DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Best trap component to your taste?
« on: June 23, 2008, 11:49:05 pm »
For some reason I like weapon traps filled with whips and scourges.  There's nothing so demeaning as dying to 10 whips to the face.  I love when goblin lashers attack :)

DF Gameplay Questions / When does the King come?
« on: June 23, 2008, 11:40:46 pm »
I have a fortress where the "Incoming King" notice appeared in the summer.  I was already well past the architecture requirements, began working on the road requirements, and I offered about 10x the offering requirements to the dwarven caravan that came in the fall.  I completed the roads over the winter, but here's the problem...

It's now late spring a full 2 years from when I got the "Incoming King" notice.  I haven't had any immigrants for over 2 years, the dwarven caravan didn't come last fall, and I'm beginning to wonder what's going on.  I fought off a goblin siege last fall, but there was no mention of any dwarven traders or migrants.  The siege was easily fought off, as was the bronze collosus over the winter (using only dwarf power and two stone traps).  My fortress is humming, with legendary armorsmiths, masons, and crafters galore.  I'm ready to retire the fortress and move on to another location, but dammit, I want the king to arrive before I do.  I've never had a king make his home in one of my fortresses, and I want this to be the first.

Sell mechanisms.  They sell for like 180-210 a piece.  I've never not been able to afford an anvil when the first traders come.

I love cobaltite and cinnabar.  They are both striking colors that make an attractive fortress.

For one of my first fortresses, the top 4 layers were about 100% rock salt.  That was pretty slick.

In the US, the alternative to brandy was whiskey.

It has living space attached to each 2x2 set of workshops, enough for 4 tradesdwarfs and 2 dedicated haulers.  There are two stockpiles easily accessible by the tradesdwarfs and also easily accessible to the main hall, so you can set up input/output stockpiles with related good, if so desired.  There is also a common area with the living quarters that allows you to place some amenities and items (such as statues) to produce happy thoughts.  Finally, each workshop can be sectioned off with a door, if need be.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Friendly Military Dwarves
« on: April 10, 2008, 11:29:00 am »
That's very strange, as I've never had a tantrum spiral.  In fact, in my most recent fort, a goblin siege killed 42 of my 124 dwarfs.  The aftermath was only that a couple of the little guys requested meetings with the mayor.  Maybe I keep them too busy to make friends?

I have a rock crown worth 2400 on one fortress:
code:

Itnet Lorbam, "The Uncertainty of Standards", a Rock salt crown

This is a Rock salt crown.  All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.  It is encrusted with Rock salt.

I have another fortress with a Larch bow, decorated with Larch, which is also worth 2400.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Attacking the Elves

quote:

Another, non-dwarf-companion way of killing elves is to strategically place ballistae and have some trained operators at the ready. A nice copper ballista bolt to the face will learn them elves gooood. (It'll also crush their skull into a fine powder, but the point is still made.)

I've had terrible luck with siege weapons.  My current fort has catapults guarding the entrance, with a long channel designed to funnel enemies into the path of the catapults.  Even with this and a High Master Siege Operator, I have yet to hit *anything*, not even a friendly dwarf, with my catapult shots.  Add to the fact that my operators run in terror when the gobbos get close, even though they are safely behind a 2-wide channel and solid fortifications, and it's clear that siege weapons are pretty much worthless.

From what I can tell, the death of the unit leader plays a huge role in when a goblin squad routs.  Most of my ambushes and sieges are driven off when the unit leaders are caged, since they're usually the first ones into the traps.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Fey Mood Help (may contain spoiler?)

Most likely the dwarf wants plant fiber cloth, rather than silk cloth.  I've had many a mood ruined by lack of one or the other type of cloth.

Each of my last two forts has had a marksman who received a red lung wound.  In each case, the marksman continued his patrols merrily, with nothing but the occasional bout of unconsciousness to bring him down.  In fact, they seem to be the longest lived of all of my military, probably because they're frequently late in arriving to battle.

"Wheezer" cancels job Drink.  Unconscious.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Moody dwarf woes
« on: March 08, 2008, 11:49:00 am »
Well, I have 12 skulls on hand (of various kinds), and 62 bones (again, of various kinds, including the kind he's already collected), so I don't think he wants more of those.  I have both pig tail and rope reed cloth in decent quantities.  I'll try creating some cave spider silk cloth to see if that helps.  If not, I guess I'll probably consign him to a locked cell, as I don't think I'll have access to giant cave spider silk until the dwarf caravan in about 5 months.

DF Gameplay Questions / Moody dwarf woes
« on: March 08, 2008, 07:32:00 am »
I have an armorsmith who has been possessed by a secretive mood.  He's claimed his workshop and begun collecting materials.  However, inexplicably, he has stopped gathering stuff and is now just sitting in the workshop.  Can someone help figure out what I need to do to get him to continue?

When I inspect the workshop, I see the dwarf drawing these pictures, in order:

Shining bars of metal (x2)
Rough gems
Forest
Stacked leather
Skeleton
Stacked cloth
Cut gems
Square blocks

In the workshop he has collected:

Aluminum bars (x2)
Rough lapis lauzulis
Palm logs
Mountain goat leather
Horse bones [6]

My stockpile records indicate I have 40 cloth, 31 cut gems, and 226 blocks, all of which are available and not being used.  I can't figure out why he won't go get some cloth and continue gathering items.  I also have 31 charcoal available, so I don't think lack of fuel has anything to do with it.  Any ideas?
