"Whatever happened to Doctor Doak? That one old guy that dressed funny?" Dixie remarks within earshot, while looking at the middle-aged hobo and his newfound friend, the older-looking bogling. "I never did get to talk to the man."
"What about him? It's too late worrying about the guy that wasn't with us since the beginning."

WE GOING?

"Yeah, let's go."

It was a wonder how the giant spider were seemingly under Linea's radar for so long, even now when someone else mentioned it, Linea addressed the subject as if it was a variable to rule out. Make no mistake though, after what happened yesterday, she was not about to overlook any details, especially if they were wildcards that could pose danger to her. It was just at this moment, she decide to not think much about it; she simply put it at the back of her mind, secured and saved later to be processed out.

"We rarely discus him nor involve him in our plan and yet he always catch up. Leave him be. As for the Little Fairy, wasn't it with you, Mr. Jack?"

Linea was wondering if she still needed the fairy or was it worth it to trade if with one of her men. Now she thought about it, would that be more beneficial to have one extra hand in form of good ol' CSA agent instead of hazy and now overlapping information? Even if Barnes managed to find something, it was likely to be nothing more than intel about Little Sally's heinous operation. They are not here to crack down illegal trafficking.

"Well? What about it?" Linea turned again to Dixie, with a map, waited for the answer about the terrain. Because, simply a simple "hm..." won't do. 'God these people will erode my sanity faster than I imagined.'

Posting on Slyph's behalf due to "reasons"
_______________________________________

The instruction felt like it was muffled, and instead resonates inside her mind like damned bell ringing except it was her own voice. Despite the arrangement, it seemed their business with these natives was not quite concluded.

Linea warned against wandering any further around the boggling's encampment to avoid misunderstanding and had informed Jack to keep his pet bear on a short leash. The chief, although demanding, was reasonable and she respected that.

"Here is the planned route, did you see any good spot for resting?" she asked Dixie, not explaining how did she knew that the girl was flying last night, nor sparing a moment to criticize her decision to disappear at the most critical moment. Linea shut down all unnecessary process to focus on one thing at the moment; getting a safe distance from their newfound ally (?) and find a good place to regather her thoughts.

"And spare one of those trinkets if you don't mind."

Despite everything, it seemed Linea had clearer pointer now she could focus on. Her instruction was strictly for him as fellow CSA operators, but sounded as if directed for everyone else.

"Let's move."

Linea seemed eager to move on ASAP, but what about breakfast? Bath and other amenities? Meh, knowing Linea, probably later, when they reached drier ground.

Masha eyed the long-ear with dripping disdain.  Perhaps she should give this one to Kalya after all.  Seeing which one broke first would either level the village, or set one of them right.

YOU ANSWER QUESTION I ASK, OR ANSWER QUESTION CHIEF ASK. SAME QUESTION.  EITHER WAY, YOU ANSWER. YOU ANSWER, OR YOU DIE. MASHA SEEN ENOUGH DEATH FOR TEN LIFETIME. BUT IF YOU WANT, YOU GET.

She then turned a cold, bitter shoulder to the long-ear, and focused on the green-skin one.

MAYBE YOU SMARTER.  NOT FIGHT NET MAKERS. NOT FIGHT ROPE TENDERS.  YOU ANSWER.

Actually Edwarg glad it had turned this way. Just like his old man say: in business, man should negotiate with woman and vise versa, what would happen otherwise? They fight.

"Please understand my friend there is wounded and exhausted, and your people didn't provide us with barest hospitality of water to ease our tongue and quench our throat."

Edwarg glanced at Linea once and double checked for objection, apparently none.

"What I can say to you, we are not here to harm anybody, just trying to find our missing kinsmen. We have no idea what treeman you are referring, but it was just us two from far away lands in the west, adventuring woman and man, an acquaintance hailing from the lands of arachidfolk and a druid with his bear companion."

Edwarg was a patient man, but when the poison knocked Linea down due to such a reckless (if not intentionally malicious) act, his primal blood boils, but managed to retain his composition somehow. It was clear to him what those jars could do and you could never breath as few as possible if you let anger get the better of you.

So, instead of shooting dead the fool who was now lying on the mud, he glanced at their adversaries. He could see their silhouette and quickly made a sense of it. It was the native they saw earlier, no doubt. What did they want?

Edwarg was still aiming his shotgun at general direction, but it seems no would make any next move soon. It seemed they are studying him and he did the same.

They brought sleep inducing poison, they wanted to capture us alive. The question is, why? Offended by Dixie's magic? Or did we trespassed their territory? Anyway, we ain't getting out of this one tonight.

He lowered his weapon and called. "All right, folks, you win."

No answer. Good thing they didn't pelt him with more arrows or gas jars.

"Let's talk! We did not mean any harm! You attacked us and we simply defended ourselves. No more bloodshed! Let me talk to your chief and then we can end this peacefully."

He tried again, removing his helmet this time, hopefully showing his beastly visage would earn some trust and a sense of understanding. Linea would not like this one bit, he knew. They could also be the one responsible for the death of their colleagues, that also possible. But they are running out of option now and the only sensible choice would be trying to talk this out. Not a very bright prospect, but decided to bet for such possibility.

The orc quickly caught the falling fairy and carefully let her rest leaning against his backpack.

"That's one way to do it." Edwarg mused, witnessing the rocky creature crumbling before him. Upon closer inspection, he noticed that the creature has no squishy part nor no weak point.

"We'll be in deep trouble if we run again into one of these guys."
He concluded, shooting a glance at Linea who seemed far from being amused with the whole situation.

Edward lunged forward to reach the effective distance for his shotgun. They were rock trolls, all right, and although several slashes were deep enough to give it a few cracks, the effort dulling your blade was not worth it. The troll was still in shape an ready to maul the new guy, so Edwarg, with a shaky aim pulled the trigger and shot the monster at whatever body part in his line of sight.

Both Linea and Edwarg had been woken up before the sun rose and proceed to do their own things. Linea bathed on a nearby creek soon after rationing their supplies and preparing a kettle of water to boil, not saying a single word to him, but instead giving a heavy emphasis that it was Edwarg's job to do.
She then returned, less than a half hour later with a slightly improved mood.

"The water's any good?"
he quipped when Linea sat beside him and pour herself a hot water on a tankard.

"At least it was crystal clear. Won't complain." she drawled.

The orc gestured a small package of coffee in case she was looking for it, but Linea refused by wincing and clicked her tongue. "Had enough of it."

"That's... unexpected."

"I forgot washing it down with water before sleeping." she ranted, paused when she carefully sipping the still-steaming water. "and it left a lingering aftertaste that wont go away. Damn it felt like I was sleeping with mouth full of coal."

Edwarg laughed. "Silly you! Sometimes I think your fondness for those dark beverages is rather worrying. Guess this is a wake up call, literally... not saying coffee is bad, but you gotta think of alternatives. Again, not saying you should, but... you don't have to worry about waking up with foul breath. Ah how embarrassing!"

"What a mouthful..."

"Tut-tut! Don't turn down an advice from a doctor." Edwarg continued in a manner that looked like a lengthy cackle, much to Linea's chagrin. "When I was younger I had an unhealthy obsession for a booze..."

"And then you decided to stop..." she retaliated quickly. "after learned that in one of your have-had-one-too-many streaks, you ended up walking shirtless in the street mumbling about the half of your life before passed out hugging a lamppost? I have heard this fascinating story several times."

"I... uh... that's a story for another time."

"Suit yourself." said Linea with her usual snarky monotone. "But I get it, too many coffee is bad. And stop with your tut-tutting, heavens you looked like a grandpa! And you are not even a doctor."

Edwarg let the old hermit walked past him and greet the newcomer while he studied them. He held his shotgun like holding a guiding staff, zero-provocation style, muzzle and flashlight directed to the ground, fingers away from the trigger, but could reach to it with a simple movement if needed to.

He decided to remain silent until the old Jack done with his banter.

I s'pose so... But why would..... I don' un'erstand....

And that was about the truth of it-- Jack did not understand how the distant approach of a most likely friendly party had triggered his danger senses so intensely. Maybe it was just him being near the tower, and being ill at ease.  That was as good an explanation as any right?  Perhaps it was because he was just so used to being watched that intently only by things intent on seeing how tasty he could be... Maybe it was something similar but benign? Seeing the party's strength from afar some how?  But why so intense, like it was right behind him?  He just couldn't grasp it, but it had been there.

We shou' prolly jus go fin out. No' gonna learn nuthin just gawkin'. he muttered out loud.  Ya down with headin down wit' me? I wants some answers ta why ... he paused for only a moment, fishing for a good way to put this, without spouting what would surely sound like complete insanity. .. Dula's walkin' up here inna middle o de night, wif a total stranger. Dula's a good guy. Big as a barn, jovial, an aloof-- Goo' in a fight tuh.  Lots a wollop. New guy from th' may'r? Mebbie.. Dunno.. Wanna fin' out?

For a moment, Edwarg wondered why wouldn't they just wait for them to come here instead of come along and wander in the forest for rendezvous, but then after taking a quick glance at the tower and stone masonry surrounding them, he thought he could take a gist on it, yeah, despite his beef with Linea, that sounded like the most logical answer why he seemed itching to get out of this place.

"Sure, but let's not wander too far from the others." Edwarg attached a flashlight on his gun's muzzle and took point, leaving his shield behind.

"Won't be sleeping soon? Keep an eye, yeah." he said to Dixie, and then continued with a chuckle. "Wake Linea up if necessary. Don't worry I'll take the blame for it. We wont be long."

Ed turned his head away from Jack, and up at the road, then shielded his eyes from the fire.

"Good eyes old timer.."

Eye. he corrected flatly. He peered into the gloom intently.  The shadowy figure was way too tall to be a person, and was lumbering up the road without a care in the world. Jack felt that was not the source of the disturbance he felt though. Tiny bits of movement in the wake of the larger figure cascaded across his vision, and the pieces snapped together. I think it's Dula... He's got som'un wit' 'im, but...

His voice trailed off, as if distracted by something.

He was confused. Why would somebody Dula was traveling with set off his danger senses like this, from that far away? It did not make any sense... Surely, if they were looking for the rest of the group, the big roaring fire would be more than enough signal on where they were-- What could have set him off like this?..

His thoughts wandered in circles.

Edwarg, being a latecomer in the party did not have enough time to know the entire crew, so when facing the incoming giant spider, all he did was observing the closest ally and learn their reaction. Jack recognize them as friendlies, but his behavior was not what he would expect from someone meeting an ally.

"The... spider? You know him, right? What about the other guy?"

It ain't the paladin girl... Who is'at wit' 'im?....Never felt 'em 'afore....

The orc stood, gripping his shotgun with the most unthreatening manner as possible, just in case. He was scouting the area a while ago and was not noticing something that could've gave away its presence from miles away, this too, gave him a certain unease.

"So, another new guy?" he asked. "But he's with a friend. Could be a reinforcement? The Mayor's men perhaps?"

Jack trudged through the quickly reddening twilight through the grass, and toward the tower.  He could see that the large orc fellow had taken to tending the over-sized fire, and had set a number of large logs aside to keep it fed with.  Instinctually, and totally undesired, thoughts rushed through his head about misusing resources. There was only so much fallen timber, and it took YEARS to grow a tree that size. It was downright wasteful to use wood in such a wanton manner... but he took that thought, wadded it up, and crammed it into the back of his mind.

"Nobody wants to hear about that kind of thing, Jack. You've put your damn foot in it badly enough as it is. Don't say a goddamn thing about it, pretend it didn't happen, pretend you don't see it, do whatever-- but don't bring that shit up.  Deep breaths. You're here to be 'sociable'-- not cause a further ruckus. You made pancakes, and brought water, because you are trying to be nice--"

His internal monologue trailed off as he drew closer, and the outlines of his traveling companions came into clearer view.  Linea and Edwarg were eating biscuits and drinking coffee again. Either those were magical biscuits, she had a really profound preference for bland hard food, or they did not really provision well before they left.  Regardless, the biscuits really did not have enough 'oomph' to sustain a body walking so many miles in a day like this, and then shivering in the cold at night to boot.  Pancakes weren't really satisfactory either, but the honey at least would go a long ways toward making up the deficit.  What she really needed was a good serving of stewed starchy root vegetables, some savory herbs to make it tasty, and some hearty meaty bits in it-- something that would keep a body going under this kind of abuse...  Just...

His thoughts wandered again, to all the times the elf-girl had tacitly refused any of the food he had gathered previously.  Sure, it wasn't exactly gourmet, but it wasn't like it was poison either. Then again, most people don't consider such things edible...  He had to remind himself of that.  The pancakes at least were something everyone could agree were actually food.

They would have to do.  --Especially since they were all he had at the moment.

At the very least, she should have some honey with that hard tack. SURELY she wouldn't refuse THAT.

As he drew closer, he noticed that the other woman was missing.  He wondered if she had gone off somewhere, but since the only real reason he could come up with for why she would have done so involved answering nature's call, and was not something polite to bring up, especially when bringing food, he decided to put the observation on the same dark corner of his mind that the oversized fire, and wastefully stacked wood were relegated to.

Approaching the fire, he held a hand up peaceably, and announced his approach.  He was unsure how good the other's vision was in the growing darkness; He had heard that Elves and Orcs had better vision than humans did, but such things were apochryphal, and until proven, not something to bet your life on, or just assume.

"Howdy!" he announced jovially. "Ya kids hungry?"

The campfire was unnecessarily bright so Edwarg had no difficulties on discerning the approaching figure. It was the hermit Jack, he waved at him and called.

"Hey pops! Care to join us for some coffee break? That's a real treat you've got there, pancakes goes well with coffee. Sit down here, I will make you some."

Edwarg had finished bringing the last batch of firewood Linea wanted. He kept this last pile close to him so Linea didn't have to work on each of them again and get disgusted by any trivial critter.

Sitting next to his large backpack, which supported by an oak trunk he just relocated to make a makeshift bench, Edwarg spent a few moment to let the campfire give him some warmth. His shotgun was beside him; he had finished scouting, but seeing Linea resting peacefully, the orc decided to wait for the morning to give her his general assessment. There was nothing worth noting anyway.

The campfire was lit so bright it quickly boiled the water he prepared. They had hardtacks and sweetened coffee, and he helped himself with a few of them. "Any luck with the gate, Lady?" he raised his mug in an offering manner and pour its content into smaller cups.

The lady in question was still tinkering with the gate, now she was drawing a knife and prepared to slash the barrier. Whatever the result was, Edwarg brought her a coffee.

"Thanks for your assistance, Mr Lucy." said Edwarg, taking back the pancake into his backpack. "If I understand Linea's plan, she wanted to take this pixie with us back to the forest. Is it safe to do it now? I'm actually more concerned about the its well being."

After some times, Linea showed up, with no less frown on her face.

"I take the meeting didn't end up well?"
