Letting it consume itself sounds fascinating...I might have to try this more often.  Alternatively ending with the HFS or magma is awesome and dwarfy.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Are you lazy?
« on: February 19, 2016, 06:26:04 pm »
Barrels and rock pots full of meals make me lots of cash.  I dig out maybe 10-20 average rooms and offices a few suites for nobility, and the rest of the schlubs get a dormitory.  I use ore veins in a rather slapdash fashion.  My architecture utilizes natural formations and digging as much as possible, but it also gives everything a sort of organic look.  I have a macro on the keyboard that presses ENTER and then DOWN, and holding this down selects or unselects a ton of stuff.

I'm medium lazy.

Interesting, I didn't know royalty would arrive after the HFS.

I've always gotten the royals by meeting export and tribute requirements to become the Mountainhome.  I do see that there is a bug about your situation, but maybe they will still come if you meet export/tribute requirements?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: FPS woes
« on: January 21, 2016, 11:26:30 pm »
I am not suffering from any of these FPS nightmares and I wonder if there is a gameplay behavior / condition that is responsible for your situation...

Perhaps you are simulating a lot of fluid dynamics by pushing around water or lava?  Perhaps some conficting zone / area / military order is causing you endless loops of processing?  Maybe there is a pathfinding error because of a locked door to the caves or some such?

It's complicated and I think sometimes the complexity of DF can just crush ANY computer if there is too much to simulate.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: A Quick Game

If you don't want them to be a manager or bookkeeper, then were-dwarves usually aren't worth the amount of micro required to keep the rest of your population safe.

I tend to assign my undesirables to "naked cave explorer" duty, although I bet they could also be used for some good trap bait...

Vanilla, never had a crash in 40 aside from the tree growing into structure bug which is easy to avoid.

I enjoy the new features too much to ever consider going back.

Unlikely but not impossible!  1 in 128 chance, assuming the male / female likelyhood is equal.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Possible defense against vermin?

This method doesn't stop vermin from spawning, but isn't it good just to use a room to limit exposure and negative thoughts when seeing vermin?

I usually just use cats, but I think you're smart to put vermin out of view to reduce bad thoughts.  I'm going to adopt this idea.

I have never found the were-beast fort to be viable or worth the effort.  I don't know a really good way to spread the infection without incurring too much collateral damage.  I'm not saying it is impossible, I'm just saying it doesn't seem to be worth the effort.

If I end up with were-dwarves, I find they make great cave explorers or shock troops but aren't useful for much else.

I don't care about the updates or it being current.  This book helped teach me all of the fundamentals and was fun to read away from the computer.  It is still a fantastic introduction to the game.

Also, this picture of the book that I found long ago puts joy in my heart and iron in my veins.  It helped me realize what I was getting into.  :D

Military isn't that bad once you dig into the guts of the interface and the particulars of their functions.  I'm still learning how it all works after over a year, and only recently have I dug into patrols and schedules.  It is an intimidating beast at first.

Now I understand that I can assign dwarves to a squad, equip them with exactly what I want to, and have them train, patrol and relax on a schedule.  It isn't that bad and you've already accepted the difficulty curve of DF so just learn it by experimentation and wiki, like everything else.

As other posters have said, the real pain is the convoluted interface and knowing that your best laid plans are constantly stymied by psychotic, alcohol dependent crazy people with depression issues and deadly weapons.

No dice on looking through old relationships.  All it tells me is that this dwarf was obese and female, and that her torso is missing.  No more information seems available.

Thanks for all the comments folks!

I'll try and find his profile because I am genuinely curious as to why he flipped out.

This is on the current version of DF btw.

Leave them there.  Your medium sized woodpile will always be stocked.
