Mod Releases / Re: Dwarf Fortress: The Long Night 3.16
« on: December 23, 2021, 08:13:14 am »
Alright, thanks.  I don't know why the default embark brought maces, but that's just how it goes I guess.

Really enjoy the mod by the way, it's stellar work.

"Play now!" doesn't seem to bring usable axes.  I'm playing as joyclaves at the moment, but this has been the case for every fort I've started on the current version.  Woodcutters just don't do anything.  They don't even pick up the... let me check what got brought this time.

...Well, play now brought some "Advanced nanotechne solid DSE-equipped mace", so i guess those aren't axes and I can't just bludgeon trees down.  But again even in embarks where i've brought things at least with the word 'axe' in the item name, no one will cut trees.

Am I missing something?  I don't recall this being a problem in previous installs of this mod, so I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong here.  Other than being given maces, I mean.

Edit:  I did manage to buy an axe from a trader, so I can cut trees now.  Just didn't start with any.  Also i guess gun-axe doesn't count as an axe?

It's been more than a year, how goes it?

Every time I bother logging in to DF's forums instead of just lurking, I'm amazed that this thread still exists, let alone gets occasional posts.

Dig down a couple floors.

If I have soil on at least -2 level, then dig farms there.
Otherwise dig a stockpile, zoned for everything but stone, except a corner that is just stone.
Put workshops under stockpile, with stairs down.
Dig farms if I didn't already, water the stone with a lazy floodgate/channel rig.
Plant everything
Make a bunch of stonecrafts because they're cheap and I have stone already
Build Depot in the meantime.

There, fort set up.  It's kind of dull and I want to get out of the routine, but what do you want?  It works.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: War with the outpost liaison
« on: October 25, 2016, 02:59:03 pm »
Caravans were showing up, but after few years the outpost liaison stopped coming...

Generally this means he died somewhere.  But there should be a new one eventually.

You can't be at war with your civ, and from what you said later in this thread, you aren't.  When you select your own civ and it shows "WAR" with goblins, that means that the selected civ (you) is at war with goblins.  If you select goblins, they're at war with you, too.

I would recommend just continuing on without the liason, though that will limit your nobility, since he's the one that sets up baron/count/duke promotions.   But you can still attract the king/queen someday, even without him!

Also if you already have the king/queen, then you don't get liasons anymore.

PTW.

This is probably a stupid question but I'm outdated on my forum lingo.  What does PTW mean?  I've seen it all over the place.

Posting to watch. Took me ages to find out too, means other stuff elsewhere but natively here it means that.

Ah, thanks.  I don't know where that shows up, but at least that makes sense of the acronym.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: FPS death
« on: October 25, 2016, 02:03:45 pm »
Once again I am back to playing the best game ever always being made and after my third fortress I had to ask myself an important question. What would I consider FPS death. I can usually get between 90-100 until the last cavern and then it really starts to dip eventually bottoming out at 15-20 by the time I get to the blue gold.

My question to all here really is what would you consider the minimum fps tolerable in fortress mode?

Somewhere around 10.  I played through all of Oblivion and most of Morrowind at about 10 FPS.

That said, it's not exactly fun being that low.

It's a longstanding issue with DF.

They released an alpha version for 43.05

Here. It needs more publicity anyway. (Apply at own risk, as the disclaimer on the actual site says)

Oh man, I hadn't even seen that.  I was poking around their github and didn't notice at all.

Thanks guys.  I'll get on this when I get back home, for certain.

If you have DFZhack installed

But DFHack is still on old versions only.  I wanted to know if this is possible for 43.05.

DFHack seems stalled on 43.03.

Is there any utility or anything I could use to make it so that I can, for instance, embark on pure mountain tiles, or in the middle of a human town?

I recall people saying LNP and DFHack have utilities for this, and I remember back in the 40d days there was "EmbarkAnywhere", but I can't seem to find any of that for the current version.

Anyone know a definite answer?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Night Creatures in Fortress mode
« on: October 19, 2016, 08:45:45 am »
Can't say I've ever had a night creature, on the order of "Twilight man" or something like that, attack a fortress.

Though you're right, they should probably.  If only to snatch away a "twilight man bride" or something, which they do in world gen.

Only night creatures I've seen attack are werecreatures, and in a more quiet way, vampires.

It seems like you can largely ignore keeping dwarves happy now.  They basically never tantrum and/or go nuts anymore.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Filling in gem veins in living quarters?
« on: October 18, 2016, 12:22:54 pm »
You'd need to cast obsidian

I didn't even think of that.  I guess that would work, if you don't mind it costing many times the time and effort that digging out a gem or two would gain money.

I think just going with smoothing and not engraving is best, unless you consider just leaving the gem walls in.  Gem walls add value anyway.

Is there any mechanical advantage to dwarves reading/copying books?

I mean I know they can write more, and possibly make 'advances', but those don't actually do anything, right?
