It seems rather impossible to run DC under wine. I can't get the stupid GTK+ to work (one installer crashes with a memory read violation, the other works, but Python doesn't find the dlls and so on).

The python installation and the installation of the needed modules have worked well.

I even got DC to start, but it crashed immediately because of missing dlls. And if I add those dlls manually (another hour wasted, because Wine knows no $PATH variable [really, if you want to do more then start programm xyz with wine, it all becomes a great WTF?!]), they are still not recognized, or it asks for other dlls instead. :/

Any helpful ideas?

I can confirm the Media Player / WoW issue. At least for 4 people in my old guild this worked fine. I got no speed improvements, but they went from "nearly unplayable on some fights" to "pretty stable throughout".

Yes, they are listed in the c screen. And in the embark screen goblins are listed with the red dotted line.

DF Gameplay Questions / No sieges or ambushes for 5 years
« on: August 24, 2008, 08:53:28 am »
Okay, in my current IRC succession game we are at the sixth year mark. We have a count, strong economy and about 650k fortress value.

The goblins were one region map tile away from us on embark. All civs are listed in the civilization screen, we even get kobold thieves occasionally. No snatcher, ambush or siege yet.

Our init options are turned on (we checked that), and we are using 40c. The world was generated in 39-something, and has been upgraded with every new DF version.

Any idea what we are doing wrong? :/

Edit: 140 dwarves, only 2 deaths over the years.

No linux is not supported. Running a win32 python through wine might work.

Thanks. Will try that next time.

DF Bug Reports / [40c] More 'forbid x on death' strangeness
« on: August 22, 2008, 05:57:22 am »
My settings are:

Forbid used ammunition
Claim your dead
Forbid your death items
Forbid other non-hunted dead
Forbid other death items

Bugs / Problems:

a) Chunks from combat are not forbidden. They won't chase after lopped off legs now, but a chunk of the same leg is still as alluring as it ever was

b) Vermin killed by cats is marked as forbidden and produces a LOT of miasma, because no one bothers to clear it away. Maybe include killed vermin in the "hunted" category?

Is there a version for linux users? I have python installed (of course) and I am running DF via wine.

Any help on running it would be greatly appreciated. I just says that Dwarf Fortress is not running. Of course I am using the 40c, so maybe that is the problem?

DF Announcements / Re: Dwarf Fortress 0.28.181.40c Released

Awesome! Thank you for the great work. :)

My current fort (at work) is a nano fort in a otherwise completely unmodded game of 40a.

I have the new options turned on in the general orders and so far they are working fairly well. I usually play with "Dwarves gather refuse from outside", to get bones and skulls of decayed corpses.

Since I am constantly under attack by zombie deer, zombie foxes or zombie wolves, there are a lot of bodies and bones around. Usually I wait for a clear moment, gather all the bones and prepare for the next wave.

I tried the new feature and it worked. The deer died and its corpse (and later the bones and skull) was forbidden. Next a wolf was cloven asunder, paws and its tail flying into different directions. All lopped off body parts remained unforbidden after the wolf died, although the corpse had been correctly marked as forbidden.

I have no idea how this affects clothing or sieges, because I don't get goblins yet, and have no other forts here to test it.

DF Bug Reports / Re: [39f] Lock-up

Yeah these "oh, you pressed a key for a long time... surely you want to use our totally annoying and useless feature"-things in Windows have killed a few programs and games for me also.

Not DF yet, mind you, but enough other things. Even if you disable it in the options it pops up from time to time. It is very annoying, because I like to think with keys pressed while playing DF or programming stuff.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Seeds
« on: August 19, 2008, 07:06:18 am »
a) You can order the seeds from the caravan, other traders also bring seeds with them (Humans and Elves only overground crops)

b) Request more from your liason or don't cook the products unless you have really enough seeds

c) Every food production is viable, just do what is most fun and challenging for you ;)
As above, you can get the seeds from the traders usually

d) Plump Helmet spawns are created if you eat the plump helmet raw or if you brew it into alcohol, since 1 brewing task uses one stack of plump helmets, it can lead to a lot of new seeds, in the case of skilled planters. 1 seed -> 5er stack -> 5 seeds for example. If you have too much seeds, you can cook them (and forbid a small amount for safety)

e) I'm not sure.

DF General Discussion / Re: Nano Fortress

I want to thank you for this great tool. I am currently playing a nano fortress in a haunted forest. Getting besieged by zombie deer from all sides and improving my z-level design skills, all in one.

Great idea and a great tool! :D
