I can definitely confirm that the 'Lava' lake in arena mode cause not kill creatures as it should. Dropping magma on them does the job just fine;, but most creatures just drown in the lava after being there for a few minutes

Let's say a fire imp sets fire to the entire country side

is that enough for elves to declare war?

Fire tends to burn everything, except for trees. I believe.

All that equals super happy, extremely unlikely tantrums.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: desert water

It's kind of exploity, but if you do have murky pools but the rain doesn't last long enough for you to collect water, then next time it starts to rain, immediately save and quit, go into your init.txt and turn off weather.  When you reload your fortress, it will keep raining forever.  Once you've collected enough water, turn weather back on.

Let us imagine a perfectly square murky pool, a 5x5. If one were to channel out 20 tiles in each direction of the square, and given enough rain, would you eventually get a giant 45x45 body of water? Or a huge awkward muddy hole in the ground?

My first few fortresses always had the first migrants before the first winter. Now that I "know how to play the game" they never come until the next spring. I haven't figured out why yet. I think because I used to rush to build rooms and items with little regard to design, as now I tend to think ahead and plan efficiently.

6
Of all the worlds I have generated, Elves are the only civ that is ever at war with my dwarves. They always (for me anyway) launch their attacks in the spring. Can't recall ever checking the in game neighbor screen though.

(While still alive? If so, nice trick - how?)

Use 'v' to select unit of your choice, and then 'i' to see their inventory. Then just select the item you wish to take right off their backs, and 'd' to dump it to a dump zone. Then you just reclaim, wear, and or melt. Great to have steel without flux.

I have recently taken to stripping all visiting dwarves of their steel armor; do items brought in worn count towards the import to export ratio?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Megaprojects?
« on: May 15, 2009, 04:29:54 pm »
Just for fun I right clicked "Megaprojects" into dictionary.app and was given this from wikipedia:

Megaproject
A megaproject is an extremely large-scale investment project. Megaprojects are typically defined as costing more than US$1 billion and attracting a lot of public attention because of substantial impacts on communities, environment, and budgets.[1] Megaprojects can also be defined as "initiatives that are physical, very expensive, and public."[2] Care in the project development process may be needed to reduce any possible optimism bias and strategic misrepresentation.[1]

Megaprojects include bridges, tunnels, highways, railways, airports, seaports, power plants, dams, wastewater projects, Special Economic Zones (SEZ), oil and natural gas extraction projects, public buildings, information technology systems, aerospace projects, and weapons systems

In the init, is the invaders toggle a one time deal? Or can it be turned on and off at my leisure?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Legendary Weapon Skill in ONE month
« on: April 11, 2009, 08:41:34 pm »
I would just like to point out that wrestling is bugged, in a glorious way. Training from no skill to legendary in wrestling only takes a season, give or take a month or two.

I just got this to run on my iMac OS X 10.5.6 and I am very happy with it. It does have a problem crashing while saving sometimes, but the saves are there and ok. I LOVE that I can now adjust the speed of the game and that the mouse is supported.

Sadly, I am now in a conundrum. A) my save from the standard 40d will not load in this version (no biggie, really) and B) Mac Foreman, which I also just found and have become all too dependent on, does not work with this version.  So I must choose between the speed and mouse-kindness that is 40d11, or the usefulness of Mac Foreman.

:'( Very sad. I don't suppose there is some clever dwarf master here that may know how to get it functional?
Mac Foreman : http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=695

All in all, though, this version is the bee's knees! Thank you very much!!

hm, for me 40d saves are compatible, do you have any changes to the raws that may have slipped by? That also mucks up the "fix" for Mac Foreman, which isn't so much of a fix, as it is me just moving my save folder back into 40d to make the changes, then pop it back into 40d11. Annoying, but not as much as manually editing the labors of 85 odd dwarves.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Where is the GCS?
« on: April 10, 2009, 06:06:43 pm »

I started up a world using the "Dwarf Heaven Seed" and built my fortress next to the bottomless pit. I noticed giant-cave spider silk about 2 Z levels down. Thinking that the GCS was on that level, I breached the upper level. A GCS came out. A savescum later, and it's captured. I go down to the level where the silk is, breach the pit again, and nothing. Only guess is that the GCS fired down into the pit for some reason.
Also, the giant web was on the level the GCS was on, but like most other GCS things it was invisible until someone stepped into it to dig the shaft onto the 2nd level.

Only GCS can produce GCS silk (unless you mod in a reaction or changed the raws).

Gauphastus' method works well, although if you forbid anything potentially useful on the level you breach, chances are the miner dwarf will be able to get out before the GCS comes wandering into your tunnel. Just make sure to have the cage trap loaded BEFORE you dig out the final wall.

Just as an aside, I had 3 of the bastards on my gen of that map. It was also the calmest map I have ever been on oddly enough, no ambushes, no sieges, chasm creatures staying in the chasm, and 3 revealed GCS just sitting at the top of the map. So I had to flood the world with magma.

I have noticed something weird with 40d11 on os x. I was testing the various settings in this sort of manner; set init, embark, note fps, force quit, repeat with different setting in same embark. I have noticed that some times, but not all the time, that force quitting dwarffortress.exe, and reopening it will drop the normal fps of 300-700 to a range of 30-70. This is all within the same 6x6 with 7 dwarves. When and if this happens is only fixable by restarting the comp. I am also curious as to why partial print used to make so much of a good difference, but now it flickers wildly with any value, although I should add that setting it too standard gives me better fps then 4d9 with partial on.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarf grabs bird with bare hands

More like they don't care because nobody cares about caravans. You have to kill diplomats to piss them off.

that is true, but when the elves bring a large animal, like a cat, it is listed as a 'Cat Cage'. When they bring vermin, it is listed as lets say 'Tin Cage'. After removing the vermin the cage price says the same as well. It should be noted that in the assign to cage menu, the vermin aren't listed as in cages, which is probably why this works. Once you assign them to one of your own cages, the cage naming works as expected, what with Chipmunk Cages and Blue Jay Cages in my zoo.
