See, this is just the point. You don't need to do that sort of things with other games, and it's something that people have come to expect. It's not necessarily a deal-breaker for everyone, but you can't expect everyone to care enough to condition themselves to understand the game.

If they don't care enough to 'condition' themselves to understand the game then surely they don't care enough to play it, it's like expecting to be able to play a tabletop without understanding the rules or a game of football while being incredibly unfit.

The difficulty in understanding the game lies in the ascii art and horrible user interface, which most people expect more of from games. The rules for football and tabletop games aren't written in some ancient language. There are plenty of people who would play Dwarf Fortress if only it lived up to the standards that they have grown to expect. You cannot blame someone for moving on when plenty of other games provide a fun experience without needing to spend any time at all deciphering it.

Should/did red status limbs remove functionality? Because I had a pair of duelling bronze colossi that had red left and right upper arms, and they could still swing their axes at each other. Would that come under one of their tags like nopain?

Go read a few hundred pages of stories in the community games section, or SA LP archive, if you can't understand the ascii. I recommend Boatmurdered, Nist Akath, and especially Migrursut. By the time you have spent a few days reading you should no longer need a graphical tileset, have a new respect for this game and how far it has come, and would have killed some time before the next patch in a very entertaining way.

Although the fact that he's raging on this version is still pretty hilarious.

I'm pretty sure Toady has all but flat-out stated that this release is a piece of crap. Frankly I'm surprised anyone expected anything remotely playable after release, what with over a year's cumulation of bugs.

I've observed a bronze colossi throwing a chimp using its upper arm. I think this may have been in the old version but I'm not sure.

It's looking like the new combat system has changed how limb parts can be used. I've got two bronze collosi going at it and one of them has both its upper arms pretty much toast, but it's still able to attack the other one with an axe. Unless its grabbing the axe with its mouth or something.

Okay, so after encountering a bronze colossus and getting his ass kicked, my adventurer left his companions behind as bait and fled. After evading the BC, I decided to check his wounds...

Yeah, both of his legs were shattered. However, he was walking along at his normal speed just fine, ignoring the fact that he should be in a wheelchair...

Should effects lke "compound fracture" and "smashed apart" really be able to exist at the same time? It just seems redundant.
