DF Modding / Re: Options to make farming more difficult?
« on: August 18, 2008, 08:56:49 pm »
I read on the wiki that 1008 grow duration is equal to one season. So I'm thinking that making plants take at least 2-3 seasons to grow would make things quite difficult.

Also I saw cluster size might be a good option, but I heard that was bugged in some way. Is that still true for the latest version?

DF Modding / Options to make farming more difficult?
« on: August 18, 2008, 05:52:26 pm »
Farming as it stands right now it way too easy. As we all know a single 5x5 plot can feed a good sized fort for awhile. So any suggestions on how to make farming harder would be appreciated.

Whoa it's my fort from a long time ago. I've seen it quoted twice so far recently. I hate that I lost it with my computer reformat or I would have finished it.

That's a shame you can't forge creatures. Oh well, seems my spiders will have to just be acquired though trade. Thanks for the replies.

Also, wouldn't whether they would be on your side or not be a factor?

I thought that if you created something that it would be on your side, unless this is false.

DF Modding / Forging Creatures

I am working on making a technology advanced race of gnomes. I am going to make a mechanical metal spider creature for them to use as pets. So I have a few creature related questions.

1. Is it possible to make it where my spiders do not breed or have babies?

2. Would it be possible to make these creatures in a forge or any type of workshop?

3. Finally is it possible to have regents for them? Such as requiring bronze for a bronze mechanical spider and steel for a steel mechanical spider?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: fortress design?

In my current fort I have dug out a road a couple of z levels down that leads into a chamber. This is my enterance, from there it splits into two hallways that lead into the circle where everything is at. I guess it is easier to show it than explain so here it is.

I had already planned to make the moat surround the walls and have docks. I didn't dig out the moat yet because I didn't want it to fill with trees and grass while I worked on everything else. I had thought about the dry docks, but the waves seemed like the would be a problem. I think that when I connect it to the ocean the waves would spill in over the flood gates and eventually flood the bottom. Which is why I am thinking of using the area for a large graveyard/church.

I have built the bulk of my fortress and am looking to expand. Currently my goals are to build a lighthouse, church, graveyard, and possibly a mini castle (though this is low priority) inside the walls of my town. I am most concerned with the northern area. So I am asking for your guys opinions on where to build these things. I am trying to make this town look as good as possible, so location is very important to me. Here is a picture of the fort in 3d to give you an idea how of the layout looks and also the map archive for it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Melting Stone

I melted everything before I started building things like doors and workshops. After that I just dug a mine shaft so I could get the stone I needed after I had dug out the main fort.

I read somewheres recently that you can edit the raw files on stone to set its boiling tempature at 0. This way all the stone on the map at the time would disolve. Would anyone know how to do this?

Regarding this, would you need to generate a new world when you made these changes for them to take effect?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Water pressure and my dam
« on: May 18, 2008, 10:14:00 pm »
I fixed the problem by making tubes that start at the first level of the lake and let it flow out the bottom. That way my lake stays topped off and I get the power I wanted. Thanks for your help guys.

I like your third idea quite a bit, might I be able to automate it with pressure plates?
