DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Hurrah for elven goblins

What more could dwarves ask when their pointy-eared rivals arrive adorned in goblinite? :D

I had grandmaster discipline for a squad of ten dwarves decked out in leather and adamantine armor against a horde of goblins with adept discipline in the Arena. A lot of goblins ran in terror, and I think only about two of those dwarves ran away, as well.

Yeah, the discipline skill is buggy at the moment, but when it's ironed out, I think it's going to play a huge role in battles, from that point on.

No zombie sieges in this new version yet on my end, although I used to get quite a bit of them in the previous one. Since they're just standing at the edge of the map, you might as well continue about your business minus the caravans... Perhaps this is a bug?

I really don't think there's any way to not make those dwarves panic and either go axes-blazing or run like elves. Especially with the new discipline skill, it's going to be a little more complicated (and fun!) to train a proper military. Besides, they still try to attack anything dangerous even when you tell them to station at an important point, regardless.

I've yet to have a werecreature assault my fortress, so there's nothing I can really say about them, apart from them either being really weak or running away back in 0.34.11 (at least, in my experiences).

Urist McKid: "Mommy... Can you look for monsters in the cabinet?"
Urist McMom: "Don't worry, sweety. There aren't monsters in our fortress! Well, maybe there are weremammoths, but they're stealth and we couldn't protect you from them anyway. Now, have good dreams!"

Next thing Urist McKid knows, his face will meet a nice, silver war hammer from the Weremammoth.

Huh, if you can have stealth Weremammoths, what's to say you can't have stealth Were-anything?

Urist would throw himself in it and suffer a painful, melting death drink it all to his heart's content.

WWUD if Elves showed up to his fort?

When I was preparing for embark to a fort, I accidentally pressed 'e,' the game began loading the embark, and I thought it froze for a moment. Then, the introduction to the embark screen showed up.

I also did this for another two consecutive times, on the same embark.

And yes, I'm new here. I hope my stay would be enjoyable. Praise Armok.

Welcome, to Bay12 Forum. Please, mind the corpses, blood puddles, and abandoned projects littering the halls as you go about your business, and please, do enjoy your stay.

Thank you,  :D.

Oh, and don't worry, I've seen my fair share of insanity concerning DF (one of them, Koganusan: Boatmurdered. My goodness, that was a heck of a tale to read!).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Does .40 seem easier to anyone?
« on: July 29, 2014, 02:45:02 pm »
I've had a number of forts now, and aside from unexpected bug-issues (tree-related murder, climb/fall, etc.) .40 seems a lot less eventful than .34 was.  All of my forts have had:

- less FBs emerge
- almost no goblin attacks
- fewer megabeasts/mini-megabeasts (cyclops, minotaurs, etc.)/wereanimal attacks

Compared to .34.11.

I am generally running medium to large worlds with very short history.  What's everyone else's experience?

As far as gameplay goes in the new update, I have yet to experience any of this. Mostly because I have yet to even get beyond summer due to computer limitations! (Although, I'm mostly busy with other things, as well.)

In 0.34.11, most of my recent fortresses suffered necromancer invasions or goblin invasions; I only had one goblin ambush in my entire career of playing DF, for the matter. Apart from occasional were-creature, it's been rather peaceful for me in that build. Around this update, I would say that it mostly depends on where you're located. Sieging armies are probably more interested in the older, and more successful, sites than some backwater outpost nobody but their own faction cares about.

At the moment, in my 0.40.05 fortress, I've set up a small base inside the side of a mountain. Right now, I'm trying to finish digging the rest of the base before going in deeper and planning out the rest of the layout of my fort. Even with the recent tweaks and fixes, I'm still a little slow,  :(. (My computer, that is. It used to run fine in 0.34.11, however.)

And yes, I'm new here. I hope my stay would be enjoyable. Praise Armok.
