I have to agree on the graphics, the cartoony look really is a boon for the game. It actually doesn't pull you out of the game, and all of the movements seem very realistic and the faces are pure gold. I believe that one of the reasons Valve went with a cartoon style is because it is a video game, and unrealistic moments WILL happen no matter how good the engine. If the graphics are uberrealistic, then when something odd happens it will draw the player out of the game. But if the graphics are presented in a somewhat silly style, then when something silly happens the player's immersion isn't damaged.

Although the characters closing their mouths after yelling when dead can be disturbing...

Actually, wrong. Starflight came before Star Control 2 and it is Star Control 2 that borrows 95% from Starflight and not vice versa so I can't really see how Star Control 2 could set the whole genre :P

Star Control 2 is pretty much a massive evolution of a series, not unlike, say what Daggerfall was compared to Arena.

May I point out that the person you are quoting did point out that Star Control came out after Starflight?

I would say that while Star Control did not spawn the genre, it did set it. I hadn't heard of Starflight until after I had played SC1 and 2 several times, and I hadn't found out about SC2 until several years ago!

May I point out The Pages of Now and Forever? It's just about the best Star Control fansite out there, with enough information for almost any Star Control fan.

I don't feel that any of the voices were awful. The game had better voice acting than quite a few modern games... especially the Orz. "I am *expanding!* It is so much *squishy* to *smell* you!"

This game looks awesome... but since I am on a computer at my college, one of the few computers with no plugins installed in fact, I shall be unable to try this until I get home.

Then I can steal eggs!

Nonono... Globins only appear once you start hacking off limbs.

Either that, or we mod it so that when you bleed, instead of blood puddles, Goblins come out.

I had an idea for an underwater fort, made of glass... under an aquifer under a glacier. I got bored, though, because part of my plan was to mine out everything under the aquifer then tap into it to create the sub-glacial lake.

Duplicate statues give little museum rank... so if you have new statues you should sell the duplicates. Museum has a large but still limited item capacity.

They may give little museum rank, but they still give museum rank, and I haven't hit the item cap yet... so I'll continue adding another statue and card or two every time I pass by :P

I've heard that higher level rogues (rogue master or something like that...?) have both high charisma and high negotiations kills to start with and so are great choices for shopkeepers. I've never had a shop myself, though, only museums... filled with Gwen the Innocents and Mia the Cat Ladies, with the occasional other creature.

Well, health points and feats are the only reasons to continue gaining levels. The first is dependent on your stats, though, so staying low for a long time is more beneficial in the long run, as I don't believe that improvements to your con are retroactive.

I don't say skill points, because you get those for levelling up, regardless of whether or not you have gotten that level before, so one could just keep at getting a level, drinking a potion of descent, relevel, another potion, etc etc and continue gaining skills. Problem is, as far as I can tell, potions of descent are just as rare as cure corruption...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Self Sufficient Island Challenge

Why not turn off cave collapses? That way your artificial island could be anywhere. Imagine goblin siegers loitering twenty z levels below you! Set up a farm and you'd be all set for food and booze, no need for a military and it'd be safe (hah) so no accidents so no need for a well... you wouldn't even need to pilot the fortress at this point. Just make sure to have enough people set for farming and booze production, and you'd be able to leave the computer and come back when the last of that generation has died, set new farmers/brewers, then repeat for infinite years.

Baby dwarves store air in their beards, which they can use to avoid drowning for a few days. They lose the ability by the time they become adults because they would rather store alcohol in there.

That would explain why adult dwarves don't have to drink multiple times a day...

[...on the other hand, Google Ads searching our thread wording could yield some hilarious results.

"Find great prices on Elf bones!"
"Great Kitten recipies!"

I was going to abstain voting until I saw this. I'm in.

...and probably gain a couple of levels...

Ah, Elona, the only game I've played where it's a frantic race to NOT level up. Also note that while the nuke deals lots and lots of damage, it might not deal enough damage... I remember seeing an image on another message board of someone who died like fifteen times to something in Vernis, then died from a nuke, then died another time to the thing in Vernis shouting "Why didn't that work?!"

One of the guys in Vernis... the dweller in vanity, I believe... has a sword which "Ignites Ragnarok." Were you reading the book in Vernis? Because if you were, that person may have attacked one of the random summons, thereby invoking Ragnarok.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: One way to set your fortress on fire
« on: December 15, 2008, 10:08:45 pm »
Oh my. I finally stopped laughing, and am now planning an automatic set-the-wagons-on-fire device for my next fortress... the way they come in will be a long, but safe route, but they'll trigger a pressure plate which will open another, more direct path out. They'll take that one... crossing over the magma and getting lit on fire... then trigger another pressure plate to close that path off so the next caravan will take the original path. And there will be much fire.

Got a potion of cure corruption for marrying a little sister. Sweet.

Unfortunately, I've discovered a slight problem in that, for some reason, the latest version of Elona doesn't work on this computer. I can't extract the files property; it gets about nine tenths of the way then freezes my computer. I still have version 1.13, but that's not fully translated and it's a bit buggier supposedly :/

So, no LP until I manage to install version 1.14 correctly.
