DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: DF2 Speed and You (And me)
« on: July 17, 2011, 05:37:28 pm »
I went through and did my usual fix to the init settings, though I kept weather and the like on. Generated a relatively small 2x2 world with no rivers but an active volcano caldera smack dab in the middle. Its running at a steady 150fps for now, I appreciate the response folks.

Now to wrap my head around this damn army arc thing a ma jig... I JUST WANT TO ACTIVATE THE UNIT SO THEY CAN TRAIN :'(

Heading over to the wiki for further illumination. Thanks one and all!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / DF2 Speed and You (And me)

Its been quite some time since I last played DF and I was wondering if an equivalent project to this following link. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=28841.0. I apologize for posting such a simplistic question but I am rather out of the loop. After searching the forum for "speed boosts" and "enhancements" and other such terms it came up with forum games and nothing I could find that was connected to my request.

So, what news to boost my precious fps gentlemen? I'll run through the basics, turning off weather, and the like but I was curious.

Set these values in your init.txt:
[FULLSCREENX:1920]
[FULLSCREENY:1072]
[BLACK_SPACE:YES]
[FULLGRID:120:67]

Alternatively, use one of the recent 40d## versions and you can change the grid size with the mouse wheel in-game.

haha wow. There we go, the mouse wheel shtick fixed it. Kudos to you Sizik. ON TO THE DORFENING!

In the graphic resolution or the standard resolution? Or should I just copy and paste this in there willy nilly?

DF General Discussion / Wonky Screen Size

Hullo all, its been a while since I mucked about with dorfs, and In that time I had a fairly significant computer upgrade. Going from a 2.1ghz machine to a quad core 2.5ghz with most of the trimmings.

I am getting back into it, but the standard 800x600 is, well, tiny. My native resolution is 1920x1080 and I can barely read the opening text of the menu. Now I am using a graphic tile set ( http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/40d:Graphics_set_repository#Dystopian_Rhetoric ) with instructions from ( http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Tileset#Graphics_sets ) I also removed the black space, assuming it would expand to fill the screen afterward. Not so much.

I have also applied a few of the frame rate optimizers from ( http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/40d:Maximizing_framerate ) Though I would not think they would affect this sort of thing...

Basically I would love some help because I am finally in the mood to get my dorf on again, and I can't bloody well see the dorfs!

EDIT:      I am running df_28_181_40d19_2_win btw

DF General Discussion / Re: FotF: Dwarf Fortress 40d19

Well, its been well over a year since I seriously played dwarf fortress, I was just wondering who I should ask to update the speed optimizations in the df wiki

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Maximizing_framerate

It is rather outdated. Admittedly, they did not have this lovely gang of individuals banging out code to make DF go supersonic, but I like to squeeze out what little fps I can, as it all matters when you hit 200 dwarves and have a fully fledged fortress. So, again, apologies if this is the wrong spot for it.

build a bauxite hatch with a bauxite mechanism above the booze stockpile. Link it to the bridge outside the trasure room. when he pulls the innocuous switch the bridge comes down and his booze explodes, likely killing a good percentage of the fortress. Depending if its teatime or not. (many of my dwarves seem to be on a single schedule for booze. Recomend savescumming before this juuuust in case

Woodcutter2/Carpenter5/axedwarf2/wrestler1
Mason5/Stonecrafter5
Mechanic4/Building Designer1/Leadership and clerical skills all 1
Miner3/planter3/Brew4
Miner3/planter4/Butcher 3
Miner3/planter3/Cook4
Armour Smith4/Weapon Smith4/Metalcrafter1/Furnace operator1

the usual list, 60 of all booze, 6 of all 2$ meat and about 70 in turtles. also cave lobster if available. Usuaully get a lot of bauxite too if theres magma on the map. 15 of each seed, about 6 dogs, I have my metalsmith train them, then small necessities. Like an axe, 4 copper picks, etc. If your in the know this is the newbie starter. One I had planned on changing but now cant. I cant play DF so its a little outdated.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Outdoor fortresses!

I made a relatively impressive keep. It was surrounded by a moat of water 2 deep connect to the brook that was flowing near my fortress. The moat also fed my well via series of tunnels and levered hatches. The initial fort had two levels.

The courtyard level being surrounded by solid walls, no ground level fortification, containing my trade depot in one corner, and floored entirely with lunite. The walls and upper fortifications were made of andesite. (I think) THe upper fortifications were spaced 1 apart with walls in between. Iron bolts set up around the inside perimetre of the upper walkway

I thought that this would prevent spammed arrows from prickling my crossbowdwarves. It was fairly large, on an 800x600 screen it took up 1 1/2 screens up and down. There was a seperate holding that I hadnt paved over.

It was my above air farms where I also grew wood for emergencies. (ie siege) . I was building towers in the corners and around the map that were connected to my siege practice area. Also there was only one drawbridge into the fort and that had three ballista in front of it, just in case. The ballista were surrounded by walls with enough fortification to fire out of in the direction of the enemy.

The first below ground level was my stockpile area for finished goods that were to be traded. Also my woodmason's shop. Then the barracks, training quarters, siege training quarters. after that the kitchen, dormitory, long term storage, non-magma workshops, magma workshops, magma storage, and below that was room for more workshops I was keeping open, then the crypts, and below that were the mines.

It worked relatively well. The only time I suffered casualties is when my militia was silly. ie taken off training to have a nap, go and party, etc.no one pulling important switches, or being too far out before switches were pulled. the usual stuff. No one probally remembers what with the influx of new members but I made a post about a family member abandoning it. It was never really tested at that point. Also, it had 2-3 legendary weaponsmiths and armoursmiths in its time. Who never really got use because it took 3 seasons to fill the magma storage chamber and then kaput. Still, I remember it fondly especially as I can't play DF right now.

Yes. Use Wubi.

DF 40d was compatible with the windows software-renderer, indeed. The next version won't be, so.. sorry about that, but pretty much any card on the market today would be fifty times faster than the one you've got, even the el-cheapo $30 ones.

Eh, downloading wubi now... Fingers crossed I want me some kitten porridge tonight! Oh, and thanks for the recommendation Baughn, I hope it works.

14
To the last two: Try it on Linux.

Go on, download Wubi and try it. There's a good chance that would make it work, but if it doesn't, at least I can get some more useful debugging information.

And unfortunately, the radeon 9550 is too old. ATI is well known for dropping support for older cards within two or three years; the 9550 is seven. That's just one reason I'm sticking to nVidia...

(But Linux has an open-source radeon driver that often works when ATI's doesn't)

But it would work on my previous computer that lacked a graphics card... Any way I can install linux without wiping my harddrive?

Just tried to play once more, getting the below error message. Im actually having issues running a number games, they all start up and then crash as they begin to initialize. At least DF gives me an error code.
