DF Suggestions / Re: a few things, probably already suggested
« on: September 17, 2008, 06:16:32 pm »
Don't necro a thread 9 months old.

There were a lot of "Safe Area" suggestions and i am sure they are in the Eternal Voting.

Thought it better to reuse the thread than create a new one saying essentially the same thing.

I suppose I could support the "Safe Area" suggestion, but it seems to me that the "Stay Indoors" feature was supposed to serve that purpose, and I don't especially look forward to designating every section of an above-ground fortress as safe.

"all dwarfs stay indoors" etc
the "indoors" seems to actually mean "under ground"<P>i have some towers with siege engines in which are built outside, i've put floor over their tops so the areas with siege engines in are marked "light","inside" and "above ground"
but if i change it to anything other that "all dwarfs allowed outside" then my siege operators abandon their machines as they are in a place their not allowed and retreat underground, even though they were in an area marked "inside" and so is the way to where they are, its just that it is also marked "above ground"<P>it would be nice to allow them to be in their towers but not have everyone else wandering around outside not inside.
perhaps make the list
all dwarfs allowed outside
soldiers allowed outside others inside
all dwarfs inside
soldiers allowed inside others underground
all dwarfs underground<P>(again, a "do not ever stand on this area" traffic designation may be useful here)<P>

Has there been any more talk about this one? I was thinking of adding it to Eternal Voting.

I'm thinking either Indoors should mean "Inside" rather than "not light aboveground", or the light ray should be recalculated for the given X,Y column of tiles when a wall or floor is built.

If a particular suggestion gets removed from the list, will you get your vote back if that was one for which you voted? If so, perhaps it would be useful to have a counter of how many votes you have remaining.

You can change your votes at any time, so yes, you can get the vote back :)

It may not be as obvious as a counter would be, but this version does highlight your name in the lists of supporters, so you can scan through to see if they're still there.  Most of the voting items seem unlikely to disappear outside of being fully complete (the small suggestions) or a major release though, so noticing new DF features you've always wanted may be your best indicator to go vote again.

Hmm, I'd suggest sending an email to people who have a vote cast for an item that TO marks complete, but really that'd just be me trying to be lazy about regularly checking updates to EV or DF releases.

Before I'm gonna add 1 or 2 suggestion I want to make sure I did not just overlook it.

* Is there a masterlist of job preferences. That is a vertical list of all possible jobs, with the numbers next to it how many dwarves prefer this job. With [tab] or so, you can change mode, to highlight the dwarves wanting to do that particular job.

* Is there a possibility to see what a lever/pressure plate will do, other than trying out? I know I can try to add a task, and if I say don't find a particular bridge in that list, I know its linked to that list, but this tech also requires me to remember a lot about my fortress :)

I added code to Dwarf Companion for myself which will go through all the current dwarves, and compile a tree of all the jobs, which you can then expand to see which dwarves have that job turned on. Meaning, I find it useful, and would love it in game.

Could use nicknames, I guess, but I think nicknames for dwarves could get out of hand (either 5 dwarves with the nick "Miner", or a dwarf with the nick "BrewerChefProcessorMason". :)

Post on the "-" thread in adventure mode forum.

Sure, AFTER I do this, I find out that I can now view as an EL. And of course, this post I think gets me out of that level, too, so meh.

DF Suggestions / Re: Compilation: The BIGGEST gameplay problems with DF
« on: September 15, 2008, 06:20:56 pm »
The stone management is a problem, though it's not a big one.  The problem is that whenever someone gets a job that requires stone, they always seem to pick the one that is FARTHEST away from them.  It would be nice if I could specifically zone mining to have the stones be automatically forbidden.  Or to not leave stones, but that might be asking too much.

What I'd like to see is when a dwarf picks a stone for a task, and paths to it, as they're walking the path, they'd check within line if site (either their current square, or 1 square in each direction), and if there is an untasked stone, use that instead.

This could also solve the problem of the dwarves going out of their way to go get the stone 1 or 2 z-levels from them, if the path they'd take would take them past a stockpile or other untasked stone. (one slight performance optimization, at the cost of memory, would be to store the expected path length, and then only site-check stones once you've gone further than that length (since if there were a stone within that length, the dwarf probably should have chosen that one anyway).

I think it could add a bit of realism, as well. I don't think we'll ever get away from telepathic dwarves (who know that stone is available the instant the dwarf 20 z-levels below them mines it), but I think it'd be nice if dwarves headed for the nearest stone stockpile when they need stone, and grabbed one if they happened to see it along the way. Could mean that dwarf then carries stone a lot farther than need be (slowing him/her down a bit), but the exercise would do them good.

DF Eternal Suggestion Voting

...

To avoid vote account spamming, you need to have posted enough to exit Escaped Lunatic status (8 posts).  I'm not sure if I'll stick with that or not, but it's the way things currently work.  I know some people will probably be more interested in voting than chatting on the forums, but safeguards are also likely needed to avoid corrupting the process.

Is there a way for us lunatics to at least view anything on that page? At least to see what it is all about without spamming posts to the forum for the 8-count? heh
Aww, just go ask some questions on the forums.

Yah, but then I'd have to go search to be sure my question hasn't already been asked, and then that doesn't tell me if it's something already up on this site. :)

wee, 5!

I didn't think to look in that file. I was grabbing DF to put onto a computer today, saw that the latest was 12/21, and wanted to check to see if I'd grabbed that one for my home machine (hadn't).

Hopefully I'll remember to check that file next time I'm in this kind of situation, heh.

Easy enough if you happen to be using visual studio. Unfortunately, I know little idea of how other compilers would do it.

Ah well, I'll survive. Carry on, heh.

DF Suggestions / Version resource?
« on: February 04, 2008, 06:02:00 pm »
Are there any plans on adding a version resource to the exe file? I find that trying to determine the version I have installed by looking at the exe's date attributes is not always so reliable.

Thanks for the game  :)
