DF General Discussion / Re: Symbol Generator
« on: December 15, 2022, 06:26:33 pm »
I spent a couple of hours writing a lua function for printing the categories to the gamelog. Requires DFHack, so this is potentially missing anything new to the Steam release.
Thank you so much for your work! Unfortunately I don't play vanilla anymore with the steam release so I won't be able to use this with dfhack. But I will definitely learn form this and implement it into my program. I'm coding it using Python and I'm still a noob at coding but I'm getting there, I'd estimate 80% completion. Seriously, I can't thank you enough for getting a list of objects.

In the meantime, I practicing my coding skills by creating my own. Anyone happen to know where to find a list of all of the items in the "objects" section of the symbol creation screen. Been googling around and can't find it anywhere (creatures, plants, and trees are easily found on the wiki). There's way too many for me to want to type them one by one unless that's the only option.

at the very least to generate an image like the ones that can be found on artifacts/engravings. Like "the image is of a unicorn and a dwarf. The dwarf is impaled on the unicorn" but specifically for the group symbol on the embark screen.

Does anyone know of a symbol generator for DF? Like the symbol you can make for your group on embark. I was thinking of writing some code to make one but wanted to make sure it didn't already exist before putting in all that work.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Claiming restricted items?

Normally, "foreign-owned" items (i.e. equipment worn by visitors/invaders or items brought by traders) will lose their ownership information once the owner dies, but I guess that didn't happen during the Abandon/Reclaim.

From what I recall, the only useful thing you can do with such items is to Dump them, ideally onto an atom-smasher.

Note that these are distinct from "imported" items (also in parentheses, but grey instead of red) or "stolen" items (actively Seized from a caravan), both of which can still be used for whatever you want.

Thanks for the insight. There's really no way to clear their ownership? would cleanowned in dfhack work? I've been avoiding it because i didn't want to strip all the other items from my dwarves

No need for extra tools. Those items are 'forbidden' meaning your dwarves won't interact with them. Most enemy or merchant gear is forbidden by default and the reclaimed fortresses are riddled with forbidden gear.

For specific items, you can loo'k' at the item and press 'f'orbid to claim it. You'll see {these} disappear from the outside of the name, which means its no longer forbidden.

You can also designate large areas of items/workshops with 'd', 'b', 'c'laim.

I'll warn you that your dwarves can take an entire year or more to carry all the clothing to stockpiles, so be a bit careful with it. You have no need to produce anything for a while, except food and drink, and can trade off goods by the boatload.

DFHack can be useful for very quickly moving those items around, if you need it.

I should have been more specific with all the info i found and what I've already tried. These items are not forbidden, they are restricted. they have () around them, not {}. according to the wiki this means they were not produced in my fort. They were forbidden when i first got here but I unforbid them and claimed all of them but no change. It doesn't seem like my dwarves will even melt them. I've had metal armor, bolts, and weapons sitting in the bottom of the fortress for years.

This is what it looks like in the stocks screen: (Restriced Item)
As opposed to: {Forbidden Item}

DF Gameplay Questions / Claiming restricted items?

I reclaimed a fort and there are a lot of items that got left behind that are red in the stocks screen. The wiki says these items are restricted (usually because they are owned by traders). Is there any way to claim these items so I can use them? there's some good gear and a couple artifacts that I can't display. I use LNP so I have access to DFhack if necessary.
