DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Songs that relate to dwarf fortress
« on: July 22, 2010, 08:13:48 am »
I've always had the idea in my head to do an animation of dwarves searching for the perfect site and starting a fort set to Dethklok - The Lost Vikings

in the new version i haven't had any beasty bother my fort much before i had a functional military to smack it down.
A giant cave bat did show up and viciously shook a few dwarves by their heads untill the severed part sailed off in an arc before my military got to it.

the more time i spend with the new military setup the more i appreciate it but i do agree strongly that it should show more info on the dwarves combat skills while scrolling through to recruit. What would be even nicer is if the list was sorted by combat skill so all trained dwarves were at the top. I love the direction of the new system though.

i tried turning immigration off to see how populous i could get by just having babies and it just took too long to get interesting. bone fort sounds fun. i hate plump helmets and butchering provides lots more food now, but yeah, your soldiers will be worthless. maybe you could allow them to use steel only after it's been decorated with bone? Bonafide, if you will. HAR

Oooh, ooh! Here's another fix!

4 seconds  after embark BAM ever ones dead..... yea play now embarked me with 15 fire snakes as food that set the world on fire yea ( play now)  is really dwarven for (DIE FAST BY FIRE)

I'm sorry you got burned.

You must be steaming mad!

I wouldn't blame you for being red-hot with anger.

Let the rage ember out though, food types are random with Play Now, it wasn't intentional.

Ok I'm done. :)
I agree that hazardous materials should not be included with "Play Now" by default.
So... new pun thread?

Maybe. But this one would likely burn out faster, there's just less to go on.

Maybe with a little effort we could have it rise from the flames.

If you like it extra crispy, sure.

Hey, I like things hot off the press.
hottt
Oh, looks like the embers are turning into ash. We need to think of hot stuff lest we burn out of puns.

Meh, no rush. We can put this on the back burner.

This is getting un BEAR able!

did i do it right?
 ???
This thing's combusting into a quote pyramid!
Sure it isn't a volcano?  Uristallajokull!

Oh god, the sheer mass of quotes and bad puns burns my eyes.
SO WHY DID YOU QUOTE IT?!
I was wondering when people would start flaming each other.
FLAME ON

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA RIDE THIS QUOTE PYRAMID INTO THE EARTH

The sparks are really flyin here! We are blazing new trails into the unknown! This is sure to get us into a world of heat.

DF Bug Reports / Re: DF Runs inexplicably slow on my new graphics card.
« on: August 02, 2008, 03:18:22 am »
well i'll be damned. there were some remnant "asus enhanced display drivers" seperate from catalyst drivers. removed those and started DF and it went as fast as can be. Thanks for the replies folks.

aye, i have the latest drivers. I've turned off/on vsync in the DF ini and in my nvidia control panel. I've turned music off. I even swore a blood oath to Armok. I cant imagine that DF is straining my card and my old card was slower and it ran fine. I'm totally lost here. I've uninstalled all ATI drivers via control panel and with Driver Sweep. I'm running XP, nothing changed from when i was getting normal fps to now other than the video card. I've also tried old versions that i know ran fine and they are just as slow as the new versions with enhanced world history gen.

I ran DF on my radeon x1950 pro just fine through many versions but when i installed my new geforce 9600gt it started running ridiculously slow. The intro movie crawls along and the game gets like 5fps unless i set gfps cap to 10, then i get like 26fps on a small site with just the 7 starting dwarves. i have tried many different sites but either way, even th intro movie and main menu are slow and laggy. Weirder still, it gets worse when i use higher resolutions like its straining my card or something.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Suggestions for old 2D version to try?
« on: December 12, 2007, 07:32:00 am »
The pre-packaged mountains of old always annoyed me, it really limited the replay value. Not to downplay the replay value of classic DF because the "sandbox" nature of the game makes your own creativity the limit. The current version is just so meaty and deep it blows my mind every single day.

Given further thought, classic 2d DF is a great place to learn game mechanics without completely overwhelming yourself, although a little overwhelming is inevitable.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Generic strategy and building questions
« on: December 12, 2007, 06:49:00 am »
I always have under and aboveground crops. It depends on what you want to grow, some crops are above ground only and some are underground only. Whip Vines (produces the most valuable flour) and Sun Berries (produces the most valuable drink) are above ground crops so i always have one plot for each. Stacks of prepared meals made from whipe vine flour can be very lucrative in trades.

i usually put my apartments and dining hall all together on their own z-level. Read the wikki entry on "noise" for further advice on keeping your bedrooms quiet.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can't read glass furnace jobs

I always knew about hitting tab to switch through UI views but I thought "Why the hell would you want the menu to take up 2/3 of the screen?" so I left it at 2/3 game screen 1/3 menu.

Victory is mine!!

If you tab to the extended menu view you can read the longer job titles! I knew there was some way! Just needed the coffee to kick in.
