Life Advice / Job offer dilemma
« on: November 23, 2020, 04:21:42 am »
So I got a job offer from my old employer, a small aerospace repair shop.  They needed more help and as I technically still work for them, they offered the position to me.

Backstory: I was employed at the small aerospace company for more than a year.  It was only part-time, with (very) low hours.  Three months ago, I got a job at a large manufacturing company.  I never quit the aerospace job, just worked fewer hours.

Code: [Select]
Job large manufacturer small aerospace
Hours 40 at least 20
$ per hour 18.70 22
other benefits none Super-flexible hours.  Tiny company.

The large manufacturing job provides a steady 40 hours per week.  The small aerospace job is less certain.  The job offer lets me do more types of work than before, and guarantees a minimum of 20 hours per week, but how much it will really be is anyone's guess.  If they get flooded with orders, it could be over 40 hours per week.

My annual expenses are around $22K.  In the worst-case scenario at the aerospace job (20 hours/week), I will almost break-even.

The biggest upside of the aerospace job is I might be able to get some experience working as an engineer.  Since I don't have a bachelor's degree, this is a big deal.

I'm torn between keeping the safe job, or taking the exciting but risky job.  :-\

Does that mean the games over or do we need to sail back to the mainland?
   The game is over.

edit:   Thank you all for playing!

3
follow the path

You walk to the park with a spring in your step.
You meet your date there.  The gifts were very well appreciated!
The adventures on the boat make a great story.

You both have a great day.

4
Exit the boat and enter land
You leave the boat and walk across the docks to land.
There is a path leading to the park here.

Check self in mirror, clean up appropriately

That would be embarrassing.
There is a bathroom at the marina.  You go there and wash the engine grease off your hands.
You spiff yourself up to look good for the date, too.

Check self in mirror, clean up appropriately

That would be embarrassing.
+1 then this
search for a place to get the beverage, flowers and chocolates
We already have those items they're in the boat, also dump all the items we don't into whatever place they go.

Get needed items
You open the under-seat storage lockers and grab the beverage, flowers and chocolate.
You put various tools and unneeded stuff into the toolbox and berth.

You lock up the hatch and close the storage lockers.

check the checklist/instructions, wouldn’t want to skip anything
You re-read the note in your pocket:
The note is a checklist.  It is dated today and says:
         beverage
         flowers
         chocolate
at the bottom, there is written the name of the island park you are to meet your lover on, and a meeting time: 1000h.

You should put the above three items in your inventory and get rid of anything useless (like tools)

You think of the next step:
Your ultimate destination, the park. (within walking distance from the marina)

+1 Also tie the boat to the dock so it doesn't float away.
After a few minutes, the boat is secured to the dock with ropes.

guest dock
You are standing on the wooden dock in the island marina.  Your boat is tied up here.
It is now 0929h.

try to park in the marina
You are now floating alongside the guest dock.  You turn off the engine.

Close the engine, then start it up
After screwing on the engine cover, you try to start the engine.  It takes a few tries, but it is now running.

take out the corroded battery
With the help of more tools from the toolbox, you remove the corroded battery.

Try to take the corrosion layer off of the old battery
You suspect that the corrosion might have caused increased electrical resistance.  You wash off the old battery using some of the deck cleaning equipment.  It looks a lot better now.

Find new battery for engine
Since there's two batteries we probably have to choose one, so I guess use the dust buster battery?
Put new battery in engine
The dust-buster battery doesn't quite fit, but that's OK since you only need it once.
There is some wire and electrical supplies in the toolbox.  You use this to connect the dust-buster battery.
The dust-buster battery is now wired up to the engine, ready to try starting it up.

are any of the batteries we found comparable with the engine?
   Yes, they both can work.

Remove engine cover
Inspect battery

You take the screwdriver from the toolbox in the berth.
The engine cover comes off easily.
The battery has a thin coating of salt-water corrosion on its terminals, and an expired date-code sticker.

search for a spare battery on the ship

A search reveals several batteries onboard:  the house battery, and a fully-charged dust-buster.

Look for a screwdriver or a replacement.
If we can't find one, think of another way to get to the battery.

We might have to ask for help on the radio. Maybe someone can come alongside and help us out.

You find a screwdriver in a toolbox in the berth.

It is totally possible to call for help on the radio.  Sailors are a friendly sort, and there are plenty of boats milling around.  You know the marine frequencies that they all listen to.

consume fuel
The engine's fuel tank is already full.

Turn on phone.  Send flirty text to date.
   You send the text.

Keep trying to turn on the engine.
The whining and clicking grows quieter.  Seems like a dead battery.

Lower the sails and turn on the engine. Then:
Go to the guest dock and secure the boat(we are in that step, right?)
   You lower the jib.
Trying to turn on the engine produces a soft whining and clicking noise.
Go to the guest dock
You realize you can't sail into a modern marina.  Modern marinas are cramped and require motors to maneuver.
In the old days, marinas were much more spacious and arranged so you could sail in and out of them.  After all, motors didn't exist back then.

deck
You are just outside the island marina.
It is now 0902h.

Continue course for the island
After more than an hour of smooth sailing, you arrive outside the breakwater of the island marina.
There are a few other boats, sailboats and powerboats, sailing around.
   You reef the jib.

>open storage locker
   Opened.

>take engine fuel
   Taken.

>use fuel on engine
You fill up the engines fuel tank.

>put engine fuel in storage locker
   Done.

>close storage locker
   Closed.

Tank up w/gas.
You have no fuel in your inventory.

Try the knife or a plastic card as a screwdriver.
Even after several attempts, the screws refuse to yeild to a knife or a plastic card.
