What waited ahead in one's life? This question weighed many minds, but little Kazuko preferred not to know. To her, the present was the most important moment to live. Ironically, she could have flashes where she felt transported to another time and place. Maybe it was due to her Oni father she never knew? Regardless, they were sometimes joyous moments, like a mother singing to her newborn baby. Other times, she saw villages raided by bandits. The visions did not they concern people she knew often, and they did not foretell actual events often either, so Kazuko simply dismissed them as an inconvenience she wanted nothing to do with.
There was one vision in particular that shook Kazuko deep in her bones: a landslide in her hometown. The smell of blood, the stifled bemoaning of the injured people... She was unsettled, but turned a blind eye like always. Tragedy struck the following day, and the teenager found herself powerless to aid her neighbors. Could she have prevented the disaster if she had trusted her vision? Thankfully, the Mizuno Pharmacy deployed a team of healers onto the site quickly. As they were leaving, Kazuko said her goodbyes to her human mother and followed them back to mount Kaikuma, where she begged to be taken in apprenticeship for entire days.
At school, the girl stuck out like a sore thumb at school with her blood-red horns. Moreover, she would probably have been bullied if she hadn't been so tall and imposing. It wasn’t Kazuko’s style to let herself bogged down, so she lived her student life at her fullest, making a precious few friends and looking into ways to harness her clairvoyance potential. Eventually, she graduated and set off to relieve smaller towns as a wandering healer. She had seen so much suffering that her mind was a bit numb to it, but she could not take it as an excuse not to relieve the people’s pain. Kazuko wanted to make life better, so that all could enjoy it like she was enjoying herself.
As she came back to mount Kaikuma to restock on herbs, she was given a mission: to head to the imperial capital with the newest top-of-the-class graduate. While Kazuko did not see why she had been selected, she happily accepted the request.
