For one of my first fortresses, the top 4 layers were about 100% rock salt. That was pretty slick.

It has living space attached to each 2x2 set of workshops, enough for 4 tradesdwarfs and 2 dedicated haulers. There are two stockpiles easily accessible by the tradesdwarfs and also easily accessible to the main hall, so you can set up input/output stockpiles with related good, if so desired. There is also a common area with the living quarters that allows you to place some amenities and items (such as statues) to produce happy thoughts. Finally, each workshop can be sectioned off with a door, if need be.

Itnet Lorbam, "The Uncertainty of Standards", a Rock salt crown

I have another fortress with a Larch bow, decorated with Larch, which is also worth 2400.
quote:
Another, non-dwarf-companion way of killing elves is to strategically place ballistae and have some trained operators at the ready. A nice copper ballista bolt to the face will learn them elves gooood. (It'll also crush their skull into a fine powder, but the point is still made.)
I've had terrible luck with siege weapons. My current fort has catapults guarding the entrance, with a long channel designed to funnel enemies into the path of the catapults. Even with this and a High Master Siege Operator, I have yet to hit *anything*, not even a friendly dwarf, with my catapult shots. Add to the fact that my operators run in terror when the gobbos get close, even though they are safely behind a 2-wide channel and solid fortifications, and it's clear that siege weapons are pretty much worthless.
"Wheezer" cancels job Drink. Unconscious.

When I inspect the workshop, I see the dwarf drawing these pictures, in order:
Shining bars of metal (x2)
Rough gems
Forest
Stacked leather
Skeleton
Stacked cloth
Cut gems
Square blocks
In the workshop he has collected:
Aluminum bars (x2)
Rough lapis lauzulis
Palm logs
Mountain goat leather
Horse bones [6]
My stockpile records indicate I have 40 cloth, 31 cut gems, and 226 blocks, all of which are available and not being used. I can't figure out why he won't go get some cloth and continue gathering items. I also have 31 charcoal available, so I don't think lack of fuel has anything to do with it. Any ideas?
