DF General Discussion / Re: A New Way to Share Locations
« on: March 12, 2009, 07:28:33 pm »
Perfect, perfect!  Any interest in picking out the skills and items you want your dwarves to have, or would you like me to do so?  Embark configuration could mean just the map, or the map and the dwarves as well.  :)

Guess we'll be the first bay12 forumers trying LSD then, hahaha.

Think rapidshare or some such would be a good place to share the files?

Oh, well, I like surprises, so you set the stage with the Dwarves and skill-sets.

I'm beginner-middling in my experience, so it's all upside for me and my enjoyment... and hopefully if my writing is good, anyone else's enjoyment.  :-D

Hmm, before we go with rapidshare, I have a few domains and allegedly unlimited bandwidth on them.  While I don't want to push any boundaries, I'm sure it might suit our purposes?  I just have to set up FTP accounts or some other interface.

I'm actually in the middle of finishing my packing as I'm moving this coming Saturday, but due to the wonders of pre-planning, the internet is shifting on the same day.

Anyway, The next few days I'll be scarce.  I'll catch back up with this all on Sunday.

Peace,

Abaxial

I have a donation set up to go monthly.  I love his vision, and can't wait to see what's next!  Well, I guess we can all get to see what's next, but I like his vision, as previously stated.

I'll make a location for someone, we should get a name for this ^^ I like the idea, scenario-gameplay :)

How about LD? Location Distribution?

How about LSD?  Location Selection Distribution?

Well, I'm certainly interested.  I'd say I'm of early-middling experience, and I enjoy writing!

I also love surprises!  That being said, you choose my embark configuration and I'll see what I can make of it!

As for the size, let me at a 5 x 5 or 6 x 6 map.  (Or any other combination really.  2 x 10, 3 x 9, those might be interesting too.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Trading Question

Oh, seriously?

That would explain quite a bit.  I didn't notice the (t) so I assumed the (o) was to complete the trade.  As in "To make an offer".

Okay, thanks.

That's just it, the weight indicator in this case is wayyy in the blue.  About 3000 weight into the blue, not in the red.  Yet he says "I wish I could take this... but my animals..." or something along those lines.  As though it IS heavy, though it's not.

It's puzzling.  Okay, I just looked at the screen:

I'm taking an anvil off their hands, and am trying to sell some stacks of roasts worth a thousand each stack, some worth two thousand.  The balance ends up being:

Trader Profit: 1143
Value: 9013

Allowed Weight in the black: 4080

His word at the offer: "I wish I could take so much, but my animals..."

I figured there would be someone who ran into the same thing.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Trading Question
« on: January 24, 2009, 05:08:04 pm »
Okay.  I'm trading with a dwarf caravan, and I have a couple of questions on issues I'm dealing with that I'm certain others must have had, but can't find when I search.

When trading with the caravan, the allowable weight is up to about 3000 left unfilled.

This is after I have selected things from their side to trade.

I then select my stack of Lavish Prepared Food worth 3000.  The trader is showing about 1800 profit.  He complains that there's no room on his animals?

I just haven't had this problem before, and I'm a little confused.

That, and I can't seem to trade a few barrels of prepared food.  The 'offer' button greys out if I select a barrel of prepared food.

Still getting the hang of DF, but having a blast.

Peace,

Abax

DF Community Games & Stories / The Angry Tests of Cats
« on: January 12, 2009, 05:33:11 pm »
We stand together, we seven, ready to strike out on our own.  I've been assigned as log-keeper for this journey, and while I had initially thought it meant I was to keep an eye out for our wagon of tower-caps, it was suggested by Paxial that perhaps my father had meant a log of a written kind.

I suppose it couldn't hurt, and while the nobility sleeps, we slip away into the night and under the open sky to escape the tyranny that has befallen our clan-home.

My father always said that life was an angry test, and that the angriest test of all were the angry tests of cats.  Such creatures that drew us to love them, despite their fragility.

It was one such angry test that brought our clan-home to it's knees.  A cat, a cat, our clan-home for a cat.

So, we strike out now on our own into the wilds to seek the distant mountains and a home of our own within.  We bring no cats of our own, for we have learned much from our leaders before us.

I am Abaxial Mellorian.  And this is our story.  The Angry Tests of Cats.

(Just getting started... we'll see if we can find a suitable clan-home location from which to grow.)

Well, it is interesting to look at it that way, but it really isn't compressed into 12 ten digit numbers.

That is to say, I can do nothing with those 12 ten digit numbers unless I have the entire code base on my system.  The code itself is what creates the world from the seed.  It is not as though the numbers "2" and then "4" in sequence means a mountain exists in quadrant Ax5 and Ex13.

I get what you're saying though, and I agree, it's wonderful that we have the ability to supply a seed that creates such a world of depth. (No pun intended), while we dig even deeper into the world once we begin.  (Okay, pun intended.

I like teh big words.

It occurred to me that in a way, Toady one has struck on a method of compressing about 20 megabytes of data into 12 ten digit numbers (a 4 Kb text file)- and what's more, utterly losslessly. That is a compression ratio of 5654 to ONE.

Damn it.  It's always today!  Tomorrow never comes.

But Today is the present, and lets hope that it means we will be presented with a present such as this release!

Well, I feel good that the only thing I've done so far is to implement a square tileset.  One of the prebuilt ones.  Very nice!

Thanks everyone for your comments, I think I'll stick with vanilla for a while as suggested and then look into some of the 'value added' mods.

As I eagerly await the next version release of DF.

So, my question is this.  As I'm a new player, and I'm reading a whole whack of information about Mods and various things that exist to modify what is currently within the game.  From making things more efficient, adding content, to cheating.

What are your thoughts on Mods?  I've seen a couple of lists of 'must have' mods, but are they must have?  Obviously those who posted them feel they are so.  What is the 'pulse' of the forum when it comes to accepted and very appreciated mods?

Any generalizations I can employ in implementing Mods?  Or should I steer clear?

In the meantime, I'm going to go back to my untarnished and unmodified game for now...

Peace,

Abax.

You're just in time for one seriously cool update.  Feel free to check in the development logs on the DF main page to see the recent work done, and be sure to take a peek at the Future of the Fortress threads, versions 3 and 4.</STRONG>

Oh, believe me, I've been keeping tabs on the development notes as soon as I found them.  I love that they're updated so frequently.  (And close to completing this release...)

Right now I'm just intent on taking this attempt of my DF till it naturally finds it's end either by a slow death, or perhaps by goblin death.

I've started and re-started and re-started in an attempt to learn the finer points of the game, and I'm not certain the learning process is fully complete.  I have yet to actually irrigate and farm, which I intend to do presently.

So, thanks all for your welcome, and I'll see you all on the other side.

Unless I'm too busy seeing my Dwarf Fortress come alive on my screen.

Peace,

Abax.

I'm a very recent newcomer to this game, and have been shocked at my lack of webcrawling prowess to have missed this wonderful game for so long.  Obviously I have only been scratching the surface of what is possible in a roguelike and my searches and diving into the roguelike community only last week brought me face to face with Bay 12 games.

Incidentally, if I wasn't otherwise too preoccupied with hallowing out a life for my first seven dwarves I might find the time to complain about my recent lack of social life.  I might also take time to talk about how a loving girlfriend is slowing starting to lose patience with each utterance of "I just have to dig out one more room" or "create one more stockpile".

Alas, I have no time to expand upon these thoughts as I don't want to keep my game paused too long lest it cut into productivity.

Seriously though, just wanted to introduce myself to these here fine forums and say that I'm a new victim, sucked into the mountain by what is a continually more and more beautiful game.

Peace,

Abaxial

How about "The Happening"?

Oh, wait, I think that one's taken.
