Thanks everyone.  I've some experience with DF and it's single threadedness and been involved in some epic threads about threading. ;)  So I'm sure I'm looking at the right processor metrics.

What is unusual and spawned the question is the sudden nature of it.  Corresponding to the mega beast event I didn't know if there was a known bug and I didn't see it listed.  I do not have door permissions for pets and I always make 3 wide halls so that's not a concern.  Digging into it I think it might have to do with my medical dwarf trying to help someone he can't reach (seeing as he was immobile, now dead), but it's all moot now since the lycanthrope got the best of me and that fortress is now a spot on my history.

I appreciate the responses!

Hmm, I'll have to give that a shot because I tried discarding all the miscellaneous junk to a merchant and it still didn't take.

So I took a short four year break from DF and started getting back into things this weekend. I got a fort rolling with up to 62 dwarves (and 32 pets/livestock), got a nice little tavern/inn set up and it was all humming along nicely. I got visited by a "mega beast" of the wereiguana variety. I dispatched my military to kill it and had a few instances of lycanthrope take hold on a few of my dwarves after this event. People would turn in my hospital and apparently bite some of the people that came to defend. Needless to say, I'm currently sitting at 49 dwarves (13 dead) and was working on making all the dead dwarves their own marble coffins and statues in the image of each. All of the sudden, the sim speed just tanked. I get about a step a second. My CPU is not even touched, so I don't think DF is number crunching something ridiculous (pathfinding, etc.) but my time advancement is just abysmal right now.
Is there a well known bug that could cause this that I'm not aware of?

Yeah you're right. Even people who know how may pay for the convenience.
Even if it's not convenience, the price of electricity to run a server 24/7 can be pretty close to or over $10/month in some areas on the wrong hardware.

Now, I realize that a Minecraft server is not going to tax a system this much, but my gaming PC can easily run at 300W when I'm in a graphic intense game.  At my last billed rate of $0.100715 (Distribution @ $0.023000 + Generation & Transmission @ $0.077715) per kWh, that would be $21.75 per 30 days of running non-stop.  I live in a cheap area for electricity though.  The US average is $0.12/kWh.  ($25.92 mo)

Of course, If I were to run a Minecraft server 24/7 it wouldn't be on that PC while a 3D game was up taxing my graphics card... but people sometimes overlook the price of electricity.  Server + router + air conditioning (in the summer)... If you can get a 20-40W machine running Minecraft it could be as low as $1.75-$3.50 a month (in the $0.10/kWh rate) but you also have to own/maintain the hardware.

Looking forward to see what new mods come out. Hoppers are much nicer than the BC ones IMHO.
I love the vanilla hoppers, but I kind of wish they had pipes now.  I wanted to create a "smelting room" where I could place my furnaces behind a wall and I realized that I needed to place a hopper next to another hopper to transfer items more than one block horizontally.

Updated my backgrounds yesterday.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It's a cool picture, but the mountain feels totally wrong.

Isn't XNA "the big thing" for C#? They're both Microsoft technologies, so both should work just fine, no?
A blog post from developer Promit Roy earlier this week apparently detailed Microsoft's plans to fully retire the XNA Game Studio tools on April 1, 2014...

"XNA Game Studio remains a supported toolset for developing games for Xbox 360, Windows and Windows Phone," said the representative. "Many developers have found financial success creating Xbox LIVE Indie Games using XNA. However, there are no plans for future versions of the XNA product."

Regardless of my above rant against C++, its speed and features grant it some use in the right scenario (performance-critical things like pathfinding, graphics etc). Here is some interesting information on language speeds.
That link shows how much JavaScript has improved... it's right up there in Java/C land for a majority of the tests.

First time see this game, is it similar to towns? What game is better, or what is the difference between towns and this?
So we don't rehash all the differences here in this thread, here are some links to get you started...

Yeah, I already wrote my peeps and let them know of my concern of the magazine restrictions.  I suggest anyone with the ability to write also do so.  Handwritten letters can go a long way with the right people.

The distance it will go *is* the power level.  A signal from a light detector in bright light will travel further than a signal from a weak light. To detect signal strength, you can use a comparator or place your devices  at a certain distance along the redstone wire.
No, the distance it will go is how far it will spread. The power level is whatever the current signal strength is in any one piece of redstone. Also the whole idea of different power levels as it applies to a signal in redstone is completely new. Before the closest you could come is whether you where powering a block strongly like with a repeater or weakly with just a normal signal. Redstone used to be either off or no and now it has different levels of on so it went from black and white to a a gradient though one is still exactly off.

I'll try to explain it again: The power level and how far the redstone will spread are the same thing.  I just loaded up the snapshot and tossed a few potatoes onto a gold pressure plate.  The more potatoes I put on the plate, the further the signal went along the redstone wire.
The only reason redstone used to be 'off' or 'on' is because all available devices only sent out full-strength signals, and all available mechanisms responded to the weakest signal.
Now that there are devices that can send out weaker signals depending on stuff they detect, signal length is no longer just a limit on how far away you can put a lever, but also a way to detect how powerful the signal was, by putting repeaters or gates at a certain distance along the wire.

Feel free to download the snapshot and see how it works for yourself. It's pretty neat.
That sounds like it could be a neat way to refit pressure plates... full power for cart + player, less so without the player.

... as mIRC isn't good at all.

I may be bias in this (since mIRC was the defacto default chat client when I was into IRC) but unless mIRC has gone extremely downhill since the 90s I can't see how it can be "not good at all."  I realize that's quite a few years, but I can't imagine there's much more to IRC in those years.

oh yea lasers are so much different, your time to aim is significantly cut down since you know thats the spot the bullet will hit so you wouldn't require more time to aim down the sight.
Sure, but I always thought trigger pull was a major aspect of aiming inconsistency and I would spend countless rounds trying to hone my skill with the trigger.  I guess that's why my laser shots were still so precise, but I found out I was practicing the wrong muscles when I should be looking into why my sight is throwing me off.
Trigger pull is important too, depending if you are running on single action or double action you would need to time your pulls for consistent shots.
I should have said "my trigger pull."  I know it's important. ;)

We mainly used the Nether for travel and glowstone.  It's nice that they are adding more functionality... for free.
