DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Caravan stuck in trade depot. Why?
« on: July 05, 2023, 09:19:14 pm »
Well, now I'm embarrassed. This time I just waited long enough and they eventually left like normal. This was about a month and a half after I got the message that they had embarked on their journey, and a couple days before the next season change and auto-save, so I probably didn't get this outcome previously just because I didn't wait long enough.

Maybe they lose some mules or wagons so they can't finish packing up?
Definitely not that.
In 47.05 I recently had a caravan stuck as you described until I deleted a pen/pasture zone over their exit path. Then they left. Depot access showed green even before the zone was deleted though, so I'm lucky I tried it.
I tried again having deleted all the zones the caravan might want to path through, but no luck.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Caravan stuck in trade depot. Why?

Playing 44.12.

I know removing the trade depot releases the merchants, but I don't want to do that because then they drop the goods. It's just a hassle to do that every year, anyway.

What I want to know is why they get stuck in the trade depot in the first place (so I can prevent it). Pressing D shows they're able to path to any of the 4 borders. There wasn't any wild animal or intruder accosting them. I've savescummed to before the caravan's arrival a few times now and the same thing happens each time, not to mention the same thing happened last year.

They appear to do the packing up "animation" as normal, then just stay in place. If I press t and look at the trade depot, my exports still appear there but with the [T] next to them, but if I look at it with q it says there are no merchants trading right now.

What causes this? If this starts happening in a save, is there a chance things might go back to normal?

Additional question - one of the people I'm looking for is a prisoner in a dwarf fortress, according to legends mode. Are prisoners found in any particular section of a generated fort? Is there a dungeon? Or perhaps are they walking around like normal citizens?

This is in 0.44.12

I looted a demon's lair and now I want to distribute back all the treasure to its rightful owners. So I enter a trade with some friendly dwarf and select all the artifacts in my inventory and show them to him, and for each of them he'll either say, "Oh, so-and-so in such-and-such a site wants that back," or he'll say nothing.

Now, when I want to find the person who wants the artifact, since hearing the person's name in the trade dialogue doesn't count as my character having heard the name, I can't ask anyone about that person's location, so I can only go to their reported site and greet everyone until I find the person I'm looking for. This is pretty annoying when the site is a dwarf fortress, and FPS plummets, and the person I'm looking for could be in any corner of a long web of underground corridors. I even copied my save, pulled up legends mode, and found that the guy I had been looking for was actually long dead.

Any tips on finding people in adventure mode?

Also, when somebody dies who wanted an artifact returned, does that ownership pass down to anyone else, and if so, who?

Tutorials are a bad idea, son.

Not only do you need to take the time to make them now, you also have keep them up to date with every subsequent release. That means the amount of dev time spent on these tutorials compounds over time. So your hypothetical v80 or v100 gets pushed back more and more the earlier tutorials are added.

And anyway, the more fundamental problem is the UI, of course. And what the tutorial would look like depends 100% on the state of the UI. Since the brothers are already planning on overhauling the UI, it seems to me to be a waste to develop tutorials for a UI that's going to go away anyway.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How hard is it to ‘learn’ ASCII?

Easy peasy. I don't think it's harder than learning a tileset, personally.

Thanks for the help! I tried pedestals and it worked. One thing though: doesn't taking artifacts from pedestals count as theft in the eyes of the fortress?

I'll try the drawbridge next.

I'm using version 44.12.

I made a full set of artifact weapons and armor in fortress mode. So I retired my fort and started a new adventurer in that fort, but when I go to pick up the artifacts they seem to have disappeared. I'm pretty sure they've been scattered about within the fortress area (I saw my mayor's artifact bed up on the surface where it shouldn't have been; also legends say they're still at the fort), but I really don't want to search every tile to collect them all.

I've tried a few things to get them to stay in one spot. I defined an artifact stockpile and had them all gathered there. I tried putting them behind a forbidden door, I tried forbidding each artifact individually, I tried forbidding just the bins they're contained in. Each time they've gotten moved from their place by the time my adventurer gets there.

I'm pretty sure I've done this successfully on an earlier version. What's the best way to keep my gear from getting moved?

How do i get them to the atom smasher, though? That's my main problem.

I can't figure out how to kill my children and babies. They don't seem to obey burrows, and I can't find online another way to move them or kill them. If I could at least figure out how to transport the children, I could make them simply starve in a locked room or something...

Anyone willing to help out a noob here? These kids are about half my population and eating up all my supplies and strange mood chances.
