I've noticed goblin sieges seem to happen much earlier now. My current fortress just had one at 46 citizens and I had one before with only about 30 dwarves.

Is there any consensus on the current triggering conditions? 80 citizens is obviously no longer valid.

I ran the numbers for several meals in my fortress and they worked out correctly; if you want to test your own meals you can use the formula on the wiki (use the item value table to look up your ingredients). Do use the actual value from the [k] "look" menu, not your broker's guesstimates.

Fair enough, guess it was my broker.

Was the formula for prepared food values heavily nerfed? I prepared five pots packed full of lavish meals for my first caravan, and they were worth about 50 - 75 DB each. Even accounting for a no-skill broker that seems way lower than I've ever seen. I admit it would make sense considering how insanely valuable food was before. It would also ruin my "pack nothing but turkeys" embark strategy, but I can adjust...

One other interesting thing on this fortress. I dug into the side of a volcano. It somehow burst through a portion of its topmost wall and started a continuous lava flow down the side of the mountain. I'm not even sure when it started doing that. I actually like this and hope it's not a bug. The way its flowing is no danger to my fortress and adds some serious cool points.

(It also let me discover that trees are now apparently impervious to lava.)

So, new fortress, first year. Getting things set up, when suddenly I notice:

"Olin Kubuksobir, king has mandated the construction of certain goods."

...what?

I go check the unit screen. I'm still on my original seven and one of them has apparently gone and crowned himself king!

Is there any theoretical circumstance where this could legitimately happen or is this another DF2014 bug? I'm a little pissed because this probably means I can't get the retinue of soldiers now. (Though I guess with new versions coming right and left it doesn't matter much.)

I met my first necromancer shortly after embark the other day... he brought two undead and just stood where he entered the map. For months. Didn't attack until I brought some military dwarves near him. Then he climbed a tree while his zombies tore my poor untrained dorfs up. (Shoulda left him alone for a few years until I had more immigrants.)

On a tangential note, I love how stuff will climb/perch in trees now. Chopping down a tree and watching a kea get mangled is hilarious and it's gonna be fun cleaning up sieges that way. Who'd have thought wood cutting would become a military skill?

I think for the brewing bug, if you grow something brewable then you'll suddenly be able to brew anything you've got available.

Today's update mentions the brew bug, so I guess (hope) it'll be squashed in the next one.

Can't help you there then, might be a bug.

Ah, well. My other nasty surprise was preparing a few pots of food for the first caravan and finding they're worth only a few DB each instead of hundreds or thousands. Food value seems to have been massively nerfed.

Is brewing bugged or has it been changed to be more complicated or something?

I have embarked with 5 each of the following:
strawberries
grapes
blueberries
blackberries
raspberries

Now the kitchen screen says they're brewable, and I got stills set up and lots of pots, but when I try to make booze it cancels with the message that DRINK_MAT producing plant is missing. I was able to brew up my plump helmets no problems.

Is this a bug or is there some additional step for those?

I've noticed that in the Still menu there are two options now: brew drink from plant and brew drink from fruit. I feel like the things you listed are *probably* classified as fruit in DF, (although they could well not be and why not, little else makes sense). If you try brewing fruit it may work.

Oops, forgot to mention, that doesn't work either. It wont let me brew them at all.
