuck Norris and the beard thus confers a limited form of invincibility.

DF Suggestions / Re: super gems
« on: August 24, 2015, 09:10:16 pm »
While I know that df and Tolkien's world's aren't necessarily the same, I'm really surprised that no one has yet referenced the Arkenstone from Tolkien mythology in this thread.  While it's never really explained what it is or what it does, it had value to the dwarves. It could easily work its way into religious scenarios and or wars to possess the stone, or to rescue it from a dragon.  And there were several instances of alternate jewels or artifacts in the literature, such as the silmaril, the rings obviously, necklaces, etc. Some of these obviously had power, but was largely uncontrollable by any mortal - supposedly the wizards might be able to wield them,  but they were basically gods given human form. I love the idea of super jewels by the way.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Friendly troll?
« on: August 21, 2015, 06:10:03 pm »
I've had the same.  I would just set a few cage traps in the doorway to catch him if he leaves so you don't have to worry about him.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Too Many Idlers
« on: August 10, 2015, 07:02:50 pm »
I was just in a similar position because I started building a bunch of cage traps without the cages to load them with.  I was getting a lot of cage not available spam and my idlers refused to do other jobs until the cage traps were filled. Once I got enough cages it took care of itself.  Did you do something similar recently?  Maybe not necessarily with cage traps but anything where they couldn't complete another task?

Definitely sounds like a goblin civ.  What probably happened is that the goblins conquered a bunch of elven sites and the siege was sent from one of those, hence being all elven.  Is rare but I've seen it happen and is a common thread that pops up.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Armor effectiveness
« on: July 14, 2015, 05:56:21 pm »
Can you be more specific in terms of how much armor they have on (so much they are slow doesn't help) and which skills you are talking about.?
