I agree that megabeasts need to be bigger (a colossus really should be more, you know, colossal).  It looks like Toady is at least considering it.

Also, Dwarves set to [ALL_WORK] and [NO_PLAY] will be dull boys.

Of course now you will need to write a wolf language so that they can have names.

Goblins usually wear 'narrow' armor which can't be worn by other, bigger races.

Dwarf mothers are so hardcore.  I have an elite wrestler who nursed her baby with one arm and ripped a goblin snatcher apart with the other and then went back to sparring as if nothing had happened.

How do you lop off a throat and leave the head on?

I don't think you can import sand or raw or cut glass of any type from any of the merchants, can you?

Does the baby have an unusual amount of facial hair and a penchant for alcohol?

I like marble as well as the deep red stones like kaolinite and bauxite.

I absolutely detest chert.  It's ugly, it's worthless, and there is always too goddamned much of it.  I even hate the name:  'chert'.

...CHERT!!! [shakes fist in the air]

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / An existential question
« on: March 18, 2008, 03:19:00 pm »
To the extent that DF is a role playing game, what role does the player actually take?  Are you playing as one of your dwarves, possibly the mayor, issuing commands to the other dwarves?  This wouldn't make much sense as you can keep giving commands when there is no mayor or any kind of leader in the fortress.

Are you some sort of semi-scient god like being?  This would make a little more sense because you don't control any of the dwarves directly but are able to command them through some sort of delayed telepathy.

I suppose this is a question that comes up in any simulation-style game where the player controls the action through menus rather than a physical avatar.  I'm just curious how other players view themselves when they are playing a fortress.

Nope.

The bug is that, when the children become adults, they keep their legendary skills, but their profession remains 'peasant'.

Smoothing boulders is much easier (d->s).

I like the idea of using hatches and bridges, but why link them to a lever?  Why not just put a pressure plate directly underneath the spot where the item or critter is going to fall from?

This is what I do.  I think that scouring the world for a specific site that meets some arbitrary 'requirements' is not only boring in and of itself, but it takes a lot of fun out of the rest of the game.  I like picking a site and not knowing exactly what is going to be in it until I get there.

I have had this problem too.  After a certain point, the liasons just quit coming,  or they come but won't set up trade agreements anymore.  And the elves just bring bin after bin of rope reed cloth.
