Remember the horse scene from The Revenant? Yeah, like that.

DF General Discussion / Re: PeridexisErrant's DF Starter Pack
« on: September 29, 2019, 03:10:54 am »
I dont know why but for some reason the auto-updater doesnt seem to work, it tells me the new stuff will be unpacked or whatever when I have it do it, but it doesnt seem to do anything... Is there a way to see a download progress bar or something to see that it IS in fact downloading/unpacking/installing the new update/s?

I second this, auto-updating doesn't seem to do anything. Not really a big problem, it would just save time if it updated my current pack, I wouldn't have to go through all the options in the new version and set them to my custom values.
Excellent work regardless, thank you for your work.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Fulfilling needs
« on: September 26, 2019, 04:05:20 am »
With my system I can switch the dwarves working for their needs through max 10 clicks on Therapist.

how often do you do this? twice a month? once a month? frequency can also turn into micromanagement

If you have  dwarves who pray to 3-4 gods?

The possible switching-around-who-gets-to-satisfy their crafting needs, maybe once every year, if I see that there are some particularly unhappy dwarves or remove the ecstatic ones from the program. Otherwise I just leave everything running as is.

As for praying, I don't really do anything. The temples are there, dwarves use them, I don't really pay that much attention to it because I haven't noticed any glaring problems.

Or maybe tying to it the type of migrants that want to move there.
I think this is all planned for the starting scenarios arc, though.

I believe wooden furniture degrades over time - extremely slowly, but still. A lacquer would be a cool addition for preventing this. Or the wooden degregation could be increased in collaboration with this feature.

One of the lessons of Archcrystal is that wooden furniture does, indeed, degrade over time. The beds dissolved after about 450 years.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: dead carp in well - will the blood ever go away?
« on: September 25, 2019, 07:26:02 am »
I don't think it's ever going away, unless you drain and clean it, but on the other hand, I don't think you're screwed either. It shouldn't have much of an effect, if at all, on the quality of the water.

ps. Or use DFhack to clean contaminants.

Hi, interesting idea, but wouldn't it work more or less the same if leather output simply depended on the creature's size? Just playing devil's advocate here, I love reading people's ideas.

DF Suggestions / Re: Terrible Suggestions Thread

Much suggestion, very terrible: getting wood must first require felling the tree, then sawing the trunk and branches, then splitting the wood, followed by a period of drying, shorter or longer depending on climate, wood stack location, tree species, etc. Otherwise item quality and durability is negatively impacted and firewood emits smoke and becomes less efficient.

DF Suggestions / Re: Dwarf Sport
« on: September 25, 2019, 05:26:13 am »
This is a nice idea with lots of room to expand.
It's true that they already have competitions in WG, so maybe it is a future goal for some distant arc, but I don't recall ever reading about it.
Sports could be fixed or proc-gened like instruments (number of players, of teams, of balls, of goals, objectives, etc); dwarves could develop an affinity for specific teams or athletes (also extremes: hooliganism?); athletes could move around the world to participate in organized tournaments (Olympics?), or you could send your best athletes to represent your site/government; stadiums!  Training rooms!

Hi. I've heard that, with praying, it helps to have single-god temples. I have a temple for each god and one generic (for foreign gods) and I haven't noticed any problems. All are regularly visited. Maybe you need to let some time pass, but you definitely do not need to cancel jobs (I have work shop orders running for years or decades).

For the crafting needs of my 160 dwarves, I have made some 8-10 craft shops, with different rank requirements and different permanent orders covering different materials and then I've given to most of the dwarves wood, bone or stone crafting (with Therapist it's super easy). Excluded are the very skilled artisans, that regularly craft exquisite and masterwork items through my orders.
This way there is a constant rotation of dwarves crafting stuff and taking care of that need, but it's not super micromanaged. The "super-micromanagy" way would be to make dedicated workshops for every 1-2 dwarves and only allow those to craft there, with permanent orders to craft something every season or so, but I'm not willing to go that mad with the system. With my system I can switch the dwarves working for their needs through max 10 clicks on Therapist.

I'm positive that regardless of the other parameters, you need a minimum population to be attacked by megabeasts.
Sorry, I don't know the answer to raiding for GCS.

Other Games / Re: Mordhau: lutes of fire
« on: August 13, 2019, 02:24:37 pm »
Hi folks, I recognize Urist because I saw him in a match once :)
I love Mordhau and my gf loves watching me play, she wonders how is it possible for me to like both DF and something like Mordhau...
Anyway, in my opinion:
Crossroads super unbalanced, to the point I hardly play it anymore;
Mountain Peak very unbalanced, but enjoyable all the same; the big brawls in the courtyard can be fun;
Grad and Camp are both good and enjoyable;
Taiga is probably unbalanced but I like it.
The two new maps are looking good and we can't wait to play them!

Edit: my steam id is Kaeso Venator!

DF Suggestions / Re: Attachable 1x1 "container buildings" to workshops
« on: August 09, 2019, 04:05:42 am »
I like it, it's a good and, I think, relatively simple suggestion to implement (considering some other ones...). I'd love the reduction in stress in setting up a working chain of workshops and stockpiles, cutting out or reducing all the bugs you mentioned, but especially like the potential FPS savings due to reduced constant hauling. Possibilities are truly vast and it could be a step towards "work zone" workshops.

I use Phoebus' tileset, I state it because I'm not sure if it affects the answer or not.
When a dwarf is doing "Socialize", in bright green text, is it different than "Socialize!" In bright magenta? I'm guessing yes, if so, how?
