DF General Discussion / Re: A look back - DF 0.21.93.19a, circa August 2006
« on: December 05, 2017, 08:04:20 pm »
Playing DF from like 2011. Tonns of stuff added, tonns of things to learn. It's really to steep curve to climb in a year or two =)
As for me, main saviour was other games.
Like, you accidentally see, that there was bridges (tm) added in the game, and you switch there.
some time later you see video from fighting over 4k ships, and atleast it became possible. You switch there.
Then... oh well, you accidentally notice the link to DF in favorites, come here just to see you've been off for 2 years. What have been changed? Lets see... Oh, multi-level trees?! I've been waiting for you, guys! Lets switch here!

And this goes on in a circle. Nice to have some projects, that keep progressing all those years and keep impressing players.
World keeps going after you start?
Cooking update?
New ships and omega-implants?
We want all of it. And it doesn't even matter, in what game.

DF General Discussion / Re: Video card is irralevant

Well, VNC of TeamViewer - can't see much differents. They all differ from RPD - in their case, graphics really rendered server-side.
As for DFTerm... Dunno, still can't force myself to play without graphics set...=_= In other way problems with late game on 200+ dwarf fortress would be solved XD

Annnnnd?) Pretty obvious result
Just in case: If you used RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol, via "Connect to remote desktop") - it used some dumb built-it video drivers and don't really use your video card. Had same issues with Geforce 650i... xD
If you want to play DF remotedly (or any other game), try using TeamViewer. Iirc it even allowed me to play some more graphics-intensive games. Don't remember exact list, yet sure I was able to play Minecraft more or less smoothly - main problem was in my WiFI speed at "local" machine

Well... I dont think, that I'm the first one to think 'bout such thing with workshops, so maybe we'll just wait someone also to join discussion=)

1. With economy, I think, it even may be much funnier... But much harder to balance things. Becouse dwarves, that don't work will eventually become richer=)
2. Well, happiness through thoughts may be somehow wrong... But not sure. Anyway, may be it'll be enough to have dream come true.
3. Well, I almost sure, that moving suspended job down the list is possible - need to google for this... But 'hide it from player'... Hm, maybe it's just not needed? May player know, that some brave dwarf works in this workshop. Why not?
4. Erm... Custom wishes? Urist McDwarf wants magma smelter in his Royal Bedroom?xD

Hmmm.... How about not so 'free-time' things?
I mean, lets say dwarf have a dream of mastering profession. This dwarf is idle. Needed workshop is empty. Then lets create some job for this exact dwarf in this exact workshop.
As long as I can remember, dfhack can simply specify, who will do that work and what material to use.
Lets say, for the start, it'll take cheapest available material. If this all will work fine - then maybe consider on material according to dwarf happiness/status/profession rate.
This work have a high chance, that dwarf will claim created item, if it's of high quality (masterpiece or, lets say, first-of-this-quality-maid).
Possibly, this'll raise this dwarf's happiness.

This have several questions, as I can see:
1. Is there possibility to force dwarf claiming item?
2. Is there possibility to increase dwarf's happiness from DFhack (if not - lets just stay with this from making dream come true).
3. This 'work' should really stay background. Lets say, it'll be hidden from the list in workshop from player (is it possible?), and if manager and/or player have orders to this specific workshop - it'll be autosuspended. Is this possible to make?
4. As an additional variant. What about dwarf to be able to designate and build needed workshop in owned room, if there's free space and needed material, which would be always claimed by him (or while dwarf ownes this room) and will be used for such tasks? Or maybe possibility for player to create such 'community workshop center's for them, whose workshops will be out-of-controll for player and manager.

Sorry, I hadn't even looked into modding dwarf fortress, so all I have is raw idea=) But dunno how others, I'll be just glad, if my dwarves will be able to create even useless stuff while idling xD
Anyway, PTW and should try this stuff in my fort, if it's compatible with 34.11 and starter pack (Peridexis I guess).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: August 17, 2014, 04:29:21 pm »
Damn... I really just feel the need to tell it somewhere=)
So... after a month of new version and huge amount of bugs and crashes I decided to try 34.11 again. This time Peridexis (usually played vanilla). Well, I had a year or so without DF...
So. This time I decided to play medium history, 250 years... (usually - very short).

<TL;DR>

At first point. I found underground cavern at lvl 15. Usually it's on 40+ for me and my fortress uses levels from 5 to 20. I was mad until I found... MAGMA POOL in it. And big native silver vein few levels under.
When I was ready to develop and experiment with magma without leaving all other things without dwarves... Forgotten beast appeared there. Yep, I had no militaries yet, so I just locked cavern with walls.

At second point. When I got some force to deal with this beast, I got sieged. Well, just 15 goblins (smallest siage for me), so I locked up in fort. When they leaved, I begun to build cage and weapon-trap labyrinth to handle next siege to the point, when my marksdwarves can take them down.

At third point. I got sieged year later previous goblins. Well, my traps wasn't ready, I just forgot about them... So I pulled both levers (one locks my main entrance by bridge, second raises bridge in the end of trap labyrinth, so I can close fort somehow) and returned on reading about magmasafe furnace and smelter workshops.

Four, and last point. 5 minutes after this, I returned to DF.... To see, that trap-locker bridge is still down, it's not connected to the lever. Some dwarves killed, some goblins inside fort, all cage traps are full and militaries somewhere 'in a galaxy far, far away'. Somehow, I managed to survive with huge number of 88 dwarves from 110-115 at start of the siege. Yep... Screwed up=)

< /TL;DR>

Dear dwarves. Now, when my fort is just 5 years old. I have magma pool, alot of metal and silver ores. Additionally I have 8 trapped cave dragons (they were among invaders), among them there's 2 war cave dragons. And this is first time I don't know, what I need to do next. ???

And yep, this is first time I have so much FUN playing =)

PS. Sorry for my english, it's not my native language ::)
