Since recent scientific studies have shown that not just women are at risk of developing uterus cancer from HPV infection, but men can also develop penis cancer and anal cancer from it, the dutch govenment will now start offering HPV vaccination not just for girls over 10 years old, but also to boys (girls have been getting the vaccination since well over a decade now).

The dutch have always been a very forward thinking peoples. Good luck with this in "amurica", people shy away from science and certainly vaccinations over here..

General Discussion / Re: How can we avoid an excessive future?
« on: February 01, 2022, 01:26:17 pm »

I divorced my wife and sold my home and live on a (very) small sailboat (28feet/9meters). I am happier than I have ever been. I don't earn much but I spend even less, so I am rich. Most Friday nights I can have a glass of red wine and some crackers with brie cheese, sitting in the cockpit, just relaxing, pure bliss. Harbor fees are very cheap compared to rent or a mortgage.

To finally cut the cord to "the American dream" has been the most liberating thing I have ever done. I refer to the moment as "my little death", it was that significant in my life.
That people would choose to trade their lives away, working for some corporate giant (I worked for Pfizer) for 30-40 years, hoping that when they retire they are still healthy enough to reap the rewards of their benefit packages, is hard to fathom. Thank the gods I got away when still a somewhat young person.

This has kept me from chasing excess, maybe it would work for you also.

General Discussion / Re: 2022 Hot Fresh Reading Challenge Thread
« on: January 29, 2022, 12:52:50 pm »

Books I've read so far in 2022 (love my new Kindle);

-Vampire of the Mists (Christie Golden)  Surprisingly well written. Will be reading rest of series.
-Haunting of Hill House (Shirley Jackson)   Didn't care for it at all, felt very "teenager" and lame.
-Suite Francaise (Irene Nemirovsky)  Excellent!
-Ringworld (Larry Niven) Loved it
-Revelation Space (Alastair Reynolds) Loved it
-Recollections of the Emperor Napoleon (Betsy Balcombe) Excellent book

DF Community Games & Stories / Re: The slow fort
« on: January 27, 2022, 03:26:46 pm »

This proved super helpful. My laptop wouldn't seem to play below 10 fps, but I ended up going with 20 fps (instead of 100). Soundsense does seem to match up better with the game when played at lower speeds. Playing at slower speed showed me some inefficiencies in my fort; dorfs taking routes that were not the greatest, so I added some tunnels. It is also cool because I never realized how much you really miss when the game is played at "bursts" of 100fps. At 20 fps I can see what each dorfs is carrying and doing, and although the game plays much slower, it seems more engaging. I am not sure if I will go back to 100 fps at all or any time soon. Weird I never got around to trying this yet... :o

Your stories on here inspired me to start playing ascii!  Thanks for all these posts Coalboat, they are really fun to read.

I am going to try 5 fps right now.

The artifact instrument exists somewhere in the wilderness. It may or may not be possible to find it in exported Legends data, but if it isn't, it's probably possible to find it with DFHack (manually and/or by writing a script). You'd then have to send an adventurer to that wilderness tile to search for it. I don't think you can send fortress expeditions to places other than certain types of sites.

It would be amazing to try to get it back. So there is a tile with a kea on it, and if you kill the kea it will drop my instrument? The fact that it could not just be on the ground but also in the sky, probably would make it incredibly hard to find. But I guess one could bait it with other nice stuff. That would be very fun to work on if I knew the location to within maybe a couple of embark sites. Hunt for the great white kea.

Sadly, this is all I know and I have no DFHack skills, but I will look into how hard it would be to find this tile.

It might be possible to get the artifact back via expedition, but I have never even tried that option myself so I have no idea whether it might work.

I recently had an adventurer create a scroll called "The meaning of Glue". It was a pretty good essay on adhesives. I dropped it in the library of my fort and it was stored there. I loved the title so much I placed it in a display case in the library. It ended up being stolen and I was able to use Legends Viewer to find out what human town it went to. I created a mission and made sure artifacts were collected by my raiding dorfs and to my total surprise and delight, I got my scroll back. That was another one of those moments where I was "wow..this game is amazing"... :)

Sadly though, there is no location listed for the kea. I think the artifact instrument is lost forever...

I am a big fan of vampires and my latest world has the coolest story line  :D

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Only 1 vampire in the whole world. He is 400 years old, and the druid leader of the elves. To my amazement, him and one other elf are the only elves left in the world, all the others read as "reanimated elf". There is a goblin tower very close to the last elven stronghold that holds its leadership of two. I noticed this screenshot was one of the first ones after I made the world. Have his surviving children been reanimated to undead since I started the world? I think there might be little time before this vampire burrows somewhere.

I understand that the vampire would have survived, but who is this other elf? Its not a vampire, and its not reanimated. So why is the druid not turning the other elf into a vampire or killing them? Is the vampire herbalist keeping one elf alive to slowly feed from? Who knows...

The vampire's skills are pretty amazing

What is also note-worthy is that the vampire is obsessed with foot races, despite losing all but two races. There are 10 listed foot races, and in some events the vampire was already 300 years old.

My main concerns:

1) Keep that last elf alive and safe from golbin necromancers.

2) Have a dwarf of my choosing infected with vampiric blood.

3) Create a squad of 5 vampiric speardorfs to;

4) Contain or kill the druid vampire elf and rule the world.

Such fun!  :)

Edit: oh wow, seems like 99% of dwarves also read as reanimated. This might become more difficult than at first thought. Seems necromancers once again are causing much trouble...

I still haven't managed to get keas to steal any caged dwarf in any of my fortress.

That would be pretty amazing. Because the kea stole the artifact, he is now listed in my Legends as the owner of it. I guess the kea became a historical figure of sorts. I envision a kea nest somewhere
with my beautiful instrument in it, and the kea plucking away at the strings with its claws...such a waste of an instrument, but maybe the kea will master playing it.

My favorite way to deal with keas (or other flying pests) is to have Crossbow Dwarfs in the area.
Examples: patrolling, traveling to & from barracks, or training in barracks/archery targets outdoors near areas the pests frequent.

I have been enjoying trade caravans come by and have their guards kill keas for me, my dorfs run around after them to collect iron bolts and then sell their own bolts right back to them for some extra dbs  :D

Thanks for the responses. I observed the tavern for a bit, it is roofed with two stories, but with a staircase going from the bottom floor to the rooftop. The keas will fly down from above and appear to actually hop into the stairwell on the rooftop and enter the tavern that way. Pretty cool. I did see a small green "k" hop around and enter the same square as the war dog and it instantly turned to a dead kea..pretty cool. I took your advice and now they get to run around the tavern.

The interesting thing I learned is, I replaced the legendary instrument with a bunch of (6-8) normal quality instruments, and they never get stolen. The only other tavern item stolen was a pot of stew that was very high quality (masterful I think). The keas seem to have an excellent sense of item quality and only steal decent stuff. I find easiest way to deal with them is to bait them away from the fort with small gems, decent quality junk items etc. They seem to love my animal traps with hamsters in them.

DF Gameplay Questions / Let down by wardogs and overrun by pond turtles
« on: January 17, 2022, 04:08:22 pm »
One of my dorfs made a legendary musical instrument, my first. He even used glass in its manufacturing, it was so glorious. A human trader offered me 60k db for it....what a treasure. Of course I would never dream to sell such an item.

Then this happened...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I hate keas for their intelligence.

The way between the tavern drawbridge entrance and the instrument had 3 war dogs chained up, the last one literally standing in the square in front of the instrument. I received no (timely) warning and apparently war dogs don't attack birds. I have two black bears, will they attack thieves? What does a war dog do? My dorfs can kill keas quite easily (see corpse pile), but the dogs seems useless, even for warning? I guess next time I will station a dorf next to my treasured artifacts? The world I created is covered in keas for some reason.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now the tavern is becoming overrun with pond turtles. If I had filled my tavern moat by pump or through a grate, would I have avoided turtles getting all over my water wheel and inside my tavern? or are they just part of the biome once the water connects to river. They rot quite easily and are becoming a nuisance.

Thanks!

EDIT: I solved the pond turtle problem by building a small fishery/restaurant next to the tavern and now I serve local pond turtle stew. Stew is served in the turtle shell...fancy..

DF Suggestions / Re: Terrible Suggestions Thread

A sufficiently strong dwarf can carry a palanquin and its occupant alone.

My dorfs probably would choose lead as a building material and adorn the lead palanquin with bands of cobaltite.

I would love having palanquins in the game. My noble dorfs shouldn't have to walk everywhere.
