I am a brand new player to Dwarf Fortress and I'm having rough time getting it down.

I have already found some good guides for how to get into this game, but almost all of them have suggestions or are themed around using mods and graphic packs. I'm weird and I kinda of don't want to use mods or graphic packs and just dive straight in vanilla style.

So my random question is this, are there players out there who feel the same way, or are mods and graphic packs really that essential to enjoying the game?

and also is there a good set of tutorials that do not focus at all on mods or graphic packs.

I scanned a little bit before making this thread I didn't see anything that 100% fits my question, but if it has already been talked about in detail in the past please point me towards that thread and i'll read though it, I'm new here but I'm not new to forums so I don't know how strict you all are about repeat threads so if so I am sorry.

Here's a good vanilla guide

Awesome thanks I will look into that

Two things.

How much of a micro-manager are you/does uneffeciency annoy you?
--I don't want to keep going back to a workshop to restart jobs, so I use Workflow. I only want the strongest dwarves in the military, so I use dwarf therapist.

Do you have the patience to loo'k' at a tile to see if that 'e' is an elf or an elephant or a...
--I've played long enough to know what ASCII tiles mean what. So I don't use graphic packs.

Mods and graphic packs are there to use or not. The game is playable without. It's about what game you want to play.

First question I would consider myself an okay-ish micro-manager, and at first I don't see uneffeciency annoying me to much while I get the hang of this game, so once I get a better grasp on the game I may look into Workflow and dwarf therapist since they don't really change the look of the game to my understanding.

Second I have the patience but not a lot of time between work and other hobbies so I am expecting it to be an uphill battle, and if I can't make it work after a while I will consider a graphics pack but I want the challenge.

And Thanks to everyone else keep the advice coming I think I am starting to grasp the basics.
